Nikon has just announced the new Coolpix P90 with a maximum optical zoom of 24x, one of the highest I’ve seen so far in compact cameras.
This super-zoom camera has a 12.1MP sensor and can shoot with a high ISO of 6400.
• 24x Optical Wide-Angle (26-624mm)
• macro mode up to 1 cm close
• Motion Detection
• 3.0 inch tilting LCD
• Active Zoom
• 1:1 size format
• 47 MB internal memory
• Optical VR Image Stabilization
• SD/SDHC memory cards
At continuous shooting mode, the camera can shoot at 15fps for up to 45 images. It has a Blink Warning feature that alerts you if your subjects are blinking while focusing a shot {via Nikon USA}. Nikon did not mention how much this camera will cost once it’s available to the public.
Canon has a similarly-spec’ed camera announced earlier — the Canon SX10 IS — but it only has 20x zoom at 10MP. I was actually thinking of the Canon Powershot G10 but I guess that belongs to a different class.
