Samsung 0.65mm-thin LPDDR5X DRAM for smartphones announced

Samsung has announced their 0.65mm-thin LPDDR5X DRAM made for smartphones. These are 12nm chips slated to be available with 12GB or 16GB, designed for the low-power RAM market.

The company is targeting smartphones that feature on-device AI capabilities, which is heavily contested nowadays.

This is built in a 4-stack structure with four layers together consisting of two RAM sticks. The chip itself is 9% thinner than its predecessor, with Samsung estimating that it will offer cooling improvements at 21%.

The chip was made by optimizing printed circuit boards (PCB) and epoxy molding compound techniques. This brings the thickness of the RAM to that of a fingernail.

At the time of writing, Samsung is already shipping their new chip to manufacturers. With demand for high-performing mobile memory solutions growing, the company is already moving to take opportunities to supply other brands.

Samsung is also planning to develop a 6-layer 24GB and 8-layer 32GB configurations into thinner alternatives for future devices. What do you guys think?
