HDMI 2.1 specification released: 10K resolution, dynamic HDR, variable refresh rate

HDMI Forum Inc. has officially released the specification for HDMI 2.1, the new display standard that comes with a lot of new features.

HDMI 2.0, which a lot of devices currently use, has a bandwidth of up to 18Gbps, capable of delivering 4K at 60Hz. With HDMI 2.1, we are now given up to 48Gbps of bandwidth, offering resolutions up to 8K 60Hz, 4K 120Hz, and even 10K.

Other big features include support for dynamic HDR, which displays images with its ideal values, on a scene-by-scene basis. We also have VRR (variable refresh rate), which matches your graphics card’s frame output to the refresh rate of the display, eliminating stutter and screen tearing. It is essentially a standardized version of NVIDIA’s G-SYNC or AMD’s Freesync.

The new Ultra High-Speed HDMI cables will make all of this happen, but previous specifications have not been forgotten. HDMI 2.1 will be backward compatible with all earlier versions of HDMI.
