Samsung NX10 dSLR hands-on

Announced back in early January, the Samsung NX10 is now here in the Philippines. The dSLR is very compact and light but has all the bells and whistles of an entry-level camera.

Samsung NX 10
14.6MP APS-C CMOS sensor
Optical Image Stabilization system (OIS)
DRIM image processor
Full HD 1080p video @ 30fps
Contrast Autofocus with 16 AF areas
3fps continuos shooting speed
ISO 100-3200 (50-6400)
3-inch AMOLED display screen
Pop-up Flash
HDMI, USB 2.0 ports
SD/SDHC storage

While the kit lens is pretty much similar to the ones made for Canon or Nikon (18-55mm F3.5-5.6), the one that came with my review unit was a fixed 30mm f/2 pancake lens.

Samsung also uses an AMOLED for its 3-inch screen and displays really crisp and vivid images (especially in video recording mode). It can also shoot 720p HD video with H.264 compression.

Like the dSLR from Olympus, the NX10 has a built-in optical Image Stabilization. That should make the lenses much cheaper compared to their counterparts from other manufacturers. The NX10 offers users the flexibility of interchangeable lenses and optical image stabilization (lens shift).

Not sure yet of the local pricing but Amazon lists the Samsung NX-10 at $699 (~Php31,500) including the kit lens. Will have to test out the unit and take tons of pictures for the full review.

Update: So after making some more readings and talking to Samsung reps, the NX10 isn’t really a dSLR (even though it looks like one because of the inter-changeable lens) not it is a hybrid or micro four-thirds. I guess Samsung is making a whole new category for this one. SRP and release date to be updated.

  2. Ken says:

The best talaga ang samsung product kaya lahat ng electronics gadget ko samsung… SAMSUNG is WORLD’S NO.1 ELECTRONICS COMPANY.. Im proud to be a Samsung employee… VIVA SAMSUNG…

  4. dynca says:

i think currently there are 3 types of lens for NX10 – 18-55mm with OIS, 18-55mm without OIS, 50-200mm, 30mm . i read that soon there will be a k-mount compatible for canon and nikon lens!

  5. Doodles says:

The issue with getting a dslr other than known brands like canon or nikon is lens compatibility. If you intend to use only the kit lens for new dslr providers, then it’s ok. If you however want to invest in other lenses (macro, portrait, telephoto), then it’s best to stick with known brands that have a long list of compatible lenses from within and via third parties.

If samsung has readily available lenses for various type of shooting requirement, then great.

  6. dynca says:

NX10 is not a dslr. it has a dslr performance with compact usability…

    -50% bigger than 4/3
    -better aspect ratio 3:2
    -fast contrast AF system
    -supersonic dust reduction

    :)

  7. Danny says:

The pancake lens looks pretty sweet.

I’ve always had an aversion to buying DSLRs other than Nikon, Canon or other known camera brands. Sony and Samsung just seems like a risk in case you want to invest further into photography.

But then I guess this one is for people who just wants to take better pictures than what your usual Point & Shoot can deliver.

  8. Paul says:

Just to clarify re the statement:
“Like the dSLR from Olympus, the NX10 has a built-in optical Image Stabilization.”

The NX10 does not have a built-in IS like Olympus, IS is on the lens. This is based on the preview done by DPreview.com. Here is the link:

@paul – thansk for the correction. I read the PR docs wrong.

  9. guyrony says:

Cool gear, if it gets priced right here, it will be a great contender to Canon and Nikon’s entry-level DSLR line-up.

Sir Abe, just a random question, will the N900 be available here in the Philippines? I never saw one in any Nokia store…just wondering if you have an idea.

Thanks! Love your site. Can’t sleep without reading the posts here.

    @rene
    hahaha really right
    @josh
pro kana talga..kahit ako d q yan alam ung mga pancake..:D (but have a little knowledge of focal lengths, f stops and some).

    gonna search that..

  11. rene says:

josh is right what is needed is a compact street system. I am scared carrying all the best dslr in the street. You’ll never know who is in the next corner.

A compact street system with the same quality of a canon or nikon and a price that you can always give up instead of your life.

  12. symbiandreamsdotcom says:

Not bad…but 50k for Canon 550D is still awesome. No can replace Canon in the DSLR world.

  13. Adrian says:

    I still prefer Canon.:)

  14. Jhay says:

It looks so sleek and compact compared to a Nikon or Cannon. I’m looking forward to a full review! :D

  15. Lucien Tiojanco says:

Here’s a field I’m completely clueless about – cameras. I should get my ante up this field so I can give more meaningful comments next time you post about ’em. LOL!

  16. Josh says:

Excellent – if anyone gets any word on official local pricing, pls post here. It’s great that we get another choice for an EVIL camera system.

I’ve just sold all my Nikon’s after five years of shooting and am looking to move to a more compact street system – right now it’s a toss up between M43rds and Pentax – but the NX system is pretty interesting since it’s the only EVIL camera with an APS-C sensor.

Pretty smart move to include the 30mm pancake as one of the launch lenses – now if they can release a mid-tele pancake prime, then they just might pull the rug out from under M43rds since Panasonic and Olympus seem hesitant to find a partner for the 20mm f/1.7 pancake.

  17. kuya dan says:

ito ang pinapangarap kong camera… hahayzz.. kelan pa kaya…. nice review..

  18. kiddo says:

is the image quality good? compared to canon 1000D or nikon D3000?
