After introducing curved displays on a smartphone, LG is now aiming at panels the size of TV screens. They have successfully created an 18-inch foldable panel and are currently planning to go for flexible Ultra HD in the coming years.
The 18-inch OLED prototype currently has a 1200 x 800 resolution. It is flexible enough to be rolled into a tube 3cm across thanks to a new polyamide film. Instead of the usual plastic, this polyamide film is thinner and supports the back panel making it more bendable. In addition, LG was also able to make a transparent OLED panel which is claimed to have triple the transmittance of current see-through LCD displays giving off clearer and better picture quality.
Though it may already sound to be an achievement, the company isn’t stopping there. Display SVP and Head of R&D In-Byung Kang claimed that, “by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches.”
Will we be seeing rolled up displays inside storage tubes of students in the future?
