Microsoft reveals new Bing search and Edge browser powered by OpenAI

Microsoft has just revealed its all-new AI-powered Bing search engine and Microsoft Edge browser to allow users to chat as they would with ChatGPT by naturally asking questions and getting answers.

The press event comes in recent news with Google as well having introduced their own rival to ChatGPT called “Bard” just yesterday.

Microsoft Bing

The new Bing experience is said to feature a “Next-generation OpenAI model” that is said to be more powerful, accurate, and faster than ChatGPT itself and is customized primarily for search.

They also have what’s called the “Prometheus model” that allows them to work with the OpenAI model to help best leverage its power in bringing more relevant and timely results with improved safety.

Microsoft also says that the AI model to their core Bing search ranking engine in turn has led to the largest jump in relevance in two decades.

The new Bing search works in a variety of ways, one of which is a side-by-side display together with traditional search results. The other way is to converse with the Bing chatbot similar to how users would with ChatGPT but in a more familiar sender and receiver format.

Microsoft says that the new Bing provides more relevant results and more detailed and comprehensive answers. They also said that the new Bing can generate content while also citing its sources for easy referencing.

The Edge browser also sees two new functions: Chat and Compose. Available on the Edge Sidebar, Chat can help summarize webpages or documents or even compare different reports.

Compose on the other hand helps make content and generate text such as emails, social media posts, and more. Users can then update it by giving it more prompts such as changing the tone, format, or length in succeeding prompts.

Microsoft Bing 2

To check out the new Bing today, it is currently available on desktop in a limited preview with a few preset queries on Bing.com

Microsoft also stated that a waitlist will be available for the full version and that they will be scaling the preview to millions in the coming weeks and that a mobile experience will also be in preview soon.

“AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search,”

“Today, we’re launching Bing and Edge powered by AI copilot and chat, to help people get more from search and the web.”

— Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft.
