Sony IMX586: 48MP Image Sensor for Smartphones

Sony has announced the upcoming release of its new image sensor for smartphones, sporting 48 effective megapixels and ultra-compact pixel size of 0.8um – the Sony IMX586.

Sony says that the IMX586 stacked CMOS image sensor has the world’s first 0.8 um ultra-compact pixel size which allowed them to pack 48 effective megapixels onto a 1/2-type unit.

The new sensor uses the Quad Bayer color filter array, where adjacent 2×2 pixels come in the same color, making high-sensitivity shooting possible. During low light shooting, the signals from the four adjacent pixels are added, raising the sensitivity to a level equivalent to that of 1.6 ?m pixels (12 megapixels), resulting in bright, low noise images.

In addition, the Sony IMX586 is capable of shooting 4K resolution at 90fps, 1080p in 240fps, and 720p in 480fps (w/ crop).

The IMX586 is expected to ship in September 2018 with a sample price of JPY 3,000.
