BlackBerry Playbook price drops by at least $100

This is looking like the HP TouchPad all over again. RIM’s BlackBerry Playbook is seeing some price cuts across the entire line-up by at least $100 over at Amazon.

The lowest price cut we saw from one of Amazon’s resellers is $335 (Php14,750) for the 16GB model. That’s a $164 discount from the suggested retail price of $499.

A discounted price of $335 is already very tempting for a very powerful tablet. And once Android Market is made available, I’m sure it’s going to get a lot more attention.

But will the BB Playbook go the way of the HP TouchPad? Not very likely. But, who knows? Read our full review of the Playbook here.

You can check out the whole line-up here at Amazon.

i’ll wait for the time when manufacturers of tablets can make one that has these besides the common features/spec items:

-At least 2gb of memory (complied by a few, i think. correct me if im wrong)
-At least one USB port (many refuse to put one)
-A VGA port (don’t know how many have this)
-A HDMI port (some have this)
    -3.5G capabilities (some have this)
-At least 10 solid hrs of batt life (hindi yong 10 hrs kung light use. some i think pasado dito)
-flash support (why apple would not make their ipads have this is quite frustrating)
-Storage expansion slot (apple naman.. pls…)
-Very responsive screen (ipad wins here)
-Keyboard dock (transformer has it with extra batt life as bonus)
-A very capable OS (i think Android and iOS do well here, haven’t tried webOS and that blackberry OS)
-Light, not more than 600 grams (may fails here)
-With very useful no-nonsense applications preinstalled (please, i wouldn’t buy a tablet just for the sake of games or SNS. i dont have any SNS account and i’d rather read ebooks than play games. that’s why i love my sony ereader)
-With stylus for note taking apps (please, i wouldn’t think of using my fingers for that purpose) of course, there should be a slot for the stylus (katulad sa sony ereaders)

The good news is, manufacturers are capable of making such tablets. The bad news, they would choose not to do it. Parang installment ba ang ginagawa nila. sa next model ilalagay or ibat’ibang models sabay irelease na may features na meron sa isa na wala naman sa isa. Yet, they expect their devices to sell like hotcakes. sobrang confident sa kanilang marketing.

mukhang nangangarap ako ng gising but like in the netbook world, i believe they will eventually succumb.

by the way (mukhang unrelated ito pero di ko alam paano ko ipapaabot kay sir yuga), meego created a software that would allow meego devices to support all android apps. and they say ALL android apps. i think meego devices just seemed more attractive.

Once RIM finally adds support for Android applications, the PlayBook will get attractive to consumers looking for tablets aside from the Galaxy Tab and iPad.

Looks like RIM will be releasing a newer version of the Playbook, that’s why the price went down.

    • Obed | GeekTested.co says:

Actually, price when down because of a low sales through. They shipped around 700,000 Playbooks but less than 50% got sold to the consumer-end.

Way back March, I emailed RIM that they should priced the playbook around 300-350. Though I know it’s a powerful device but people would rather buy iPad if they have $499 to spend.

The only market for this PBs for now are the once who love BlackBerry brands more than Apple (like me), or who owns a BlackBerry Smartphone

Regarding the second version of Playbook, production of this second gen has been stop, to give way for the BlackBerry Superphone “Colt” a QNX OS device, it will be shown at the DevCon this October.

For the Playbook, they will be releasing a “beta” version of Playbook Tablet OS v2.0 that will be open for developer who will attend the DevCon, this OS 2.0 will support native email and PIM, enhanced browser, enhance bridge and some other stuff, oh and the Android App Player!
