Xiaomi just did something huge—it overtook Apple to become the world’s second-largest smartphone brand in August 2024! Yup, you heard that right. It’s the first time Xiaomi’s grabbed this spot since 2021, with Samsung still holding on to #1.
According to Counterpoint Research’s 12 latest numbers, Xiaomi managed to edge out Apple in monthly sales volume. Both brands saw their usual sales dip (kinda expected for this time of year), but Apple’s drop gave Xiaomi just the opening it needed to slide into second place.
So, how did Xiaomi pull this off? Well, it all comes down to smart moves. Instead of flooding the market with a ton of phones, they focused on creating one standout model per price range. This strategy helped them really fine-tune their products and make sure they had something solid for every budget.
And it’s not just their budget phones like the Redmi 13 and Note 13 that are doing well. Xiaomi’s been making big waves in the premium market, too, with their foldable and “Ultra” devices. These higher-end phones are picking up traction, especially in places like India, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
Oh, and let’s not forget—part of Xiaomi’s rise is thanks to Apple’s usual August slowdown. With the iPhone 16 launch, Apple’s likely to bounce back strong. So, this battle for the #2 spot isn’t over yet!
What do you guys think? Can Xiaomi hold onto this position, or will Apple snag it back once the new iPhones drop? Let’s hear it in the comments!
