Speak and Surf is Globe’s answer to Smart Bro?

While we were on the topic of broadband, I asked more about Globe’s Speak and Surf and found out some really juicy details about their new product. I believe this was also mentioned during our last meet-up when the Globe Team did their presentation.

  • Out of the box solution for broadband internet and landline telephone.
  • Use the wireless internet and the phone at the same time.
  • Connects to Globe cellsites using a wireless modem/router via CDMA technology.
  • Up to 256Kbps connection speed.
  • Costs Php995 per month including the phone line.
  • Free text messenging within the network (500 SMS per month unlimited for the first 3 months)

Globe Speak and Surf

I was told that this hasn’t been rolled out commercially but they’ve been doing rounds door-to-door. We should be seeing print ads and TV commercials by October. Hopefully, this would answer the growing complaints for a Smart Bro alternative.

naka 2 years contract ako sa smart bro postpaid pero useless sabi nila may signal daw sa area namin but not really fast na pa ok naman ako atleast my signal, but pagdating ko sa bahay kahit pag open ng google ang bagal maka search, kaya nag reklamo ako sa office nila. Wala akong magawa kc naka sign contract ako pero hindi ko talaga nagamit ang usb smart bro,, kung hindi na ako magbabayad for remaining 21 months ano mangyari sa akin they will be accuse me sa kanilang bulok na connection?

  2. : says:

    hehe… asar…

d ako naniniwala 380+kbps upload speed mo, ang max upload speed lng for 512kbps bandwitdh eh 128kbps, so kung 380 ung sau nde kapanipaniwala, at wireless pa gamit mo, kung wired yan pwede pa cguro, and about sa wireless technology, nde naman tlga need maintindihan ng end user kung pano gumagana ang wireless technology, ang kailangan lng nila is ung quality service, ung katumbas ng binabayad ng end user, so ang pinakamagandang connection pa rin is ung wired, dahil sa wireless nde ka makakakuha ng consistent bandwidth

  19. Jhon_Vertucio says:

D inaprove ung application namin for termination for smart bro. But as of now ang current speed namin is 500+ and upload is 380+. Hope our connection will be consistent…Comment lang, i think the basic concept here is we pay then they provide us with internet service.

  21. czerwin says:

hello, happy new year na^_^ to all globe 3g broadband subscriber, i just wanna share my experience sa globe, almost 5months na me subscriber ng 3g broadband nila, sa unang 3 months ko medyo nabwisit ako kc natapat sa system restoration, almost 3 months din yun last year, cguro un ung mga times na pinapalitan na nila ung CDMA nila to HSDPA ZTE modem, dati kc magkasama na sa phone ang modem at phone unit, sa ZTE magkahiwalay sila, for the frist 3 months ko lagi ako tawag ng tawag sa call center nila, d nag laon dumating din ung time na nasawa na ako^_^ hehehe, nag hintay na lng ako ng magiging pag babago, and guess what, by the start of january 2008, this year, sa pag momonitor ko ng connection, ok na, february na now and still im getting what i paid for, sa 512 kbps na connection nila minsan lumalagpas pa at umaabot pa ng 600kbps+, and im using 8 workstation here, even sabay sabay ang pag uutube, nakakayanan nia, ofcourse nagkakaron ng load balancing sa pag distribute ng bandwidth sa network, ang problema nga lng nde ko na pwede sabayan ng mga online games, medyo mababa kc ung upload speed nia, so surfing lng tlga, but then ok na un, kahit 8pcs, sabay sabay kaya, sa 512kbps nila, at may phone pa,^_^ compare to smart bros 300kbps+ connection, pag nawala sa pag kakatapat ung canopy sa cell site laglag na connection mo, at wala pang phone so no use na ung smart bro kung nde nakatapat sa cell site, so u need to call a repair man, hehe, nde katulad sa ZTE ng globe 3g broadband, kahit na first time user ka nde mo na kelangan pumanik ng bubong to allocate the unit kung san may signal, and just one turn off and turn on, then youll be back to your connection, very user friendly, at kung may problema at nde tlga maka connect, still u can use ur phone to call to their call center, d katulad ng smartbro pag nasiraan ka yari na pag wala ka phone, wahihihihi, masyado abala, compare the price of smart bro 999 to globe 3g wireless 1,250. mas sulit na, and as of now ok pa connection nila, free unlimited call pa, san ka pa, and i know na the 3gwireless of globe will still be enhance, so sa mga ISP hunters dyan at mga internet maniacs, HAPPY ISP hunting sa inyo this year, hope you find what can satisfy your online need, and to all ISPs, SANA naman give us ur best, sa switzerland nga eh, where my dads live, ung connection nia is 20mbps, and 1mbps ung transfer rate, do you know how much its cost, only 2000 pesos, TWO THOUSAND PESOS, eh ung 2000 pesos na yan d2 sa pinas 754kbps pa lng sa wired DSL eh, hahahahaha, masyadong malayo, kelang kaya mangyayari un d2 sa pinas, cge GUDLUCK na lng po and GOD BLESS,

  22. Jhon_Vertucio says:

Hahaha ulit.. So nagdecide na talaga ako ipaterminate. Susme.. Hmmmmpppp, Kakagigil talaga… But in fairness to my ISP, mahigit 3 buwan ko rin sya nagamit ng matino bago nagluko.Sabi nga pala nga pala contractor bka may tumakip daw between ISP antenna and my antenna. Kaya lang very poor ang after sales talaga. Cguro tama nga sabi nila na its too young for wireless technology para magbigay agad ng maayos na serbisyo. Cguro mga 3-5 years pa bago tumino.

  23. c00lzap says:

  24. c00lzap says:

  25. Jhon_Vertucio says:

As usual, iba ang pinoy!!!

  28. czerwin says:

actually kaya me nag apply ulet ng smart bro dahil sa upload speed… comparing smarts bro’s 100+kbps upload speed to a 50+kbps upload speed of globe 512 wireless broadband… yes mas mabilis tlga ang download speed ng globe wireless minsan umaabot hanggang 1mbps upto 1.3mbps… pero minsan lng yan^_^ hehehe pero ang upload speed walang pag babago… the reason naman y gusto ko rin ng mas mataas na upload speed is for ONLINE games…. pero i think mas in demand ang internet surfing kesa OL games so isang tabi ko muna OL games focus muna sa internet surfing…

kya lng… bwisit na ko sa smart bro… hayss.. biro nio 4 times na me nag pakabit… and for the fourth times sinira pa isang pc ko habang kinakabit ng installer potek…. yesterday lng napalitan ung unit… pero kulang… and ung monitor nde pa pinapalitan… hayssss… kaya globe na lng ako… yoko na smart baka the fifth time bahay ko na masira… bwahahahaha…. any ways gudluck sa ISP hunting^_^…..

  29. May Evangelio says:

  30. dnniwa485 says:

    astig talga globe.. wahehe

    ———————–

im using Smartbro nung nakaraan lng…
    that ISP sucks… laging disconnect….

pakshit talga sila… magsara na nga sila…

  31. czerwin says:

and at the of your conversation sasabihin na..

    bwahahaha walang katapusang monitor^_^
ung report ko for the upload speed problems upto now wala pa ring resolution…

kung merun lng DESTINY or SKYInternet and EasterTelecom kya lng wala din…

Ung pacific internet naman for comapny lng daw nila benta ung broadband nila… haysss

and syempre ung ok ang connection…

    gudluck sa ISP hunting…

Wired vs Wireless Globe Broadband Connetion:

    Wired:
    Average speed mostlikely upto: 512kbps
    Average Download Speed mostlikely upto:70kbps
Average Upload Speed mostlikely upto: 90kbps

    Wireless:
    Average speed mostlikely upto: 300+kbps
but can reach upto 700+kbps on good signal
    Average Download Speed mostlikely upto:35kbps
but can reach upto 100+kbps on good signal
Average Upload Speed mostlikely upto: 50kbps
the same lng kahit maganda signal…
    un lng^_^ hehehehe

i havent yet tested the Smart bro connection pero sabi nila nag iimprove din daw ata…

ok cge mga bro’s and sis…

    Hi!

I would like to ask if anyone here has a working setup for connecting the ZTE MF600 HSDPA Terminal (given by Globelines) to D-Link’s DI-524 wireless router?

I bought the wireless router to share my internet connection. I was able to make the connection work by connecting the MF600 to the switch port 1 of router. I also changed the admin address of the router to 192.168.0.2 so that it will not conflict with the MF600’s IP address. I also turned-off the DHCP functionality of the router. This setup in effect has turned the router into an ordinary switch.

I would like to have the setup work by connecting the HSDPA terminal into the WAN port of the router not switch port 1 (where you connect other PCs). If anyone can share information on a working setup like this, will be highly appreciated.

    Many thanks.

    try this one…
connect ur MODEM to WAN port of the router…
connect ur router to ur switch hub port1…
connect ur workstations to the switch hub port 2 and succeding…
then from the configuration of ur router…
change ur routers ip to 192.168.1.1
then make ur workstation ip config to… automatically obtain ip address…
    try this it might work…
by the way im using also dlink router^_^

    smart vs. globe

actually i havent tested yet smart bro.. but i had applied 3 times to them… they tested the connection to my place and they say my spoce is being block by a condominium… so its not advisable to get their service… and now i have tried and tested globe wireless broadband with ZTE MF600 modem for 3weeks until now… its good on single pc internet access… for games and internet surfing… its Download speed ave is almost 250kbps+and upload speed ave is 50kbps… compared to dialup 56kbps max download speed and 100kbps+upload speed… before i am using tryisys postpaid account… and sharing it upto 6pc… and dail up works good for games but when u add surfing then the connection is s**ks..

ideal speed for internet surfing 512kbps+ download speed…
ideal speed for ONLINE games 200kbps+ upload speed

as of now im waiting for globe to upgrade their systems for wireless internet access…

maybe they’ll do something about this^_^

can anyone help me to extend the antenna of ZTE MF600… i want to put it outside our house to get more signal… im trying to research to make a home made antenna for it… any suggestions… by the way… the connector that is being used by the antenna of the modem is not available in the market… were can i buy that kind of connector…

I thought I was the only one having a horrible experience with Globe SnS. It’s been seven months now since we got our SnS and guess what, we NEVER got a connection. worse is that we get billed for something that is totally useless. we should have rallied during the launch of globe’s new logo. abot ang mundo? hell, no!

na-observe ko sa mga ibat-ibang forums may mga SmartBRO topic na kung kaka-install lang ang smarbro mo mabilis ang data transfer but after few weeks or so, biglang bumagal daw, i don’t know the cause.
here’s one suggestion i found in one of the forums that i read para mapabilis kahit papaano ang surfing ng may mabagal na connection. try the OpenDNS, configure DNS to 208.67.222.222

for your reference, the link is http://www.opendns.com

I have all the dates and details necessary to build a case.

I have been complaining regarding the SNS service in my area for more than half of my subscription… all they tell me is that they are monitoring the situation and doing updates! three months! ilan engineers nila?

it is so frustrating, eto ako bayad ng bayd sila nmn wlang improvment. so much for consumer rights! they even offered to waive ung pre-termination fee but when i followed it up, hindi pa daw na-foforward…

sobrand walang kwenta pa customer service nila… favorite excuse right now is network daw inaayos, so wala ka na habol. pero the same network charges you monthly!

  48. unknown says:

TO the TFC subscribers i would like to thank you for supporting………

    Hey Dude!!

I have the same problem.

Don’t even think of using a router.

Boy, how I wish di na ko kumuha nitong speak n surf.

To think I used to look at globe as the more “high brow” telecom, being concerned more with quality than quantity. Well, Globe sure dropped the ball here. The genius who thought up Speak n Surf should be fired.

Yun ding call center nila. Laging excuses lang ang alam nilang ibigay. Each time I call to complain about connection problems, walang palya, may maintenance daw ginagawa. Anong maintenance ang ongoing for months and months?

The only lesson here is that Globe cannot be trusted to deliver quality service. Imagine, i-roll out nila product na ganito? I for one will never be a Globe customer again.

Goliath, I hope the innove email addresses you posted are correct because I’ll be sending this post to all of them.

    Peace!

  55. Goliath says:

My connection has been running on super slow for 3 weeks now. Funny thing is it slows down around 8:00pm – I suppose when call center agents start working on their east coast accounts. Clearly a case of bandwidth throttling where Globe redirects precious bandwidth to higher demand, higher paying customers such as the call centers. Should be ok though, except they are using bandwidth previously allocated to a customer segment to serve another – most people would call this stealling!

Well, these people obviously do not know the power of the consumer… so send your hate mails to the bosses of Innove…

    Hi!

I just got my SNS unit Tuesday last week, July 3. After testing our place for signal strength and after paying 995 pesos, they left with us a Globelines phone and a ZTE MF 600 HSDPA modem. They also told me to wait for a week (or 5 to 7 working days) before my account gets activated.

When I tried last Saturday or barely four days after we got the unit, I was surprised to find out I can already make calls. I tried calling landline, mobile and long distance numbers, all were working. Then I tried connecting to the internet and it also works.

Since then we have been using the service especially the internet connection with some short disconnections. I tried placing the modem in a place where I believe there is strong signal and since then I have not encountered any connection problems. Download speeds range from 400 – 500 ++ kbps while upload speeds range from 40 – 60 kbps.

There is an indicator in the MF 600 called RSSI (Radio Signal Strength Indicator) which according to the manual should be turned-on constantly before making a call or connecting to the internet. Ours was not turning-on at all except for a short time after I turned-off the modem and turned it on again (reset). This gave me the impression that my account is not yet activated.

I reported this observation to the agent who sold me the service but received no reply. It is working well so I really did not mind it at all. I am thinking of buying an external antenna for this modem.

Globelines (or Innove) offered this service to only 30 residents in Soldiers Hill Village here in Muntinlupa. We have been using the service for five days now and so far so good.

We are living near a PLDT switching office so I tried of applying for MyDSL. Apparently they have run out of facility so they are pushing instead Smart WiFi (then) and Smart Bro (now). I actually have an approved application from Smart Bro and all I need to do is pay the 999 initial payment for my service to be installed.

I guess I will not be pushing for Smart Bro as we are currently satisfied with our Globelines SNS. With all the bad press Smart WiFi then Smart Bro has been getting plus their termination clause (which requires you to pay for the remaining months of the 1 year lock-in period) really turned me off.

Globelines SNS has a lock-in period of 2 years but will require you to pay for the equivalent of two months service fee in case you wish to terminate the service within the lock-in period. This coupled with the bundled phone line makes Globelines the better choice in my opinion.

  57. htc says:

I’m planning to subscribe with globe’s SNS, which the agent’s told me that they have 3g signal here in Navotas and Malabon (700kbps). I’ve got a smartbro setup here (350kbps++) for almost 7 months. And it improves a lot since activation. I’m planning for a SNS cause I need to be on mobile. However I’m not sure it’s performance in Baguio. Maybe it is useful for all of us here to know each posters location. and Yes, SNS advantages and disadv. I’ll be using SNS mostly for eMail replies and for file downloading. There are times that I also use the service of Rapidshare. I hope what those agent’s have said wont disappointed their clients. In fairness to Globe, of course you don’t want to waste transmission power to increase in areas where there are less subscribers, but see to it that they have sufficient bandwidth for all subscribers in that area to enjoy.

  58. Ed says:

I agree with indie. Something’s got to give with Speak N Surf. Globe shouldn’t be so stupid in just letting this service ruin the good reputation of their entire organization.

Whoever had masterminded this service should double his or her effort, as the DSL war was particularly strong this year. As I post, I was given a standing offer to move over to a wired DSL connection. I’m now tempted to consider their offer.

I’ve prepaid my SNS to cover 3 months. This will be the best time for them to improve its service, or its gonna be goodbye to them for me.

  60. indie says:

grabe! just using globe for a few days grabe! ISP Bonanza dial-up is even faster in attaching a very small, 83 kb Word file in Yahoo mail. I was eventually dropped with my globe connection so i just turned off the modem and re-attached my phone connection to dial-up na lang! GRABE TALAGA! I cant believe they sell this stuff even if its a lemon! I contacted my agent pero wala reply. I HOPE GLOBE GETS THEIR ACTS TOGETHER ON THIS ONE. Sayang talaga…

  61. SilverSurfer says:

i do agree with the comments regarding the speak n surf. sa mga pamphlets nila nklagay 384 kbps but then pg nainstall na and tumawag k sa kanila dahil sa mabagal na connection, saasbihin nila sayo na 256kbps lang pala. at isa pa kung mahilig kayo sa mga internet games, WAG na WAG kayong papakabit nito. it s*cks when it comes to games. and yung mga costumer support rep nila, walang alam about the product that they are supporting. tinanong ko kung bakit inaabot ng 1 day madownload ang 21MB na file, sabi ba nman sakin “kasi sir dapat hindi lalampas s 256kbps ang iddownload nyo, un po kasi ung maximum na kayang idownload”. amf! tama bang sagot yun?

  62. kRiSHNa says:

ei, do u know panu unLock ung DDD ng gLobe speak n surf… cant get support from globe eh

  63. Shack says:

Yup! meron sa antipolo CDMA nga lang ata (not 3g).

Maganda and dl speed ng globe, sa akin umaabot ng 1mbps, but ave of 500kbps. Pero ang UL speed nila ang basura! max ko is 70kbps, ave is 50kbps! So it means hindi pwede or mabagal sa online games and download ng torrent.

One more thing goodluck kung makapagDL ka sa rapidshare, kc we are using one ip address so kapag may nagDL na sa RS hindi ka na makapagDL!

Payo ko lang mag Smart bro na lang kayo, I still have my Smart bro (formerly Smart Wifi) kc kahit paano mabilis ang UL speed nya w/c goes upto 100-200kbps, kahit na ave of 300kbps lang ang dl speed ok na din! At mabilis ang connection and activation nila, unlike sa globe w/c took them 3 weeks to activate my account!

  64. jayr says:

may i know if antipolo is part of speak an surf areas?

  65. jackie hernandeZ says:

  66. Ashley says:

Sana ang speak and surf may software or tools na mada-download para ma-fix yun problema ng mga subscriber na di na kailangan ng tech support.

  67. Ashley says:

Sana mag-improve pa ang speak and surf.

  68. Kristine says:

We just applied for Speak And Surf, 2 weeks na.. wala pang nangyayari sa application. Globe Stinks!

. . paktay kang bata ka

  75. sugar says:

nakakainis na talaga ha! halos one month na ako tumatawag para pa activate yung service ng speak and surf na ito pero hanggang ngayon wala pa rin. araw araw ko tinitingnan puro no signal pa din. bilis tumanggap ng bayad saka magbigay ng phone and modem hindi naman pala maaactivate within one week! kainis talaga wala na nagsasabi ng totoo.

  85. shinji says:

im using smart broadband for 3 months now i can only sa n bulok ang service nila for the first 2 months pero ngayon ok n ng konti. konti lng kasi tae pag umuulan walang connection ano yun. nag offer p kayo ng net tpos di nyo sasabihin n disadvantage pala nya pag may ulan asar. nag My DSL nlng sana ako ng PLDT kaht umuulan meron.tiis lng tapusin ko lang 1 year contract nito lipat n ako ng dsl. smart broadband needs improvement sa connection kung minsan patay sindi and connection. at yung ulan sana di nlng kayo ng pa wireless. mag cable nlng kayo.

diba ganyan din yung Digitel MANGO?

  90. Miguel says:

This may be better than Smart Bro since it has a Globeline. I hope the unit has a UTP jack and they make it easy to share the connection.

Abe has some Globe DSL complaints here.

  91. jhay says:

Hmm…looks interesting. I wonder how it would actually perform. I bet Globe has learned a lot from the mistakes and mishaps of the Smart Bro team. ;)
