Supreme Court looking to use AI for drafting decisions

As per an article on Inquirer , the Philippine Supreme Court (SC) is looking to leverage AI for streamlining their operations. Court Administrator Raul Villanueva also revealed that SC was already using AI for research and case monitoring.

Last week, he also added that the high tribunal was already developing voice-to-text transcription. This is being funded by the judiciary’s proposed PHP 63.57-billion proposed budget for 2025.

In light of this, Senator Grace Poe reminded SC to not depend on technology entirely for operations. She noted that it removes the human side of decision making for the SC.

While Villanueva acknowledged her reservations, he explained that they intend to use AI mainly for monitoring progressing cases. Further, he said priority was given to aging cases.

He also added that the transcription service in development is a huge step forward for their current best practices. Villanueva explained that converting different Filipino languages into English could be of great use.

In addition, Associate Justice Mario Lopez guaranteed the Senate that SC wouldn’t depend entirely on AI-powered services. He said that the SC would continue to involve humanity in the disposition of cases.
