jets

A blog reader sent me an email today and wanted to share some astonishing photos of flying jets escaping the sound barrier causing the Prandtl-Glauert singularity. As much as I wanted to give him credit for this, he asked not to be named or linked.

At speeds near that of sound, the temperature and pressure variations occurring at every speed can also be exaggerated in steady level flight. The mechanism for this near-sonic exaggeration of the temperature variations is the so-called Prandtl-Glauert singularity which requires that pressure and temperature perturbations approach ± ¥ as the flight speed approaches the ambient sound speed.

More pictures with captions here, here, here and here.

I am no physicist, but these pictures are awesome. :)

    i’ll try if i can get my hands on those flight simulators. thanks sa info.

    btw, i just installed Photopress, uploaded a couple of images but there are no photos found in my photo album. can anyone help me with this? thanks! :)

  8. Fleeb says:

    @hoop

    Yeah, may mga companies na gumagawa ng eroplano na sa simulator muna na iyan ginagawa ang eroplano bago i-test flight.

  9. hoop says:

    @joeyboy

    nice to know mahilig ka rin sa dogs. may halfbreed rin ako na isa pero pinapaalagan lang sa akin ng tito ko to so anytime puwede niya bawiin. dahil nga sa halfbreed namin to natuto nang mangalabit at kumatok sa pintuan ang ibang aso namin… hehehe

  10. joeyboy says:

    @ hoop

    pareho tau, la pa baby… doggies muna… me 2 ako halfbreeds… http://yugatech.com/joeyboy/?p=11

    ung tapat namin condo me pug at mini-pin… tuwing gabi nilalabas, pinaglalaruan namin pug… tinuturuan namin kumanta ng “who let the dogs out” :D

  11. hoop says:

    @fleeb

    sounds familiar yung name ng simulator, ngayon ko lang naalala noong chineck out ko yung site. Ito yung ok yung modelling engine kaya ginagamit nila sa pag design ng plane. na feature ata to sa slashdot.org dati.

    @joeyboey

    thanks, wala pang kid kame kaya dog muna pinagpapraktisan… hehehe.. kamukha niya si maurice sa madagascar diba? hehehe

    @darksparrow

    AMRAAM nalang lagay mo… para masmalayo range ng attack… hehehe :-)

  12. darksparrow says:

    isa lang nilalaro kong flight simutalor yung F-16 Flight Simulator, ang gusto ko dun yung mga weapon :) astig kargahan ko lahat ng sidewinder, MIG21 ang madalas kalaban…

  13. Fleeb says:

    @hoop

    Hahaha parehas tayo, harry ng sablay sa landing. Actually di siya talaga game kundi pure simulator. Makakaranas ka ng turbulence, kahit yung ice na nagbuibuild up sa engine, wind shears, etc. Meron yata downloadbale na demo yan, http://www.x-plane.com/

    At bukod dun sa mga plane simulator, meron din siyang space shuttle simulator. Sinisimulate yung re-entry ng space shuttle, tapos ihahandle mo (ang hirap). Meron ding flight sa mars kaya lang iba yung flight experience dun at di mo magagamit yung earth planes sa mars kasi iba ang design at manipis yung atmosphere sa mars.

    Bukod pa dun, ‘lahat’ ng international airports sa buong mundo nandun, at meron ding option ng realtime weather (meaning kung ano ang totoong weather sa isang lugar, ganun din ang weather na mararanasan mo in-flight.

  14. joeyboy says:

    siguro pagsobra bilis na nyan papasok na sa time spacewarp yan :D shaider! ngaun din!

    @hoop: cute ng pug. :)

  15. hoop says:

    @jaypee

    gusto ko rin maging fighter pilot dati… :-)

    memorized ko pa lahat ng designations, ex. f-15 eagle, f-16 falcon, f-14 tomcat, f-111 ardvark, a-10 warthog… very handy pag nag-sosolve yung dad ko ng crossword… napagsilbihan rin daw yung pagka-talentado ko… hehehe

  16. retz says:

    looks like a hornet or a tomcat, hehe. nice photos
    na-try nu na ba sa SM mega ata yun, Flight Sim (F-22/ F-18/ F-14 etc) naka-hydraulics and some more swinging parts (pwede nakabaligtad ka na sa upuan mo!) nakakahilo at first pero nakaka-addict once you get the “hang” of it, hahaha.
    OT: hey look guys i got my gravatar na! hehehe (joy!)

    Sonic Boom!

  17. hoop says:

    @fleeb

    wala bang auto-land feature yung game? sablay rin ako sa landing kaya sa games na linalaro ko palagi kong ginagamit yung auto-land…

  18. Fleeb says:

    @jaypee

    Maybe you should try the flight simulator XPlane. I had a demo but well I’ve have flown several planes already, Concorde, 737, 747, Cessna, Hornet… But I failed to land. It’s so easy to take off, the landing is the problem. However, you still need to do some crash course about the terminologies used in flight, like those roll, yaw, mixtures, taxi in the airport, flight plans, etc. I have relied too much on GPS because I cannot read the analog instruments. Hear the radio say “Squawk 9-2-0-0… Heading something something left”… that I don’t understand too.

    I also modified the Hornet so I could fly super fast. But since I am no avionics engineer, with the poorly designed wing – it broke off and separated from the fuselage. What a tragedy!

    Ay, I had about two successful landings pala. One is about a few meters off the runway, well yes I even went beyond the runway, and another by completely shutting down the engine so I could slow down hahaha.

    The good thing is you can fly and crash again and again with the simulator and be back alive! Ahihihi.

  19. Jaypee says:

    wow! amazing shots. when i was a kid, i dreamt of flying a fighter jet. fav movie – “Top Gun” :D

  20. Abe Olandres says:

    Darn, I couldn’t recognize them jets even if it were in front of me. :D

  21. darksparrow says:

    X-15 yata ang may hawak Mach 6.72, pangalawa lang ang ang SR-71 Blackbird

  22. Fleeb says:

    Is that an SR71 – Blackbird? Mach 5 yata. Ay F-18 pala yan.

    Di ba yung X-38 yung naghohold ng world record na umabot ng humigit Mach 9 ang speed?

  23. darksparrow says:

    cool, wala ako nakitang X-35 sa mga picture, speaking of jets watch the movie STEALTH..
