Firefox Quantum now available for download

Mozilla has released a new update to their Firefox web browser, which they claim is the biggest update by far since launching Firefox 1.0 in 2004.

Called “Firefox Quantum”, Mozilla boasts that it is over twice as fast as the version of Firefox that was out six months ago, and that it uses less memory than the competition.

Mozilla’s research team studied how consumers browsed the web to create a new and improved UI, called “Photon”. They have also studied current-gen hardware and made sure that the Photon Design System would not only scale to current hardware, but allow future expansion.

Under the hood, Quantum ships with a new CSS engine called “Stylo”, which is able to take advantage of multiple high-efficiency CPU cores. The browser now also prioritizes the tab you’re currently on over the ones in the background, so that system resources are not wasted.

Upwards of 700 authors have contributed code to Firefox Quantum since August 6, and 80 contributors globally have contributed to code development.

If you would like to try the new browser, you can download it here.

  1. Disregarding a few milliseconds, browsing “speed” depends on your ISP, not your browser. So the new FF has minimal advantages. But it has MAJOR disadvantages.
The great advantage of FF in the past has been it many beautiful extensions.
Most extensions won’t work with FF57 aka Quantum. A few “legacy” extensions have repacements already available, but most of these are inferior.
So if you value your Firefox extensions, DON’T install FF56 or 57.
Also take steps to prevent “silent” installs, where FF sneakily installs the new version without asking your permission.
    1. Delete or rename the program “maintenanceservice.exe” in your Firefox program folder.
    2. Delete the folder “C:\Users\\Local Settings\Mozilla\Firefox\Updates

    • buti gumagana pa mga extensions na ginagamit ko

  2. Yeah. My FlashGot, DownThemAll were all disabled as they haven’t updated yet to FF 57. Sad
