It has been revealed by Smart executives in previous media interviews but no concrete details have been announced yet. However, it seems like the telco is introducing its own version of what might be called Smart WiMax.
A number of sources tipped in saying Smart’s WiMax network could be launched as early as May 15, 2010 (that’s this Saturday).
It’s yet unclear which regions will the service be available but initial speculations peg the plans to be similar to Smart’s own SmartBro service — Php998USD 17INR 1,442EUR 16CNY 124 for up to a 2Mbps plan.
Smart has heavily invested in its 3G network for the past several years (under the SmartBro brand) and it might not make sense to roll out a WiMax network at this time which might only eat into its own market share.
However, I believe Smart’s move is to expand capacity and provide a better last-mile solution — offer WiMax service to areas where 3G signal is non-existent to weak. This way, Smart will not look like its behind other competitors like Liberty Telecoms (Wi-Tribe) and Globe Telecom (Globe WiMax); at the same time, Smart will be able to service the remaining parts of the country not reached by 3G.

Dave Starr says:
Of course it would be nice if Smart could figure out how to even serve areas literally in sight of Metro manila, like the far-off baryo where I live (in Marilao, Bulacan, less than a kilometer from the NLEX and within three km of the political border of Metro Manila at Valenzuela.
Smart can’t even demo services like ShareIt or Surf TV at their sales office in SM City Marilao because they provide such crap service.
Spent three days recently at Subic where I enjoyed PLDT DSL in my motel … forgot what actual Internet “service” was.
To use my Filipino phrase I hate the most, “If Only” Smart would spend even 25% of what they spend on marketing on the network itself they would then indeed be a worthwhile company. As it is, it’s all just a sham … all smoke and mirrors. Sad.
Archon Digital says:
I think Smart badly needs to improve the quality of their 3G service.
With me in a 24-month lock-in period on a Share-IT plan, I’m not really happy that they are expanding with another service without fully maximizing the potential of their existing 3G network.
Jay says:
i agree with the guys above. Im near the city center and smart signal is so weak even without obstructions. They are just concerned with revenues, no quality control tsk tsk tsk if only i can ran away with from their poor service without being sued haaaayyyssss
manong says:
yup smartbro share-it user here as well…
if they could only realize the data speed of hsdpa 3.5G they have to 7.2Mbps, they really don’t need 4G right now…
anyway, as in every company, marketing has a much larger budget compared to operations. (especially if angel locsin is your endorser, who wouldn’t?)
Jon says:
Wimax huh. I don’t see any benefit why someone should shift to their wimax service. After all, it is still a wireless service. So expect to get similar problems too.
I still wish that Smart would just focus on improving their 3G service further, before investing on yet another technology.
osting says:
it’s too late for Smart! huli na naman sila….masyado silang nagfocus sa SmartBroTV..na at the end di kinagat sa market.
Herce says:
Isn’t it you Yuga who posted an article declaring that the capacity was the problem? I agree the capacity is the problem. So I don’t get why you think offering wimax would increase capacity?
Wimax is just offering alternative nodes. The capacity of each telco is the same shared resource among all their data products. Offering moer ways to access that capacity doesn’t fix the underlying problem.
Fixing the underlying problem is what needs to be focused on! Maybe Aquino can regulate the telcos and force them to build out capacity and invest in more external backbone connections. Otherwise we Filipinos will continue to stagnate and keep falling farther and farther behind out neighbors.
thi phak lhong says:
nahhhhhhhhh…for me it’s better to switch to DSL cable from PLDT for more accurate and fast connection and you can have a phone at the same time.
roiji says:
if i know this is just some marketing stunts…
4G bands at 2G speeds!! lol
buti pa sa sweden… :'( [http://bit.ly/5zMlFV]
see bottom paragraph (20-80Mbps)
dsl cable ko is 4Mbps lang LOL
Headline PH says:
wow…i want to try this one
Abe Olandres says:
@herce – I wrote that earlier entry and I stressed there that telcos are more focused on capacity-building. That means they’re looking to expand to areas where fixed lines, fixed wireless and 3G cannot efficiently reach.

Bri says:
Hindi ba LTE to?
Alfie says:
Globe is fooling its customers (isa na ako sa naloko nila), they will offer you a 1 mbps plan, sisinglin k ng P995/mo, but the speed is capped or nakapako sa 512 kbps. Shame on Globe telecom. Manloloko kayo kaya bumabagsak ang income niyo!

Leeman says:
Still happy with wi-tribe’s service for 3 months now despite getting a lot of criticisms about their cap. I commend wi-tribe for bravely introducing this system in a business driven by unlimited offers. For me, they redefined how we consumers should evaluate internet services before we get sucked into subscribing to a product that seem to promise the moon and the stars. First, we should evaluate how much internet we actually use. – It was only now that I realized that my heaviest internet consumption was around 5 to 7 gig a month. I guess the question is: Do you really need an unlimited service? Let’s face it. Most unlimited services deliver crappy speeds. For example, I used Smart bro and globe tatoo before (still do sometimes). Love their unlimited, you can download all you want but it also comes with unlimited waiting because of the number of users sharing the bandwidth at a given time. I you have a voracious downloading appetite and have time for it then maybe its best for you to subscribe to an unlimited service. The reality here is that unlimited services puts a strain on any network. Second, where do you primarily use your internet, home or outside. In my case, I use my wi-tribe all over BF Paranaque because I need to.
Anyway, its great that we have more ISPs to choose from. But before filling out that subscription form, evaluate carefully which ISP would suit your needs.
Nemo Trinidad says:
the thing with local telcos is they rush to provide the latest technology without even maximizing existing ones. they all look promising but they can’t deliver. they might seem like cutting edge but performance-wise, their services are more than lacking. I would rather have 3G that has constant signal strength and bandwidth than any NEW tech that is all but hype
Alfie says:
Dante says:
Wow!!! this will change internet@home with ZTE modem.. That modem is really slow… very slow!!!!
Leeman says:
@Nemo
I think the reason why telcos are pushing for 4G technology in parallel with their maximization of 3G technology is because of our increasing demand for internet and bandwidth as well as our changing lifestyles. Same is happening all over the world. Everything is being rushed.
yizhan says:
i hope that existing 999 plan holder of smartbro need not to re-apply to avail of the wimax feature. para naman ma compensate ung hirap na inabot ko sa service nila. imagine plan 999 with 0.01kbps speed.
zue says:
Guys, I’m from Davao City and I’m planning to subscibe to wimax service soon, which one is best?
gabby says:
gabby says:
dennis says:
@ zue
don’t use globe wimax and don’t be fooled by their 1 month trial money back guarantee. I’ve tested it for one year and my connection is really really bad but not the first month. Comparing globe wimax with Smart Bro (canopy antenna from motorola which i use before using globe wisux)Smart Bro is far more better than Globe wimax. If DSL is available, go for a wired connection. Its more stable.
Telcos are embracing these new wireless technologies because it has a great cost savings from them. Don’t expect these Telcos won’t maximize the 3G bandwidth because 4G bandwidth is much more cheaper to deploy and the equipment acquired by these Telcos in China is still going cheaper per bandwidth. And besides Air is free and copper is not free and expensive.
jun says:
so how this work.. pwede mo ba dalhin ito kahit san.. or dun lang sa service area na dun ka nag apply.. kasi di naman ito fix wireless… saksak lang sa pc or laptop..
ryan says:
sa una lang maganda ang Globe Wi-Max, dami na nagrereklamo sa kanila including me. Yung first month nila yung covered ng MONEY BACK GUARANTEE ok ung service maganda kung maganda. 5/5 talaga. DL: 1.3mbps UL .8mbps pero after mo mabiktima ng lock in period wala na. tulad ngayon DL: 0.04 – 0.20 na lang. WALANG KWENTA! WAG NYO NA ITRY!!
steve says:
Clyde says:
I agree with some of the guys here. Globe Wimax is a scam. Isa ako sa mga nabiktima niyan. Sa simula lang maganda. Badtrip. Cutting-edge daw eh parang pagong sa bilis. Pabagal pa nang pabagal. They are just after your hard-earned money!!!
mr. fox says:
Zhel says:
Thank you smart wimax is here!! i am a satisfied smart bro subcriber of their canopy for 4 years. But it is very unfortunate na binabaan na nila ang coverage to 1 mile or less and hindi na umaabot ang signal sa amin. Mabuti nalang may wimax na ang smart. No hasssle good stable internet connection. I just hope na maging consistent and gumanda pa ang service within my lock in period para no head aches.
Eleazar | Entrepinoy Bank says:
I’m a Smart bro user for almost a year now at kuntento na rin ako sa broadband speed kahit na may mga oras na mabagal lalo na pag umuulan. Pero kung mag-roll out ang Wi-Max dito sa Muzon, CSJDM, this is a good competition for Globe Wi-Max na malakas sa lugar namin, sa ngayon.
Brando Bandit says:
Smart Wimax??? Well, this still sucks! Same old s***. I am currently subscribed to their Smartbro WIMAX Plan 999 for 24 months. Wow! 24 months of pain!
Toto says:
Globe, Smart, WI-tribe..whatever..all these suck! I’d been in Thailand last week to visit my brother, his internet connection is 6.5Mbps and he pays 600Baht only which roughly converts to about P800! Then I saw from street posters other ISP’s offering 7.5Mbps speed for the same price… whew, I downloaded the newest Glee episode via torrent in about 6 minutes!!!
I don’t know what happened to our country… the internet service has lingered too long in the stone-age phase…
ric says:
