So the Smart Bro micro-SIM that I mentioned last week arrived yesterday and I got a few additional information about the plan that came with it.
The Smart micro-SIM will only be exclusively available to Plan 999 Unlimited of Smart Bro. There’s a lock-in period of only 6 months (shorter than the usual 24 months since there’s no device that came free with it).
The micro-SIM is initially available in NCR, Davao, Cebu and Baguio but you have nationwide coverage of up to 2Mbps. Will be using this with my new iPad 3G when it arrives later this month. Contrary to my initial impression, this might not work well with the iPhone 4 if the micro-SIM is for data and SMS only.
Disclosure: Smart/PLDT/Red Mobile is an advertiser on this blog and Globe Telecom is a year-long sponsor. I got a 6-month free unlimited 3G internet with the micro-SIM which I can decide to extend and pay afterwards. This is not an endorsement of the Smart micro-SIM or their data plan.

Good day guys! I got a technical question about the difference of ZTE Broadband kit from Huawei kit. I’m interested of availing the plan that was posted by Mr. Rotero.
I borrowed a Smart Bro Huawei Kit from a friend and tested in my boarding house and I’ve spent 120 pesos already but unluckily, the smart portal page is all I can browse (merong isang website na nagbukas pero it took about 5 minutes). That made me think that Smart Bro in my place is really slow so i thought of switching to Globe. As my friends say, when you are in the city, Globe is the right choice but when I tried it, it is just a little faster than smart. So, I decided not to get a plan using Kits anymore. In the next day, I happen to run into a friend and talked about internet and surprisingly he got both Globe and Smart kits. He told me that Smart bro is fast in his place and when he showed me his Smart bro kit, I was surprised that it is branded as ZTE, not Huawei. I borrowed it and tried in my boarding house. I was really surprised because it is almost as fast as the Smart Bro (with antenna).
Now I am confused, what’s the difference of ZTE kit and Huawei? How true is it that speed given to PLAN are faster than speed given to PREPAID?
Kindly guide me.

Madali lang yan kahit yong standard na sim pwedi gawin micro, just cut it carefully at gayahin mo yong shape ng micro sim. The same and chip ng standard at micro.
Abe Olandres says:
@rotero – nope, it’s different
rotero says:
is this the same with your sim?

Which is faster in microsim – globe or smart?
Teknisyan says:
I think they’re targetting the 3G market, probably not just the iPad users but other tablet/3g enabled netbook as well.
They may start offering subsidized netbook with data plan for a year or two.
just my two cents!!!

Smart beats Globe’s Micro-SIM plan 999 which has a 12-months lock-in period. Maybe I should get another iPad 3G…LOL!

nice…..if it fits my N97 in the mean time
Jay says:
any ‘leaks’ / ‘rumors’ from Smart and Globe or SUN on when will they officially release the iPad with these sims?
Jon says:
@sir Abe
Yeah. Sweet deal IMO. Do they offer the 6month lock-in period for the standard sim too?
Dante says:
Yahooo!!! now I can really enjoy my prepaid plug-it. As soon as this will arrive here in Davao, I will subscribe to post-paid na! 6 months lock on is not that heavy compare to 12-24 months @-@
Abe Olandres says:
@jon – usually, when you get a post-paid plan, the lock-in period is either 12 months or 24 months. The micro-SIM is free. It’s the plan you’re paying.
Jon says:
Actually, a micro-sim is just a trimmed-down standard sim card. Wow, lockin for 6 months. Nice.
Lezuric says:
haha.. parang ginupit lng yung ordinary sim card… :)
bellealba says:
@abeolandres Napabili ka tuloy ng iPad 3G? Haha!
abeolandres says:
@bellealba yup, napilitan! hahaha
bellealba says:
@abeolandres di bale 6-months free 3G naman!
