Rumor: There’s a move to position G2, G Pro 2 against Zenfone 2

We received leaked documents pointing to a strategic positioning of the LG G2 and G Pro 2 to coincide with the launch and release of the Zenfone 2 in the Philippines.

Despite being in the market for almost 2 years already, the LG G2 and G Pro 2 still have pretty good hardware and could certainly slug it out with the mid-range Zenfone 2 (ZE550ML and the high-end ZE551ML).

LG G2 specs:
5.2-inch 1080 x 1920 Tru-HD IPS+ LCD display, 424ppi
Corning Gorilla Glass 3
Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon 800 2.3GHz quad-core
Adreno 330 GPU
2GB RAM
16GB, 32GB internal memory
WiFi a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band, WiFi Direct, DLNA
Bluetooth 4.0 A2DP
GPS w/ aGPS support
NFC
HSPA+, 4G LTE 100Mbps
13 megapixel camera with LED flash, OIS
Full HD 1080p video recording @ 60fps
2.1Mp w/ front-facing camera
Android 4.4.2 Kitkat (upgradable to Lollipop)
Li-Ion 3,000mAh battery
143g (weight)
138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9 mm (dimensions)

That’s the reason why LG Philippines has sent out documents to all its dealers run a promotional campaign around last week of April or first week of May to coincide with the projected release of the Zenfone 2 in the Philippines.

One of the biggest dealers of LG handsets is pushing for a huge promotional sale campaign for the G2 and the G Pro 2 sometime late April or early May to coincide with the release of the Zenfone 2 in the Philippines.

We received a rather incomplete part of the documents (in Excel) being circulated to dealers so we’re reproducing the details here.

The new suggested retail price will be Php12,990 but it also comes with a second LG phone for free, the LG L40. Worth Php3,490, this puts the LG G2 at Php9,500.

Also shown in the leaked document the actual dealer price of the handsets which is Php11,690 for the 16GB model and Php13,490 for the 32GB model.

The suggested retail price for the 32GB model is Php14,990 and it comes with more freebies like the LG Window Case, a powerbank and an LG L40 smartphone.

The same promo price is pegged for the LG G Pro 2 with has 3GB of RAM.

LG G Pro 2 specs:
5.9-inch full HD IPS 1920×1080 pixels, 373ppi
Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Processor (2.26GHz Quad Core)
3GB DDR3 RAM
16GB eMMC
supports microSD slot
WiFi (802.11 a/b/g/N/ac)
LTE, LTE-A broadband
13MP OIS plus rear camera (supports 4K UHD video recording)
2.1MP front camera
Smart Ready Bluetooth (BT5)
NFC
High Power 1W speaker
Li-Ion 3,200mAh removable battery
Android 4,4 Kitkat (upgradable to Lollipop)
157.9 × 81.9 × 8.3mm (dimensions)
172g (weight)

The 16GB G Pro 2 will be priced at Php14,990 and will be sold with a free LG L40 smartphone.

Asus is set to launch the Zenfone 2 this May and due to the huge anticipation (Asus exec confirms their distributor is shipping 300,000 units), the sale of midrange handsets (Php10k to Php15k) have largely slowed down according to retailers.

Update: We’re correcting our earlier rumor that this is an LG-wide campaign but apparently, we were sent clarifications that it could be a dealer-initiated promo. Regardless, the details of the prices remain the same. Of course, it’s weird that the documents we received also indicated the dealer price and sales margins. Perhaps this is only for selected dealers in the Philippines.

I have the ZE550ML, and based on my own tests (max autobrightness) I can watch YouTube videos for 7 hours 30 minutes while on WiFi, maybe 11 hours without.

ZE551ML clocks in at 8 hours 30 minutes on video tests according to GSMArena. Considering LG G2’s almost 12h video playback (according to GSMArena as well) is already pretty impressive for 3000mAh, ZE551ML’s battery life is not really bad. Just average.

  6. Avatar for r2d2 r2d2 says:

LG shouldn’t do this kind of promotion. Including unsold phone models in a package will only make buyers think twice. What are they gonna do with that extra phone if they don’t need it?
They should give buyers options with other packages instead or just outright price discounts.

    • Avatar for Abe Olandres Abe Olandres says:

If you looked at the pricing, they also indicated the Dealer Price. So at the SRP, they make a margin of 10%, with or without the free unit.

    • Avatar for r2d2 r2d2 says:

That’s on the dealer side but I understand what you’re trying to say Abe, LG still have to earn or come up with a marketing strategy to move some unsold inventory. But the fact is, many buyers won’t take up this kind of promo if they feel they’re in effect, paying for something they don’t need. That’s why if LGs’ not bold enough to do an outright discount. They can come up with an optional package for those who don’t need a second phone. Many phone owners already have extra phones adding one more is more of a nuisance than a necessity already.

Guys, you should compare the camera shots GSM Arena with the G2 and zenfone 2. you would notice G2 has better exposure balancing and punchier colors than ZF2, but G2 shots are more blurry and they glow compared to ZF2. Although ZF2 Optimization feature shots should have been turned off the avoid water color effect in close view.

Luckily, I had just tried to use LG G2 last night and had it compared with my Zenfone5. Surprisingly, I loved how my ZF5 paved my initial (tho, not in depth tests). They both have 2GB RAM, the G2 takes everything when it comes to display. But the Cameras? Well, see if t for yourself. Cameras on G2 both show more light at low light but lacks details. (well that was just initial and it’s night then) but considering the higher resolution in G2 front and rear snappers should win, but the otherwise. The phone lags too much that I can’t think of any reason, I checked all the running, cached, and multitasked apps and cleared them but still, I don’t find it that fluid. Well these are just my two cents. But G2 design, screen are the best. Think they should remove the L4 from the freebie and have it priced lower.

  13. Avatar for dealer dealer says:

Most consumer prefer what is new, what is everybody talking about.

LG babaaan ang price, but consumer will think, kase may bago na lalabas. Hindi din sila halos bibili. Base yan sa experience namin as dealer in the south.

And it only means Asus brand is a force na sa mobile. LG ang tagal na sa market, and yet wala halos kaming benta, less than 100 units.

Asus..average 100 units weekly, since last year pa upon launching!

    just my 2 cents!

      that’s only in your store.
asus can’t even sell 20 million smartphones while lg sold 70 million smartphones.

lg is lg! asus is a good company too but not in the smartphone industry.

    • Avatar for nene nene says:

FYI LG G3 alone has already managed to sold 10+ million units and still counting and i don’t think asus zenfone5 or zenfone2 can beat that.

LG is currently @#2 in android smartphone with the most sold units just next to samsung.

if we add the sales of the motorolo and lenovo then the LG still will be @#3 spot.

please stop comparing asus to lg.

compare asus to htc which is also from China’s province of Taiwan.

    • Avatar for john john says:

Sabi niya mas mabenta ASUS kesa LG sa Southern Philippines base sa experience niya, ulitin ko, AS DEALER IN THE SOUTH.

    • Avatar for james james says:

ASUS is an up-and-coming brand in the midrange mobile scene. They might be new, but they debuted last year with a bang. With Zenfone 2 getting a worldwide release (US techies are in love with the device, not to mention the enormous Chinese market) you can’t really say that they won’t surpass expectations. Whatever can happen will happen.

      @nene
ASUS went past their 5 million shipments goal, they sold 10 million Zenfones in Asia and Brazil, with sales levels reaching 1.5 million sold per month. Indian sales reached 40,000 for the first 4 days. Not bad for their first generation smartphones.

LG G3 sold between 6-7 million units, yung 10 million na sinasabi ay projection lang ng Korean Times na di naman na-reach, and they have had three generations. In fact LG is aiming for the same exact thing for the G4: 10 million units sold.

      @john
Yes not everyone can afford an LG G series (or any high-end) device, but making that the sole reason for the ASUS Zenfone’s good sales is just uninformed and ridiculous. They’re obviously targeting different price ranges, and you’re just dreaming of a way to make people notice you and your expensive LG.

    • Avatar for G4 G4 says:

    • Avatar for G4 G4 says:

      *10 millions units of g3s

    • Avatar for james james says:

      @G4
Oh good, they reached 10 million? That I did not hear about. It was 6-7 million a month ago. 3 million sales in a month is an impressive feat.

I did specifically said Zenfone series, not Zenfone 5 alone. Previous comment still stands, for a 5-device lineup (with two coming much later than the January 2014 release of 4, 5 and 6) 10 million sales is pretty impressive. And we can assume Zenfone 5 takes the bulk of those sales judging by the number of users.

ASUS doesn’t really have any other low-end phones this 2014-2015, the Zenfone 4 is their lowest-end. China’s Pegasus isn’t part of the Zenfone line even if it looks similar, and the Fonepads and Padfones (lol) aren’t Zenfones either, so we can’t count those in.

I own a Zenfone 5 too, and the camera is overhyped indeed. Also due to the old 32nm processor it drains battery like a sink. The battery life should get better with the new 22nm processor but comparing a flagship camera vs a midranger is a moot point. Even we users don’t do it, we compare it’s cameras to their fellow midrangers’.

We don’t over-glorify our Zenfones to the point that we compare them to flagships, may mga papansin lang talaga nagcoconduct ng unfair comparisons for the purpose of belittling other devices, kagaya nung isa dyan sa taas.

Tama ka, I included G2 sa mga pinagpilian ko pero ang nag hold back talaga is yung screen.

      – Bigla na lang daw nag o-off yung screen
      – and may iba pa ata that I don’t remember

However, I’m still torn which phone I’ll choose since G2 is still a fantastic phone except for the screen.

I bought for my daughter the lg g2 32 gb version sa techobox when they had it on a buy one take one promo last year. so far ok naman un lg g2. snapdragon 800 is still one of best processors out there kahit luma na. im interested in the g pro 2 na 32gb version. sana babaan pa nila price. cutting edge and future proof ang tech ng lg. the same with Samsung s4, mas ok ung mga models ng lg and Samsung na galing sa korea na ang tataas ng specs. ung s4 ko na from korea halos wala pa din makatapat sa specs nya kahit luma na compared sa mga bagong models ng ibang brand. ginagawa tayong mga gago ng mga manufacturers na yan. pag sa pinas dadalin ang phone nila ang baba ng memory at ram. well dami pa din kasi uto uto.

    • Avatar for g2 authentic user g2 authentic user says:

well, in my 8months of experienced with my lovely G2 never pa ako naka encounter ng screen issue na sinasabi mo. I’m still enjoying my g2 i passed sa g3 kasi nga dahil sa long lasting ang battery ng g2 satisfied naman ako sa iba pang mga specs and features nito, pero baka this time sa g4 ko i upgrade ang g2 ko kasi malaki ang improvement sa camera at for sure mas long lasting ang battery kaisa sa g3 kung di man malampasan ang g2 ko.

so far so good i personally recommended ang g2 worth it talga po ang 30k pesos na pinambili ko rito kaya di rin naman nakakapagtaka ang sandamakmak na mga awards ng g2 sa ibat ibang techsites at electronics consumers rates and events worldwide.

naging top 1 na yan sa consumer’s rate sa U.S.A at multi awarded sa malalaking electronic showcase gaya ng CES, MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, Reddot , iF at marami pa. marami sa kanila ay itinanghal ang g2 bilang BEST SMARTPHONE IN 2013!

kung meron man naging issue sayo at sa iba ay rear lang yon at naayos naman yon dahil wala rin naman sigurong perfect na phone or gadget.

so for me this is by far better than zenfone2.

everything on this phone are amazing ang impressive….

reason for considering the zf2 is brand and price. LG is also a great brand. but the price is higher. so people with limited budget will go for the zf2. if LG is really serious in expanding their customer base, they should price their older flagship models within range of zf2 prices. otherwise, im going with zf2.

This is actually better than the overhyped ZF2. ASUS disappoints us with marketing the fast-charging variant with 2.3 GHz processor, but releasing degraded version… Well, if the rumor is true.

    • Avatar for james james says:

They would be releasing a ZE551ML 1.8GHz version, still with NFC, fast charging and 1080p. Same exact GPU.

Not so degraded if you ask me. The ZE550ML is even delayed to Q3 as to not hurt ZE551ML sales.

The camera WILL definitely hurt Zenfone 2 though. What’s with the pastel-ish details on the pixel level?

  20. Avatar for SunCell Subscriber SunCell Subscriber says:

    Mehh.. what’s the fuss about?

I myself would be interested in buying the G2 at P9.5k, okay even at P10k. But if you’re going to include a crappy low end phone so you could sell it to me at P13k, no deal.

    • Avatar for Z Z says:

not going to happen. marketing strategy nila kasi yun. malulugi sila kung di kasama yung L40. saka mukhang balak nila ubusin yung stocks ng L40 kasi sobrang lowend.

  21. Avatar for john john says:

no doubt im gonna pick the lg g2. the camera is way better than the crappy, gimmicky, overhyped camera on the zenfone 2. Sobrang noisy parin ng photos at video, then yung dynamic range is still not so good. This is a really great move from LG. Lg G2’s camera is also one of the best in 2014, together with the much improved LG G3 *OIS FTW.

Another reason is the LG G2 has better display quality in terms of contrast ratio and maximum brightness though theyre both IPS.

It is also a flagship phone from LG 2 years ago. And it is always a good idea to buy a flagship phone even though it is 2-3 years old than buying a recent midrange phone. sad to say but di na ata ako tutuloy sa zenfone 2. Di ko to inexpect. haha.

    • Avatar for ruel ruel says:

tama ka dyan at ang g2 ay lollipop na din at ang latest UX ng G3 ay available na sa G2 at ma I update din sa UX ng G4.
plus ang 13mp cam ng g2 ay malayo ang lamang sa 13mp ng zenfoen2. at ang battery nga pala ng g2 is isa sa longlasting sa mga flagship phones.

    • Avatar for skabuts skabuts says:

    • Avatar for john john says:

tama ka ruel. nabasa ko sa reviews at samples, halos non existent daw ang details ng camera ni zf2 lalo na when you zoom kahit 13mp at 1080p viseos. all u can see are sharpening artifacts and noises kahit sa daylight. parang oversampled 2MPcamera at 480p camcorder lang daw. iba padin ang camera quality ni lG G2, on par with the iphones, pati na din ang display. LG G2 FTW talaga. ito na pagiiponan ko,sana may option na di kasali ang lg l40.

    • Avatar for james james says:

Yes, the camera on the Zenfone 2 is definitely quite disappointing. But it will have to make do. Unang tingin okay naman yung shots, it’s only on the pixel level where you see the “pastel” brush stroke details.

Video recording is disappointing at best. It doesn’t even look 1080p.

Buti nalang bibili ako ng Zenfone 2 because of the GPU performance, not much because of the camera. Or else I’d be really torn hahaha.

    • Avatar for john john says:

yes. nabasa ko sa gsmarena yung details ng images niya parang brushstrokes ng watercolor. ganito din sa zenfone 5. di mo ramdam na high resolution ang images dahil dito. malaking disappointment. overhyped talaga. ang camera pa naman ang pinagmamalaki ng Asus sa zenfones nila. hehe.
