Touted by Sony as the world’s smallest and lightest interchangeable lens camera, the Alpha NEX5 was launched today in the Philippines.
The Sony NEX-5 sits between Sony’s Cybershot and Alpha dSLR line of cameras. It’s got a small and lightweight body but has an interchangeable lens system so you get SLR-like images with its 14.2-megapixel Exmor APS-C HD CMOS image sensor .
Magnesium Alloy body
3.0″ LCD (angle adjustable 80 degrees up and 45 degrees down)
14.2MP Exmor APS HD CMOS Sensor (23.4×15.6 mm)
ISO 200 – 12800
1080i Video Recording (AVCHD, MP4)
25 multi-point Auto Focus
RAW + JPEG
30 secs to 1/4000 sec shutter speed (+ Bulb)
External flash (supplied)
2.3fps continuous shooting (max 7fps @ speed-priority)
HDMI/Video out, USB 2.0
SD/SDHC/SDXC, Memory Stick Pro Duo, Pro-HG Duo
Although the NEX-5 uses E-mount lenses, it is capable of using A-mount lenses with the LA-EA1 adaptor so you can use all the available lenses in the Alpha dSLR line (including Minolta and Konica Minolta AF lenses). You can see the Sony NEX-5 here mounted with a large telephoto lens (300mm SAL-300F28G).
The camera has dual memory card slots so you can use SD/SDHC cards on top of Sony’s proprietary Memory Stick Pro Duo and supports capacities of up to 32GB allowing you to store a lot of those 1080i Full HD videos the camera can record.
Suggested retail price of the Sony NEX-5 is Php37,999USD 648INR 54,893EUR 617CNY 4,716 that includes the standard zoom lens (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6).

WOW! I’m going to add this in my wishlist!
Sana may maawa sakin magbigay ng DSLR ahahahah pero this one really looks awesome, Sir Abe!
Small but terrible!
sylv3rblade says:
The fact that it can mount existing Minolta lenses is awesome enough.
BTW, is the thing that looks like a bendable antenna the built-in flash?
Abe Olandres says:
@sylv3rblade – it’s actually a detachable flash.
@tristan – lakasan mo panalangin mo. heheh
Teknisyan says:
Heheh… this is a real nice… looks like a hybrid with detachable lens.
btw.. any news if they’ll market the new Sony α390 and α290?

@Crab
Thanks to you as well! :)

@Sir Abe
Is it a dedicated unit (not included with the actual package)? Can we use the flash with any other camera?
It’s in interesting add-on either way.

wow ang ganda. lalo na yung lens :)

the only people who say that DLSRs will become obsolete (next year at that?) are the ones who don’t use or appreciate them. Engadget is a tech site, not a photography site. They couldn’t care less about the utility of the gadget they just care about the tech used in it.
Not to say that tech isn’t great, there is room for both tech that makes things easier for people as well as gear that just works and produces great results for those who know how to use them.
So even though the “common tao” may think that DSLRs will die someday, but really, these are the same guys who never knew what an SLR was before they became digital. But photographers were still using them pa rin anyway. (and they still do actually). Yes they also have compacts, and point and shoots, but they will still have their SLRs for when it needs to count.
sylv3rblade says:
@beer
heh.. engadget doesn’t even know that it’s not the number of megapixels a camera has that matters :)
+1

@ beef
i agree but i think they’re just adding spice to the story.

Abe, please take note that someone is impersonating me. You can check this reply’s IP address. That’s the real me.
I’m sorry if you and your readers thought it was me. I just want to clear my name, reputation and of my blog.
Thanks,

@teknisyan
you’re probably right; it’s probably “spice”..
being an engineer though, I prefer accuracy (or at the very least actual experience)to “palabok” and guessing. The internet being what it is, so many people (for example, 14 year old kids)can say something they have no idea about and someone’s bound to believe it as “gospel”.
next thing you know, people start to think things that were here-say are fact unfortunately.. aaahh.. Off topic na.. my apologies..
beef says:
para on topic.. hehe
I actually like the NEX-5, if only for it’s video mode (on paper). Okay, Okay, I also like the way it looks and feels, got to hold one at a gadget shop last weekend (infosys ba yun?).. yes just hold, not take shots as it wasn’t powered.
IF I had one, I’d probably use it a lot. To be honest though, for places where I expect to get good pictures (read as “possibly contest worthy”), I’d still bring my DSLR, bulky as it is.

@beef
yeah… people think that what they read on the net are all true… like what they say “If it’s too good to be true, that means it’s not”. Anyhow, “THAT” Mon or whoever he is have a good life”
Sorry for the off topic. :)
Anyhow what’s good about Sony camera’s specially those that uses detachable lenses, more often than not are compatible to Minolta and Konica Minolta AF Lenses.

manong says:
@beef
funny as it is, SLR is a technology NOT photography. gets mo?
SLR replaced TLR in the ’70s then became digital in the ’90s.
2 yrs ago, mirror-less interchangable lens cameras were introduced w/c eliminates most of the advantages of DSLR while also do not have its disadvantages.
check d meaning of obsolete… it comes w/ the age of the user (does your lolo uses micro four thirds? hehehe!)
same features, big difference in price and weight? saan ka pa!
“anything you buy today becomes obsolete tomorrow”

@teknisyan
“A lot of people think that what they read on the net are all true”
but a lot of people also don’t read in the net :p
truth is a perception to every man… that’s why we have lie detectors… and guns!

@manong;
Yes, yes, gets ko.. i hope i did not ruffle your feathers in my first post, meaning if it came out as a critique, it wasn’t.
yep, i pretty much understand what you’re saying, as i’m into camera’s among other things. But i still disagree that DSLRs will become obsolete, maybe a particular model will, being replaced by a newer one, but the DSLR itself, i doubt it.
I am a fan of micro four thirds, but having tried a friend’s, i still think my DSLR is faster;.. faster focus, faster response, faster shot to shot.. not to mention i can get 500 plus shots from one charge, and for the same specs, currently, mas mahal pa rin yung m4/3.. the photo’s themselves though are amazing. but really, most times its capturing what you see that’s the problem, and in those times, the faster your camera, the better your chances of getting that shot.
So smaller, lighter.. sure.. pero performance and price for what you get.. DSLR pa rin. (note that you don’t need top of the line DLSRs to get the performance you need from a casual shoot).. again, on paper, same features, maybe better, but the real test is when you actually use it, does it meet your needs? It’s not for everyone, but it definitely is for some people. oh, but i also have point and shoots and a pro-sumer model (sony too!) and i use them all.
again, not a critique, just my 2 cents. haba. yoko na.. =)
manong says:
@beef
btw, i’m talking about EVIL not MFT…
i might be wrong if i said next year (maybe 2-3 yrs)but just like you said, the difference in performance/features is almost/nearly non-existent now… what more in the next year or so?
and the cost to manufacture is much cheaper than dslr, including lenses. nywy, wait and see na lang tayo kung kelan going the betamax way ang dslr…

hey i think they are available now at sony shops one i think is at cyberzone in sm north edsa:) im kind of thinking of buying this too because i hate carrying large stuff around my neck cuz its hard for a slightly vertically challenged (not that pandak!!) girl to carry it around all the time but im thinking if I really want to compromise speed/quailty for portability…also i heard that it drains the battery a lot faster maybe because the lcd is always on.. hope this somehow helps:)
