How to get past school or office filters?

A number of readers have been telling me that they can’t access my blog from their office network. Sometimes, it’s not just my blog but a host of other sites as well like PEx, TipidPC, Youtube, Flickr, etc. Others tell me that their network scans all the domains each workstation visits and flags an alert if you visit certain domains too frequently (anybody familiar with WebSense?).

I’ve addressed some of these issues before by suggesting FeedBlitz and the Google Proxy hack.

Here are some more suggestions I can think of:

  • Subscribe to RSS-to-Email feeds. Feedburner has one. That’s also another reason why bloggers should go for full feeds instead of partial feeds. RSS-to-Email feeds are useless to your email subscribers if you only have partial feeds.
  • Use Startpages! Netvibes, PageFlakes, Protopage, etc.
  • Or go with online feed readers — Bloglines, Google Feedreader, My!Yahoo, MSN Live, etc.
  • Try some anonymous web surfing sites like The Cloak and Unblokr. These are the best tools you will need to surf all those filter or blocked sites from your network.

If you got some other ideas out there, do share them with the rest of us. ;)

I use Proxy sites, but most of the companies already block well known proxy sites, so better use newly created proxy sites and also use proxy site with unique domain name (without “proxy” on its name)

hi.. i am conducting a research about freedom of speech expressed through online journals and blogs. I would like to ask if blogging here in the philippines has an EFF counterpart. EFF is a non-profit organization in the US that defends freedom rights on the internet. So does our country has an organization like that? thank you. =) pls email me at myworldisana****@****.***. your response would be of great help.

  19. leo says:

Well, I guess the very reason why most companies are using filters and blockers is simply because of employees internet abuse. I read somewhere that at least 30-40% of employee’s worktime are used on internet totally unrelated to the specified job and wasting company resources.

  20. [email protected] says:

i use google feedreader to read blogs. proxify or guardster for anonymous web surfing needs.

blocked na kasi sa office ang multiply, friendster at youtube.

  21. dwek says:

Some useful sites that I need to access are all blocked! For example the filter detects lines of code in a programming tutorial page… BLOCKED!

  22. mr nice ash says:

WebSense! That’s also one of my problems. It seems like WebSense can block an entire category/ies.

This blog falls under Message Boards and Clubs category and all other sites that falls under it are blocked here.

Though, I never know how it categorizes a site.
