First time I ever saw an OLED TV was back in March 2010 when we did a tour of LG factories in South Korea. That was just a 15-inch prototype though but this one that is being shown by LG at CES 2012 is 55-inch big.
LG 55EM9600 OLED TV
That’s what 10 months of engineering R&D can do to TV displays. And we’re talking about OLEDs here.
The most impressive part is that this giant OLED TV is only 4mm thin — less than half the thickness of the iPhone 4S.
Took this picture above of the 15-inch OLED TV in LG Korea (t’was selling for $2,700+ a piece in Europe then). That’s how 4mm thin it looks like.
Of course, this OLED TVs won’t really see wide commercial release anytime soon (although a limited release of these units is said to be sold at $10,000 a pop). OLEDs are still very expensive so maybe it’ll take the next 5 to 10 years for it to become mainstream?

OLED screens are pretty nice but they are very very inconsistent in screen brightness, IPS is still the way to go when it comes to TV screens. Even samsung cant perfectly produce OLED screens at 4~8″ in size.
The clarity on that TV must be stunning!

PC Enthusiast says:
5 to 10 years is way to long. I guess it would only take 2-3 years for OLEDs to be mainstreamed or who knows, maybe by 2013, OLED TV will be much affordable compared to today’s price. IMHO

LG = Laging Ginagawa (sirain kasi!)
kelan kaya maglalabas ang apple ng sariling LCD TV…

Cute technology, but not too practical for home use. At that thickness, all you need is a wayward child with heavy hands. Or an overzealous maid/cleaning lady. You’re practically forced to stick it onto a wall for its own safety. :P
