Are HD Media players replacing DVD players?

If you go to Virramall these days, you’d see tons of these cheap HD media players being sold in stores (some of which, selling as low as DVD player prices). There must be demand for these as I’ve seen over a dozen models already.

There’s the original Popcorn Hour, the HDX Media, and the ones from Asus and Western Digital (perhaps even the earlier Apple TV).

Even the branded ones are becoming more affordable too. Check out the prices below:

KWorld Media Player M101 – Php2,250
TVIX M-3100U (160GB) – Php4,400
Buffalo Link Theater LT-V100 – Php5,400
Western Digital Media Player – Php5,500
Western Digital Media Player Live – Php6,900
Asus Media Player HD O! Play – Php5,800
Brite-View Cinema Tube – Php6,350
Seagate FreeAgent Theater Plus – Php7,400

Even Western Digital has a couple of different models in this category. I reckon hardware companies such as them would benefit a lot from people letting go of optical disks in favor of hard disk drives.

I noticed a few people here don’t have a clue about HD Media Players! I have the WD TV HD Live Media Player which has composite video and audio, HDMI, HD composite and USB and a LAN connection, so I can connect to my server and other pc’s on my local area network. I have full DVD and Blu-Ray quality movies ripped onto hard drives! I don’t even have a DVD or a Blu-Ray player! I have no need for a standalone optical player any more! There is no moving parts inside of these players unless comes with an internal hard drive. The more people using these players the closer it is to the death of movies being released on shiny pieces of optical discs! These players will not kill recordable DVDs as too many computers users including myself will still use the optical disc for backing up files.

I just bought an NBOX branded media player via CDrking for only P880 pesos, hook it up to my tv and enjoy my ripped and downloaded avi movies via SD card or USB stick, it even plays subtitles. if the format was’nt compatible just pop it in to the FREE app “any video converter” and voila you’re ready.

  7. Alex Castillo says:

media player is definitely way better than dvd’s.. i do enjoy watching movies, anime and series using wd tv media player :D

  8. Herce says:

I have a few SageTV HD200s to extend my home video distribution network to all my TVs. I like them. Overall, the reason these are popular here is because the offering from our TV networks plain stink!

I switched from crappy Sky Cable to Cignal a few months back in the hopes that the quality of TV would be better. It wasn’t. I have since disconnected them and sold my equipment and gave the rest of my contract to my uncle.

Its not their fault. The cartel system is such that we have to get most shows seasons after its over in the US and UK. All the foreign content is mostly distributed through the Fox/News corp racist blood sucking corporate grinder and there is no budget for quality local television. Simply put we are 3rd class citizens when it comes to content. We get only the scraps that are thrown to us.

I now no longer subscribe to any local TV systems. I purely download my TV and watch news via onine players like PlayOn and Hulu (proxies are useful) and got an aerial for the local stations.

Everyone I know who has a decent job and is in the younger generation is using something like this these days. Most have complex system integrated with P2P clients. Whatever your preference, we are forced into these alternative distribution systems so these kinds of players work very well for us and I expect the market to continue to grow as the market switches from the old people to the younger more tech savvy people.

    wow!

    @manaka
AFAIK Skycable has plans to release a Digi-box with PVR functions in the near future. (still looking for the link)

  10. manaka_junpei says:

sana nag-record nang TV shows at i-store sa internal storage nang HD media player

kailan maging available ang ISDB-T Setup Box dito

  11. carl says:

Western Digital has a very good costumer support. I e-mailed them asking for a product replacement for my lost WDTV remote control and they fed-ex’d it to me after a week for free!

  12. Kinny says:

It sure has in my house. We switched all our old Flat screen (not plasma or LCD) TV’s to LED TV’s and have an HD player in every room.
The resolution is incredible. Don’t even want to watch movies now as the picture cannot be beat on HD players with 720 or 1080 files.

My DVD player has been gathering dust.

  13. Lexty says:

Recently bought Xtreamer w/ wifi dongle – Php6,000

  14. Tetchie says:

I sometimes loose my DVD discs (when someone borrows it and fails to return it) but since I started using HD media player + my portable HDD I just let them copy my movie file in my HDD and my movie stays with me.

Also, when travelling (specially with kids),I can bring my small media player and and would have lots of movie choices stored in my HDD.

  15. dulfo says:

Just bought my Western Digital Media Player for Php5K at Cyberzone in Megamall last April 2010 together with a 1-Terabyte WD extHD. Next, I bought a 32″ LCD Samsung TV for P28K with home theater. Connected the two devices thru HDMI. And voila! Great video and sounds. 720p video downloads of my nephew was superb with the 32″ LCD TV and surround sounds.

  16. eRvN says:

Personally I am enjoying my PCH for quite some time now, matagal na rin yung huling bili ko ng dvd.

  17. iko says:

wala namang support for itunes content though (video podcasts, tv shows etc)

btw sir abe i love posts like this, sana maging regular to sa blog mo something like Gadget Price Watch. pwede bang next budget LCD TVs naman?

  18. IC DeaDPiPoL says:

Spotted this after searching: (other models lack support for MKV, 720p limited, and are essentially based on current DVD/Divx players minus the optical drive)

    umm..
There’s a TCL 32″ for 17K (below this now if my math is right). Other brands could prolly be cheaper but I put my lowest limit on TCL :D

  20. IC DeaDPiPoL says:

Prices of both Blu Ray players and discs are still quite high at the moment. HD Media Players are more practical since these use HDD (and/or a storage device on a network)for storage which makes it easy to organize shows (regardless of the origin of the media). Also Blu Ray’s DRM system makes it troublesome to watch videos on a GNU/Linux machine unless it was ripped off and re encoded

Really hope local companies would start releasing HD Media Players as well (eyeing Promac and CDRKing).

  21. myke says:

    + 1 on the vga

my lcd tv has a built in avi player but if I need to play a different file format I hook up my netbook(vga) or laptop(hdmi) I even sold my media player because imo these options are better

I still buy dvd’s but mostly just for the kids

  22. foodiemanila says:

@abeolandres i got my WDTV Live and super sulit siya! Now only if we had faster broadband sa Pinas!

  23. Teknisyan says:

yeah… HD player will only be a media player if your display device cannot accomodate the HD (1080i/1080p) that is required for you to really enjoy the HD videos, you also need to take in consideration your videos or media..if they are indeed in HD format.

All in all in order for you to have a compelling HD experience you should have your player, videos and display all in HD. If one of these components is not in HD, then it would be different.

rather than going for HD why not go for BD, since it far better than HD.. both on video and audio.

but as long as prices of BD player and BD are hi.. I don’t think we’ll a rise of BD players and BD movies here.

  24. Jedd says:

Where do you buy your digital content downloads? I’ve been meaning to get an HD player but don’t know if my favorite tv shows and movies are available yet.

  25. cris says:

Funny but I don’t even consider buying HD players, even though I regularly download movies and TV shows; and I don’t even own a dvd player.

After downloading a movie from torrent, I just hook it up through its VGA port (or HDMI)to the TV, same goes with the speakers

And for a remote control, I use a wireless mouse. Voila! instant home theater na.

  26. Fedz says:

For me, it already did 2 years ago. Been using my WD TV since then, it even replaced my cable TV since my favorite TV series and anime are widely available over the internet.

  27. Jhay says:

HD players may be becoming cheaper but as long as HD TVs are priced sky-high, DVD players are here for the long run.
