Looks like it’s never too late for HTC to jump on the Windows bandwagon as they plan to release two variants of their own Windows RT tablets in 2013.
HTC was reported to be already working on two variants of its Windows RT tablets – a 7-inch and a 12-inch device. The 7-inch tablet will feature calling and texting capabilities which is similar to some of Samsung’s current tablet offerings. Obviously, it’s an attempt to get into the ring with other 7 inchers like the Google Nexus 7, iPad Mini, even Amazon’s Kindle Fire. Both HTC tablets will be running Qualcomm’s SoCs with a planned third quarter release.
As for the question why Windows RT and not Windows 8? HTC has been considering a Windows 8 version but dumped the idea due to high costs. They have estimated that an Intel-based tablet would have cost at least $1000 a piece.
