HP Elitebook 2540p: Ultraportable Core i5, i7

Current 11-inch and 12-inch ultraportables are mostly powered by CULVs (1.3GHz and 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo) but it won’t be much longer ’til we see them carrying a Core i5 or Core i7. First one out the door is the HP Elitebook 2540p.

This 12.1″ ultraportable is only 3.38lbs which is well within the weight range of most 12-inchers now.

What’s exciting is the CPU that it’s gonna run on — a choice of any of the following:

Intel Core i7-620M 2.66 GHz
Intel Core i5-540M 2.53 GHz
Intel Core i5-520M 2.40 GHz
Intel Core i7-640LM 2.13 GHz

With standard DDR3 RAMs of 2GB and 4GB (max of 8GB) and graphics powered by the new Intel GMA HD.

HP promises 7 hours and 30 minutes on the standard 6-cell Li-Ion battery. Don’t think that’s doable in the real world but even 4 or 5 hours is good enough for me. Of course, these rigs will come at a hefty price (starts at $1,099).

i think the price is fair.. compare to the quad core powered laptops priced at P100K+..

for just $999, i can already grab a MacBook. this HP price point is too steep(imho).

@Pusang Kulog, fast processors and good chipsets are a good use for engineers. Excel is one of the most commonly used tool for data analysis and multitasking between spreadsheets really requires a lot of computing power and memory. Our managers use the latitude 12 inchers, mobility with power! I’d love to have this one for my work laptop replacement! Price is cheap for a biz laptop compared to dells.

Tell me any application (for business or not) that requires an i7 processor but is just fine with an Intel GMA graphics chipset…

Gaano kalaki ba ang negosyo mo na kakailanganin mo ang ganitong klaseng gadget? I bet even the “Tans” and the Sys” wouldn’t need anything that is mismatch as this unit.

But I think hackers would love to have a unit like this. You could probably run a hundred terminals at the same time in Linux with this unit. Besides hackers and network security employees, I don’t see any other niche wanting to have something like this.

The i7 in this unit will just be for boasting purposes (if you will) in the hands of a typical user like me… He he he…

the major bottleneck is the the GPU. Looking at the benchmarks, Intel is prehistoric compared to NVIDIA and ATI. and look at the price range. geez.

and an i7 processor ain’t “cool” when it’s not bundled with a decent GPU.

  7. Avatar for Jad Jad says:

@jhay – if macbooks would have the same processor as this, you’ll definitely be paying more.

@joey – its a business laptop, which makes intel gma sufficient.

Ah yes.. Netbooks.. They can never beat laptops in multi-tasking.. Oh what’s this?! i5 and i7 mobile procs? Fine, fine. I just have to worry about the “dwarf-sized” keyboard.

  9. Avatar for raffy raffy says:

joey – it’s okay, dude. not everyone can see the coolness of a Core i7 laptop.

  10. Avatar for joey joey says:

I don’t see anything cool with this laptop? Pairing an i7 with Intel-based graphics – are you friggin kidding me? That’s like letting a dwarf ride a horse.

This is what we call super cool. My down on this lappym is the design. But anyways this will fit for tech savvy.

too bad it’s equipped with an intel gpu, it would have been a decent portable workhorse.

Do you suggest sir that I wait for a couple of weeks or maybe a month… maybe something better or a beter deal will come out?

  16. Avatar for StrayArrow StrayArrow says:

hooo hooo hhoo another one my list and I think this will be the one for me… sir is it already available here in the Philippines? Iv been using an Acer 5570Z and its quite bulky and heavy… and quite worn out but still very serviceable… what do yuo suggest sir Abe?

  17. Avatar for Jhay Jhay says:

I’d get a MacBook for that price tag.

The design reminds me of those good ‘ol ThinkPads my dad used to lug around before netbooks came out.

i think this aims for the travelling professional… especially with the price… but it’s nice to hear ultraportables getting intel’s new processors… and yeah it’s going to be a challenge to get 7 hours out of that thing…

This is one nice piece… but for a $1,099 or roughly Php 51,653, the unit cost more that it’s Asian counterpart like Acer Aspire 4736, where you can get it from Anywhere from 35K to 39K, depending on how good you haggle. :)

But if you are a brand specific and you have the money to burn, then you can go for HP, Lenove or Dell. I sure wish Apple will come up of their own i series process of intel.. unless their changing processor again!!!
