Sony has announced that their premium range Xperia smartphones will be supplied with the latest Android updates for two years after launch.
As for budget and mid-range Xperia phones however, Sony isn’t making any promises. They can opt to not upgrade devices that fall under those categories if testing does not meet their standards, meaning the hardware is not capable of running that particular version of Android at an acceptable level.
This mobile upgrade policy was first reported by Xperia Blog, whose article also includes information on Sony’s Security Update Program, as well as Spectre and Meltdown patches.
The Sony Mobile Security Update Program is an initiative that regularly rolls out patches that protect against the latest security threats, including Android-related issues as well as Xperia-specific ones.
As for addressing Spectre and Meltdown, Sony is in the process of making patches for pretty much every X-series phone, as well as the Xperia L1 and L2.
