When I first heard of the Asus partnership with for the NX90 last month, I thought it was just a design collaboration. Seeing the Asus NX90 up close and personal isn’t enough; one has to listen to it to realize how much it rocks.
The NX90 comes in a polished aluminum body and coated to make it fingerprint-resistant. The unit is pretty large (or wide for that matter), having an 18.4″ display screen.
The sides of the display screen is coupled with a pair of big speakers that extend beyond the body of the unit. I like to refer to them as a large pair of elongated ears. For perspective, I placed my Apple iPad on top of the unit and it only covered barely a third of it.
The specs are very impressive as well — sporting a quad core processor, an NVidia GeForce GT 335M and a pair of 640GB HDD giving it a total of 1.28 terabytes of storage.
Asus NX90 specs
18.4″ display @ Full HD 1080p (1920×1080 pixels)
Intel Core i7 740QM (6M cache, 1.73 GHz, 4 cores, 8 threads)
Turbo Boost to 2.93 GHz
nVidia GeForce GT 335M 1GB DDR3
6GB DDR3 RAM
2 x 6400GB HDD (1.28TB)
Bluray/DVD+RW combo
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
6-cell battery
The full-sized keyboard also features two trackpads — one on both sides (not the bottom of the keyboard where it is usually placed). Asus explains they were also thinking about the lefties when they did the layout. I think they were more concerned about design symmetry.
What really separates the NX90 with other luxury-line of laptops is the Bang & Ulofsen speakers. I’m not pretty good with speakers or audio equipments but the pair of speakers on this one rocks. The sound is crisp and clear and the clarity of the sound even at high volume is impressive (no detectable distortions whatsoever).
Feels like you have a separate set of subwoofer+speakers with it. Great for watching movies or music playback.
Asus made the NX90 as a luxury appliance meant to be a center-piece of the living room. Partnering with a trusted brand like Bang & Ulofsen was a move to get the message across. That effort doesn’t come cheap — each of these costs Php129,995USD 2,215INR 187,791EUR 2,110CNY 16,132 (and you have to pre-order them so don’t expect to see units on display in stores).

Wow, even having an N series Asus laptop is a dream for me but this one is really the next level of entertainment for laptops :)

Whew, good thing I’m not (yet) in the market for a gaming laptop.

I would still prefer an Alienware though at that price point.

super elegant.. I wish they will release a smaller and cheaper version of this.. but same design pattern… it looks more like a tv with a keyboard attached!

@Vict0r88
Yes, you prefer leaky-battery Alienware products over quality Asus concepts anytime.

Kuya Yuga, do you have a Macbook review? My parents are planning to buy me one this December. Is it student-friendly?
Mr.A says:
It’s a desktop replacement, i see. I would rather buy their speakers and plug it in my desktop, it would be much cheaper with the benefit of almost all the specs mentioned.
Just my preference. The design looks nice however.

I’m purchasing this as soon as it hits the US market and there are several reasons for it. First, I think that the aluminum outer case is a very attractive point for me because it won’t distort or lose its shape the way that plastic does over time. I’ve tried carbon fiber notebooks before, but they still have some flex, which is particularly worrying on the LCD. I’ve seen that this one has some flex, but not too much. Second is the wonderful edge to edge glass-covered LCD panel that it comes with; a panel that is LED back-lit despite being an 18.4 inch panel. Dual hard drives and the ability to easily upgrade components are also huge pluses for me. 1 GB of video memory is yet another point for me, and before anyone complains, sure I know that Alienware laptops often have better video cards (M11X has the same NVidia 335M), but all that I plan on playing on it is StarCraft 2, which should be easy for it. Finally, it has all of the connectivity options that I need including blue tooth and USB 3. I know that the drawbacks are battery life and a lack of portability, but the aesthetics combined with the enviable performance along with the ability to upgrade and the quality workmanship are the primary factors that draw me in.

just try to bring one of these in your school…this laptop kills any laptop in your school!
JEVjnd2000 says:
Yes, the price is much different. Actually, I will take it to my school since I’m an educator, but of course, it’s just for me to use there. I’m just tired of using what they have there now, so you’re right, it will kill anything in my school.

costs the same as a sony vaio f series with less specs. but this is a fingerprint magnet, no doubt about it. just imagine the amount of time you’d have to spend bent over cleaning the fingerprints you’ve left on it. not to mention the ugly overhanging speakers.better is the g73jw.
JEVjnd2000 says:
I might agree on the G73jw being a better option if this was all about gaming to everyone, but to me, quality goes a long way too. My job demands that I always travel which means that I can’t afford to buy anymore plastic notebooks like the VAIO F. It’s not that I don’t like Sony either, as I desperately wanted to love the VAIO Z but really couldn’t because of it’s somewhat flimsy carbon fiber construction. If their flagship’s build quality wasn’t good enough, why would a VAIO F be any better? It’s not that I beat these laptops either, I just need it to hold up with some traveling. The verdict is out on whether or not this one will hold up, but I certainly hope so. I’m going to use this as a desktop replacement as soon as I get it in, which still means that I have to travel since I often have to live overseas for years at a time. For me, this is worth it for that reason. I can also view movies with a very good LCD without investing in a new tv every year. Of course, I know that that won’t cut it at home, which is why I have an NX800 Bravia at home complete with an uber-powerful custom level 10 PC connected. For traveling light I have a Dell Adamo XPS since the aluminum chassis holds up very well during my many travels. The plastic G73 is not for me as it simply feels too cheap for me while the LCD is also not up to this caliber. I hope that this sheds some light as to others’ perspective. One last thing; those speakers are not ugly to me. To me they’re functional design.
ra-3 says:
just 2 make it clear, i’m not commenting on or reacting to anyone’s comments on here not even to the article that was written but only to the product. care ko how other people live their lives? na-ondoy ako, and i no longer want to have gadgets that i can’t carry around esp. in a country where not even a condo unit is safe from thieves.
my cents’ worth, your cents’ worth – on a product that’s gonna be obsolete in a few years’/months’ time – ultimately, not much worth.
that said, peace.
JEVjnd2000 says:
Yes, and I have never lived in the Philippines either, which is where I am supposing you allude to as a dangerous place, in which case you’re right. I live in the US, Korea, and China depending on what I have to do. In any case, that’s great that you like the G73, I hope that you enjoy yours. I’ll enjoy my NX90. Also, for me it’s not a gadget as much as it is a work tool and something that I can use to occasionally entertain myself.

bang and olufsen has only one concept store in our country (at makati shang). it’s a very expensive speaker system brand, even more expensive than bose. some mercedes-benz models are equipped with this. this brand is in line with mark levinson which is a harman brand.
Abe Olandres says:
@jmg_32188 – there’s also Bang & Olufsen at the Greenbelt 5

I do not accept this particular post. Nevertheless, I did looked in Yahoo and I have found out that you are correct and I was thinking in the wrong way. Carry on writing good quality material like this.

Hi. Bang & Olufsen’s official Philippine distributor is Living Innovations Corporation. Their showroom is located at the 2nd Floor of the Makati Shangri-la Retail Arcade along Ayala Avenue. The store’s entrance is just beside Bacchus. The B&O store in Greenbelt closed when changes in management (from SSI to Living Innovations) were implemented.
