Remember the good old days when we used to spend the hot summer season playing video games instead of going out? Yeah, that’s it! Let’s go back to those cartridge-tapping, CD-cleaning era as we take a look at the top 10 console games we played in the 90s.
Note: List is in chronological order.
Super Mario Bros. (1985) – NES/Family Computer
Sold 40.24 million copies. Some of us didn’t get enough sunshine because of this game. I mean who wouldn’t enjoy two plumbers who who are fond of mushrooms, stars, flowers, coins, and a princess in a dungeon. The most amusing part about playing Super Mario Bros. is that we were so ahead of our time that we sometimes, out of desperation, attempt to control the characters by moving the controller itself. If you know what I mean.
The Legend of Zelda (1986) – Family Computer
Sold 1.69 million copies. This one’s a legend. I didn’t have the chance to play this version (I started with the Ocarina of Time) but for those who did, it is obviously well received and has set the standards for other RPG games.
Tetris (1989) – Game Boy
Sold 35 million copies. There’s always something satsifying about putting falling pieces together perfectly just so you can delete them afterwards. Pointless but epic.
Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (1991) – SNES
Sold 6.3 million copies. 8 playable characters with different nationalities, fighting styles and combo systems. Not to mention the car and barrel breaking bonus stages.
Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) – Sega Genesis
Sold 15 million copies. Probably the fastest game I’ve played in a Sega console. I never got to finish this game though. So screw you Dr. Robotnik!
Tekken (1994) – Sony PlayStation
Although it first appeared in the arcade platform, Tekken also became an all time console favorite due to its awesome fighting gameplay, huge character lineup and 3D graphics. To date, there are now 8 Tekken installments and has grown to a total of 60 characters in its roster.
Virtua Fighter 2 (1995) – Sega Saturn
Sold 2.2 million copies. Most probably Sega’s answer to Namco’s Tekken. It didn’t garner much success compared to Tekken but it’s one of the best 3D fighting games of its time. Plus, the anime was awesome. It was on GMA 7 right?
Super Mario 64 (1996) – Nintendo 64
Sold 11.62 million copies. The same concept – Mario has to beat Bowser and save Princess Peach. But this time it’s in a 3D environment and Mario has learned a lot of fancy tricks. The best Super Mario so far.
Gran Turismo (1997) – Sony PlayStation
Sold 10.85 million copies. Gran Turismo first. Driving school later.
Final Fantasy VII (1997) – Sony PlayStation
Sold 10 million copies. Beautifully rendered characters, awesome storyline and musical soundtrack. Plus, it has Tifa, Aerith and Yuffie in it. What more can I say?
Bonus: Pokemon Red / Blue / Green (1996, 1999) – Game Boy
Sold 23.64 million copies. Gotta catch ’em all, right?
Special mention: The Brick Game
60-in-1, 100-in-1, 999-in-1??? You can play 20 variants of Tetris in one sitting. Hours of fun!
That rounds it up! My fingers are tired. Hope you guys enjoyed it though. We’ll be working on classic PC games and arcade games next so feel free to pitch in your suggestions in the comments below. :)

Where’s Mortal Kombat?
Reader says:
Yeah, where’s Mortal Kombat? Anyone remember the epic Fatality moves? And Tank (SNES)? Make a longer list! Haha!
lawrence says:
yeah, +1 for Mortal Kombat! :-)
Jeric says:
How about Contra?
Iavn says:
That was released in the 80s
Lezuric says:
source? I think you missed a plenty good games. x)
Abe Olandres says:
They’re included in our 11th to 20th spot. ;)
echo says:
yup marami pa maganda. FF10, Contra, Pacman, Super Mario 3 ( D best sa lahat ng Mario series) and so on
Google says:
Ocarina of Time. damn.. u missed it
Louie says:
+1. It was mentioned. I started my Zelda days with Ocarina of Time but I have to give credit to the original. Mario 64 took the spot for the N64.
Berto Putik says:
“attempt to control the characters by moving the controller itself. ”
so true! haha
pero ‘pag bihasa ka nang manlalaro, hindi na.
…
Tama yung, Contra at Super Mario 3 din..
hindi nakakasawang laruin kahit paulit-ulit nang
natapos.
Berto Putik says:
“up-up down-down left-right left-right selec B-A B-A Start!”
sino nakakaalala nito?
:D
Mica says:
Oh memories. Haha I still play them though. Thanks to emulators!
boy_trivia says:
kasama rin po ba sa list eung tamagotchi ?
Nikko says:
O.C. Mode lang sir yugatech. Pakipalitan ang title, misleading po. Games of the “90’s” pero my Mario na 1985 at Zelda na 1986? Constructive criticism lang naman.
Tony says:
yup, yung din una kong napansin. dapat di 90’s. 1900’s? haha
Louie says:
Hi Nikko, thanks for noticing. We want to keep the title short so we sacrificed that part. Instead we added “top 10 console games WE PLAYED IN THE 90s.” on the first paragraph. Just speaking in behalf of my generation. :)
Loki says:
Underrated yung Flicky from Sega..
Masaya pa naman yun laruin..
JP Esteban says:
Your fingers are tired? After barely writing two sentences per game, and a paragraph’s worth of content to sandwich the crap? Wow, buddy. Don’t quit your day job.
Abe, I implore you, screen your writers better.
Louie says:
Congratulations for having better fingers then. Keep imploring buddy.
Commenter says:
Fingers are tired figuratively, get it?
d4ryl3 says:
Because it’s HIS list, Sherlock.
JP Esteban says:
@Louie: It’s nothing to congratulate. You probably exercise your fingers more by using your phone than typing an article that could fit in a few Tweets. I’m not criticizing your opinions, I’m commenting on the lack of any substance to back them up.
When I get a notification on my phone to read an article on Yugatech, I actually look forward to it because – occasional grammar mistakes aside – it’s likely to be fairly informative *and* locally relevant. Understandably, this is an opinion piece so the same expectations shouldn’t apply, but I have to say that for this reader, its brevity was disappointing.
inb4 if you don’t like it don’t read it; I have to read it first to find out if I like it, right?
@Commenter: Fingers are tired figuratively, but the article is short in reality. Get it?
@d4ryl3: He posted it in public, Watson. You put anything out in public, it gets exposed to criticism. In this case, be thankful it’s not the same derisive crap that you Yugatards throw at another writer, poor @bobfreking.
d4ryl3 says:
It’s his post and choice of content. So if you want a longer list, go make your own. Because as per common sense, your criticism that HIS article is short is irrelevant.
JP Esteban says:
Your jimmies rustled, boy, or do you just not know how opinions work? His opinion is that the 10 games in his list are the best. Mine is that his list isn’t satisfactorily supported (Note: I’m not asking for a longer list). There’s plenty of relevance there, because if he doesn’t back it up, how am I to know why he thinks they’re great?
By the way, you posted a comment down below:
““You missed x..”
Well, the title says “YUGATECH’S” Top 10 Console Games of the 90s.”
So if everybody who had something else to say just shut up, you’d only have banal, fluff comments like “Great article!” or “I completely agree!” It makes for good discussion to have differing points of view, especially since Louie specifically asked for comments and suggestions. For Louie, it gives him material. For the readers, it improves user experience. For Abe, it brings in traffic. Obviously for people like you, it just causes rageface. You obviously need to ease up on the aggression before you make yourself look even more clueless.
d4ryl3 says:
Regarding your post, point taken and understood.
Regarding my post, my point is that he can’t “miss” something in his top 10. It’s his list. If this game isn’t there, it’s because he thinks it shouldn’t be there. I’m not discouraging people to post their own selections. All I’m saying that the wording is wrong, that he “missed” something. That is all. I hope I’m making some sense here.
JP Esteban says:
Fair enough. It does make sense when accompanied by that clarification, but I understood it as a generalization.
Ripples says:
“Abe, I implore you, screen your writers better.”
..this is tantamount to personal attack, and your asking to ease up on aggression? You may have comfort with words but obviously you lack propriety and respect.
JP Esteban says:
I’m not attacking anyone. If Louie (or Abe) takes offense from my asking in earnest that the blog’s writers – or at the very least, the articles they submit – be examined better, that’s an unfortunate side effect of the statement’s actual intent: to help improve the quality of writing in this blog by making a critical remark.
I am not calling Louie out for any number of completely unrelated offenses, like bad grammar/spelling, choice of topic, originality of ideas, relevance to the Filipino community, or other such non-issues that are occasionally brought up in these comments; some in much more offensive language than the one I chose to employ.
As for demonstrating a lack of propriety and respect on my part, I agree on the former in retrospect it may have been more appropriate to point this out to Louie privately. He does provide his personal SNS details after all. However on the latter, I cannot support your claim. First off, I have no reason to be gentle in my criticism of his work. We are not friends, not even acquaintances, and I suspect Louie would prefer to keep it that way. Secondly, one of two outcomes would have emerged after my posting: ether my comment would have gone completely unnoticed, or ignored, either immediately or shortly after his reading it; or it would have left a lasting impression, negative though it may be, that would hopefully serve to push him to exert more effort. I don’t doubt his intelligence, writing ability, opinionated outlook, or gaming credibility, not at all. I only wish he would have showcased those traits in this article.
I hope this clears up my motives, which are not in the last bit unselfish; after all, as a frequent reader of this blog, I want to come across quality content.
shinichi says:
“Your fingers are tired? After barely writing two sentences per game, and a paragraph’s worth of content to sandwich the crap? Wow, buddy. Don’t quit your day job.
Abe, I implore you, screen your writers better.”
Well obviously, your comment is offensive and you are saying “I’m commenting on the lack of any substance to back them up.”? You should have started off with the lacking parts and not being boastful..tsk
*pasikat*
JP Esteban says:
See above comment.
Additionally, observe how I’m not talking about my own writing abilities at all. I’ve never said “I can do better.” There’s nothing I’m boasting about, and I don’t know where you’re getting that from. At worst, I’m being unduly harsh.
As for your second accusation, again, where are you getting this from? What makes you think my commenting on some random guy’s blog post would serve to make me famous? If I really am just feeling pasikat, wouldn’t it be much better if I created my own blog, went on other blogs and commented in advertisement of mine? The motive doesn’t exactly fit the crime.
shinichi says:
Ok then if you think you aren’t *pasikat* or something, think again.
I also think you know what “Constructive Criticism” means right?
It is better if you had commented out your point of views in a respectful way.

About the list, all of the games listed here reminds me of my childhood. :)
This would be my last comment here. :)
r3JAM says:
How about Battle City?
Louie says:
Battle City is included in the preliminary list as well as other great games. :) we chose the most popular for each console.
arcade_guy says:
“Street Fighter II: The World Warrior” must be replaced with “Super Street Fighter II”. SSFII is a better version of SFII with more characters that we know today in SFIV and SSFIV:AE.
And wait, this list seriously missed the Street Fighter Alpha series which introduced mechanics we use on today’s fighting games.
Gambit says:
TWINBEE should atleast make it to the top 20…agree?
troll says:
1942 ako kesa twinbee.. mas classic ang 1942 kesa twinbee
HiERARCH says:
panalo ang bonus Pokemon game sa list! hehehehe

“SNAKE? SNAKKEEEEEE!!!!!”
d4ryl3 says:
“You missed x..”
Well, the title says “YUGATECH’S” Top 10 Console Games of the 90s.
Paolo says:

EPW says:
Can you please explain how console games are categorized under “PC Gaming”?
momtv.com says:
It’ll help if you have some experience with Linux, but it’ll definaterly help if you’ve got some patience.
However, it just straight game purchases without counting digital upgrades are tallied,
then Battlefield 4 earned the number one spot on the Playstation 4.
5″ is the result of lead developer Shinji Mikami createing a game that was near completion and then completely scrapping it.
