At MWC 2024, Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 launches in October this year at its upcoming Snapdragon Summit event — the same month as last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 launch.
Qualcomm Chief Marketing Officer Don McGuire shared on X that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will feature custom ‘Oryon’ CPU cores. It is reportedly built on TSMC’s second-generation 3-nanometer process node (possibly N3E).
Furthermore, recent reports suggest that this chip will likely hit 4.0GHz max frequency packing two high-performance cores and six high-efficiency cores. This is significantly more powerful than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with 3.3GHz max clock speed (Cortex-X4 core).
For years, the chipmaker has been using Kryo CPU cores and this year’s Snapdragon flagship chip will see a new CPU design.
Last year, the Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon X Elite 16, an Arm-based chipset for PCs, boasting the said Oryon CPU. Which is said to be more powerful than Apple’s latest M-series chips. Now, it’s finally coming to mobile chipsets.
Additionally, Qualcomm is expected to introduce another 8 Gen Series chip, codenamed as SM8635. It will reportedly use one Cortex-X4 core at 2.9GHz clockspeed and Adreno 735 GPU.
This is likely positioned between Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Gen 3 and will likely be called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Lite or Snapdragon 8s Gen 2.
