LG announces Quad-HD LCD panel for smartphones

Just when we thought Full HD is the king, LG Display has just announced the “world’s first” Quad HD LCD panel for smartphones.

The Quad HD (QHD) AH-IPS LCD panel bears a resolution of 2560 X 1440, which is four times more pixels than HD (1280 x 720). This new high-resolution display measures 5.5-inch across, boasts a pixel density of 538ppi and is capable of producing 430 nits of brightness. In addition, it is only 1.21mm thin with a 1.2mm bezel.

According to LG, this new advancement in smartphone display technology “will enable consumers to fully enjoy more life-like and crisp images, and even Blu-ray equivalent video, on their smartphones.”

  3. Abujakol says:

iPad 3 and iPad 4 are the pioneers of these range of resolution in mobile devices.

    • amasog says:

    • PinkyHeart says:

Using LCD Displays made by Samsung.

  4. silentwarrior says:

Walang innovation pag dating sa battery, this is what I’m disappointed at.

  5. wew says:

    • wew says:

nah, even though the viewing distance from the tv is somewhat far compared to smartphones, you can still see that the display is crispier and the quality of the display is higher, tignan mo ung recent yugatech article about the sony 4k tv and magnetic fluid speakers para maniwala ka tska ung cnasabe mo na unnoticeable na ung pixels pag 1080p sa smartphones mali ka din i myself experienced viewing a 5 inch 1080p smartphone at nakikita ko pa rin talaga ung pixels kahit di mo ilapit ung mukha mo sa screen

    • ID says:

TVs dont need uber high PPI/DPI density since you view them from a distance.

For Smartphones PPI/DPI Density is noticeable since you see them more upclose

An inch looks smaller from a distance compared looking at it up front so low pixel density in a TV would not be that noticeable since you view it from a distance

For Phones mas halata kasi 4-5 inches worth of pixels are right smack infront of your eyes…
kaya concentrate ang manufacturers sa small screens

Then Again…1080p di na visible anf pixels except for gradient colors.

  6. rocketLog says:

I say again what I said when the FHD screens start popping up. As extreme as this may seem, I think it’s a step in the right direction. This means that prices for FHD (the next lower tier, in general) will drop a lot, since they will no longer be the top tier technology and will not hold the premium price associated with the bleeding edge.

I still think HD (720P) is enough for phones. So this would be better used for bigger devices like tablets.

  7. abuzalzal says:

When more than enough is not enough….Seriously???

    • abuzalzal says:

yeah i know sir….but im talking about mainstream notebooks boss hehe, since the priveledged few lang ang nakaka afford nito

kasi nakaya nilang gawing mainsteam yung 1080p sa smartphone

    • Abe Olandres says:

I think it’s a chicken and egg problem. Economies of scale kicks in once market accepts it in other product category. In this case, smartphones are ahead of the pack.

    • Abe Olandres says:

Ultra hi-def laptops are already in the market. Macbook Pro Retina has resolution of 2880×1800 pixels.

  8. PinkyHeart says:

Do we really need 2560 X 1440 resolution screens on Smart phones?

    • Abe Olandres says:

For 7 inch to 10-inch phablets and tablets, I think yes.

      7-inch phone-tablets @ 2560 X 1440 = 420ppi

      10-inch tablets @ 2560 X 1440 = 293ppi

  9. voltes5 says:

This is madness..my eyesight is pretty good but I can hardly point out the difference between hd and full hd phones smartphones..maybe because of the way i handle my phone..

imo, we need battery improvements..no more of this resolutionary war bs..

    • wew says:

    • toyo says:

ganyan talaga pag istambay… walang matinong masasabi.

    • asin says:

ano pa aasahan mo eh di marunong mag-innovate?

      mangopya pa eksperto sila!
