Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly, Twitter) confirmed an upcoming change on the platform’s block feature.
Musk’s confirmation came as a reply to a post, saying that the block function will limit a blocked account from interacting but won’t block them from seeing public posts.
Currently, when a user is blocked, they will just see “@[insert username] blocked you” when visiting a profile that had blocked them.
A source told The Verge a possible reason why X is implementing such change, because apparently, blocked users will still be able to see posts from those who blocked them by simply switching to incognito tab or using a different account.
While that may be the case, X also prevents blocked users from viewing someone’s profile when logged out.
Previously, X Engineering also mentioned to make changes on how the block feature works. One of its tweets read, “If a user who has blocked you replies to one of your posts, you will now be able to see their reply.”
“This change enables you to identify and report any potential bad content that you previously could not view, safeguarding both your account and the overall integrity of our platform.”
Perhaps, another potential reason is that Musk himself wanted to disable the block feature. Since the takeover, he has been vocal about his dislike of the block feature, saying it “makes no sense” and that blocking would become “deleted as a ‘feature’.”
It is unclear when will the change come through but expect the platform to implement it with no prior announcement.
