YouTube is rolling out a new requirement for content creators, needing them to disclose AI-generated content usage for their videos.
The disclosure will appear in the video upload UI and will be used to power an ‘altered content’ warning on videos.
Google gave netizens a preview of the ‘misleading AI content’ policy last year. This comes with ongoing concern about the altered depictions of real people or events.
This may be in part due to election-season concerns about how AI could be used to mislead ill-informed people. Just last week, Google disabled election questions for its Gemini chatbot.
However, the rules of these requirements are still up for interpretation.
Google says it’s ‘requiring creators to disclose to viewers when realistic content—content a viewer could easily mistake for a real person, place, or event—is made with altered or synthetic media, including generative AI’.
The interesting thing here is that these requirements aren’t inclusive of manipulated content that’s ‘clearly unrealistic, animated, has special effects, or has used generative AI for production assistance’.
The company mentioned that the labels will start rolling out across all YouTube surfaces in the weeks ahead.
Google also noted that they’re beginning with the YouTube app before desktops and TVs.
Additionally, the company also says they’re working on a removal request process for people who are the subject of AI-manipulated videos.
But until then, we’ll keep a lookout and surely let readers know for any further updates regarding the story.
