Stargate has been announced by President Donald Trump, calling it the largest AI infrastructure project in history. This was supported by three top tech firms operating in the private sector.
He was joined by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, and Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison for the unveiling. These companies will invest $100PHP 5,802INR 8,583EUR 97CNY 732 billion in the project to start, going up to $500PHP 29,009INR 42,913EUR 486CNY 3,662 billion over time.
As per Trump, Stargate is positioned to grow the United States’ artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure through data centers. The President-elect also notes that the project is expected to create 100,000 jobs in the country.
Ellison added that its first million-square foot data project is already under construction in Texas. It’s become apparent that people developing AI are in need of more data centers, chips, and other resources to operate.
AI leaders have for months been sounding the alarm that more data centers — as well as the chips and electricity and water resources to run them — are needed to power their artificial intelligence ambitions in the coming years.
The collaboration between OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle with Trump’s support has the potential to cater to these needs. OpenAI has been vocal about asking the US government for aid to stay ahead of the AI arms race before.
Meanwhile, Oracle is one of the US’ biggest data center operators. As for SoftBank, the company has deep enough pockets to fund the expansion of AI infrastructure in the country.
Altman says that he thinks this will be the most important project of this era. He added that they wouldn’t be able to do this without President Trump.
