At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2024) this year, Sony revealed new customization options for the PlayStation 5 slim console. The company will soon be releasing optional colored side plates in blue, silver, and red that can be purchased separately to change the look of the PS5 slim.
The new side plates ditch the two-tone glossy/matte finish of the original white model in favor of a uniform matte texture across all surfaces. This should help reduce fingerprints and smudges compared to the glossy tops. The red option especially stands out as a brighter, more vibrant shade than the original PS5’s “cosmic red” accessories.
Sony says the silver plates are meant to evoke nostalgia for the design of the original PlayStation console from the 90s. Black side plates will also be made available in the future. The PS5 slim continues Sony’s strategy of offering both a standard model with an optical disc drive and a cheaper all-digital version. The detachable drive can also now be purchased separately, simplifying manufacturing and allowing the digital console to still play physical games later on.
With over 50 million PS5 units sold worldwide since launch, the new customization options give players even more ways to personalize their console as Sony maintains momentum.
The colored side plates will provide a fresh new look and are set for release later this year at a price of $54.99 which is roughly ~PHP 3k. But you can purchase the Volcanic Red and Cobalt Blue plates for the original PS5 consoles from PlayStation Direct 56 at this moment, along with the matching DualSense controllers. Additionally, you have the option to pre-order the Sterling Silver plate, set to be released on January 26.
