Samsung Electronics has announced its latest Exynos 9 series flagship application processor (AP) and successor to last year’s Exynos 9810, the Exynos 9820.
The Exynos 9 Series 9820 was designed for on-device Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications and features a fourth-generation custom CPU, 2.0-gigabits-per-second (Gbps) LTE Advanced Pro modem, and an enhanced neural processing unit (NPU).
Its separate hardware AI-accelerator, or NPU, claims to perform AI tasks around 7x faster than its predecessor. The 4th-gen custom core delivers around 20% improvement in single core performance or 40% in power efficiency when compared to its predecessor for faster data loading and app switching, while multi-core performance is also increased by around 15%. The Mali-G76 GPU cores, on the other hand, deliver a 40% performance boost or 35% power savings for longer play time of graphic-intensive games or interactive AR applications.
When it comes to connectivity, the Exynos 9820 boasts an LTE-Advanced Pro modem for 2.0Gbps downlink with 8x carrier aggregation (CA) and 316Mbps uplink. For multimedia, the Exynos 9820’s multi-format codec (MFC) supports encoding and decoding of 4K UHD video at 150 frames per second (fps) and can render colors in 10-bit for more accurate color representation.
The Exynos 9 Series 9820 is expected to be in mass production by the end of this year.
