Sky Broadband seems to be tipping the scale for broadband speeds with offerings of up to 6Mbps and 12 Mbps packages for residential accounts. Just got a pamphlet from their roving people asking residents to switch.
Previously the top speeds for residential DSL lines are somewhere between 3 to 5Mbps, but 12 Mbps? Sign me up!
The new packages are as follows:
Plan 6 Mbps
6Mbps downsload
1Mbps upload
Free Installation
Free Modem
Free SkyCable Gold plan
Free SkyVoice Plan 100 (Free calls to US & Canada)
Monthly Service Fee: Php3,999
Plan 12 Mbps
12Mbps download
1Mbps upload
Free Installation
Free Modem
Free SkyCable Gold plan
Free SkyVoice Plan 100 (Free calls to US & Canada)
Monthly Service Fee: Php5,999
They also offer a 15-day free trial but I’m not sure what’s the catch with that one.
I’m already spending Php2k on PLDT myDSL and Php500 for Destiny Cable. Upgrading to 6 Mbps means I have to fork out another Php1,500 per month.
It might sound like a good deal especially for those looking into really fast download speeds but I’m in the fence when it comes to reliability.
Any Sky Cable or Sky Broadband user out there who can share some feedback on service reliability (i.e how many downtimes a year, resolution time, etc.)?

Sky Broadband Sucks says:
Sky broadband’s service in the Philippines sucks big time!
They offer very high speeds and promise a lot of stuff but they cannot really provide them.
1) high speed… downloads even in windows gets problems unless you use download accelerators.. I am guessing that because of their constant IP shifting or their probably speed throttling.. some downloads stop before completing. For example a 740mb file would stop at about 100 or 200 mb and it would say completed even though it was not finished. So you would actually need a download accelerator so that even if the download stops it would automatically continue and would not leave you with a corrupted file.
2) Online games are laggy. Because of their stupid service games are laggy or could not even connect. League of legends cannot connect. What kind of service do you think is that? Games could not connect?
3) Torrent.. if you are with sky broadband.. even if they say unlimited downloads.. say goodbye to torrent.. even if you are downloading legitimate items like linux OSes.
4) Customer service sucks as well. Do not expect too much help from them. Tried calling them but it takes a lot of time before they answer and they just tell you to restart the modem and connect directly to computer which does not really help. I was even told to email screenshots of pings and traceroutes… So I sent a lot of screenshots to them but still.. more than 3 weeks and still no answer or resolution to their connection, their speed and their connectivity.
I would just like to tell all of you guys… If you are planning on torrenting, or playing games… dont be fooled with the high speeds that sky broadband is offering. Because you would just be in Snail Speed Hell. I myself am planning on transferring ISPs.
red says:
Exactly. Well said. Their service is indeed retarded. Our internet from SkyBroadband never fails to have issues. Their internet service is usually intermittent thus downloads from torrent and other file hosting sites are as slow as dial-up connection.
Imagine the internet full of connection time out, game lags, forever loading websites, and interrupted downloads on an UNLIMITED 1.5 Mbps plan. What more can you expect if subscribing to higher plans when their basic plan is already a crap? The “ONLY GOOD THING” I can give about their service is that the speed really reaches the subscribed speed, sometimes it exceeds. In Plan 1.5 Mbps, usual sustained speed is 1.2-1.4 Mbps while it also bursts to 1.6 Mbps. The maximum speed reaches 2.1 Mbps, but not continuous or sustained speed. All other else, IT IS A JUNK.
Their customer service seems to be unprofessional compared to PLDT/Smart or Globe. If you have connectivity problems, it’s hard to contact them. They sometimes DON’T BOTHER TO ANSWER YOUR CALLS. Thus, they don’t seem to have coordination with the other staff. They will tell you that a technician will arrive at this date and time but believe me, EITHER THEY WILL NEVER ARRIVE OR WILL ARRIVE LATE. They have no commitment and that’s very disappointing especially when you’re busy and allot time to wait for them but they don’t arrive.
Just to give quick review, if you’re a person who plays online games or downloads large files, you will definitely suffer if you subscribe to their service.
To future subscribers of SkyBroadband, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Kaya dapat talagang bawasan katulad ng pangyayari dito. Nakakainis din kasing basahin e.
At walang crab mentality na nangyari dito, FYI lng. Ang crab mentality e nangyayari kapag tumataas ang isang tao tapos hinihila mo pababa.

At the end of the day. Masaya ako dahil me sarili akong buhay na di umaasa sa ibang tao kamaganak. o kung kanino man. sarili kong sikap.

“Walk the Walk dont just talk the talk”
Kevin says:
This comment was never meant to troll. Filipinos are too sensitive when it comes to criticism. Isn’t just easy to accept it? I merely advised to use Tagalog. This is a Filipino thread that concerns a Filipino cable provider. So what gives?
ish says:
Yup totally agree with exceed!
@ exceed – well that’s what we called “trolling” and there are lots of them so just get used to them and learn to ignore them!
Kevin says:
An expected response. God, why can’t you just accept criticisms. Just get over it. Done, yadda.

I am using the 6mbps right now at davao. skybroadband. well it feels diffrent in a negative way. because of speed test show going to that 6mbps or a bit lower with cnet. pero i dont feel that the speed is that much why im downloading a game from EA and some updates this should take only a few hours. well not. i can see the down speed for the update is only at max 200kbps. its not i hoped it would be. syempre maybe the server outside maybe the problem. im trying all the test. it just dont feel the kick of a 6mbps.
vhenz_33 says:
ahahahaha… all of you fool… what plan do you usually use and what area you are form… does skybroadband are nearly in your place? too far site of sky makes heavy bandwid to catch if you are too far away on the site… NOTE! it is a BROADBAND not like DSL… think what is the diffences of it…. from the meaning of it…
Louie says:
Agree the truth hurts and the government sucks ntc sucks thats why this was not controlled the law for anti monopoloy was not practiced anyway no competition at all. I still remember when sun offerred unlimited text and the result globe and smart trying to sue the company hilarious
JoKho says:
This company is the height of business arrogance. Have called them more than 5x and they never come. 3 hours a day outage with the cisco 2100 modem provided by them giving me a 192.168.100.1 – this is just 1 machine i am connecting to the modem. Account manager and TL are all useless. Do yourselves a favor and stick with PLDT DSL or better yet Bayantel and dont get suckered in – YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
insider says:
You want an insider scoop on this? I used to work for one of the above mentioned service providers. The thing is all the owners of the broadband business here in the Philippines do not formally compete. They collectively agree to keep their prices high and at the same price ranges so they can suck the customers dry of every peso. The price drops you see in the ads are orchestrated to appear that they are competing but if you notice they will all price drop eventually to the same range, hence no real “lowest” price. Why compete with price drops when they can have a monopoly.
alog2 says:
all I can say is that wired is still the best internet connection. da best pare! walang putol putol maliban lang kung d kayo magbayad

hi.. Im about to get and subscribe for sky broadband 12mbps plan next week.. im from baguio City. any feedback from this area? I supposed to subscribe in Sun broadband.. they already contacted me to submit all of the requirements needed for their approval which it takes 1 week only.. But the worst is its been almost 2 months and still no feedback from them.. so this is my only option.. please give me some feedback at patricia_mendoz****@****.***.. Thank you!
Kevin says:
So are you advising to stay away from Cablelink Internet?
katchupoy says:
I’m about to get the Sky Broadband 6mbps plan this weekend. I live near President’s Ave. in Paranaque. Any feedback from that area? My only other option is PLDT and by no means do I ever want to return to them for as long as I live. If skycable in that area performs really badly, I may decide not to have the installation done at all. I’m surprised to see comments such as constant disconnections, etc… Cablelink doesn’t have any of those issues. They’re just really slow. Please provide factual data. Thanks in advance.
ice says:
I’m a subscriber of sky broadband bundle pack. The connection is not really reliable and the speed? bummer. My previous PLDT connection is way way way better!
Juyness says:
Hi all…I stumbled upon this site when I was searching for skybroadband reviews…Thank you so much for sharing your views and personal experience…now I am sure I can make a better decision. I think I’ll stick with my PLDT DSL for now. This was actually a bummer cause I got all worked up with getting Sky cause they offered a cheaper deal for 1.5 mbps. I work from home and am online almost ALL the time so I need very stable internet connection. I have actually tried alot of providers…namely: smart, globe and sun…I am keeping my globe superstick for back up plus I get to browse using my mobile even if i am outside…I will definitely check this site from time to time as I know I’ll get more cool stuff…@El Kapitan – thanks for the cool site…imma make that my homepage =)
Mike says:
Yes, competition is the key, but what happens?
Smart challenges PLDT, PLDT buys Smart.
Sun challenges Smart, PLDT buys Sun.
So in effect, there are only three providers: PLDT/Smart/Sun, Globe, and Sky.

Chosenbydestiny says:
We definitely lack the leaders to execute these high tier goals. I’m an American/Filipino dual citizen and I’ve lived here over a year now and I’m seeing the same thing you guys are. But what can we really do about it? Yell at the politicians on TV? Spite the big time mall and franchise owners? Who are we and what kind of power do we have? This isn’t America where the supposed “freedom of speech” reigns mighty. The nation and government is still quite new, despite the fact that it’s methods and corruption have gotten real old. The average citizen out here is not respected, not listened to, and not worthy of an opinion for many reasons. Mainly culture and religion, proven in history to regulate conformity. The rest are bad habits passed on from parents who “didn’t know any better” or were just downright ignorant. That’s what keeps locking us into the third world position. Before this country can be great, the education has to be greater. The politicians we have now only know what they were taught. Everything cannot change in a day. But more and more of us are becoming aware, and though that’s a good thing, we need more people who will take action. Making all of these statements on the internet are about as good as sitting on your ass and watching the world die.
Patrick says:
I do not know if people in the Philippines are actually excited for this. Heck, sky even proposed a 112mbps (which is complete bs).
In my home country, this kind of internet speed is ridiculously slow plus the fact that the price is actually HIGHER with a slower speed. (Korea)
In case of the Philippines, they don’t “create” their own internet service, rather, they get it from singapore (?). Which is the reason why in when Earthquake struck on the internet line between singapore and philippines, the internet got crappy-er.
Honestly, living here for 10 years, the biggest problem in this country right now, in technical issues, is that the top tier ones wouldn’t just give a chance for others to become one of them. They fool people with their blasted mouth and ends up getting fucked up. But since they are the only ones providing, no ones else can’t do anything about it but just to use their service.
PLDT was shitty ever since the company was formed. (Shitty by means of their service).
Sky, good speed in rich locations. Crappy at average to poor locations.
Smart, Fuck them. The worse internet promoter and service that could ever exist in the planet, worse than Nigeria.
Globe, Logically, shouldn’t Ayala Alabang get the fastest in all locations since Ayala actually owns globe? This is pretty retarded on the fact that Globe’s internet only gets slower and slower every month.
I do not know about others since I have not tried them.
But as far as I can tell, all internet providers are bullshitting everyone. Globe is a definite no-no (considering 30+ disconnects per day).
Only if these retarded internet providers realized that lowering the price will actually increase they’re net income value through the populous amount. Why do you think Korea keeps dropping down the prices for Phone Calls, Internet Services, and others? Its because they realized a better marketing system. Which is why there came a competition, which is why Korea gained the fastest internet speed in the world record.
Another thing they have to realize is that they SHOULD NOT put internet cables above. In ALL 1st world countries, they put it in underground, so that there wouldn’t be any disconnections and internet latency due to the conflict the wire will get from the environment.
Look at Japan, they still had a fast enough internet even after that Earthquake and Tsunami. They even had a freaking WiFi everywhere in Japan, so there were no problems in case of contacting other people through internet.
Philippines (or should I say the higher ones) should awake from their illusion that they are in the same position as other technological countries, and throw away their bullshit corrupted minds and start realizing that they are far behind most of the countries in the world. Im so sick and tired of this bs in Philippines. They don’t even deserve to be called “Catholics” if they actually were. Heck, even Noynoy isn’t doing shit.
I bet because of this crappy internet services, many people failed their lives from “trying” to depend their life to the internet in the Philippines.
ronelm2000 says:
Heck, it’s so true. The only reason no one’s bothering is that it’s always about “gaining money asily” than “gaining more in the long run through transparency”. Seriously, if only we could meet such a businessman (in this kind of competition) with oh-so-transparent principles and faithful service, I’ll support it all the way. Transparency means no catches, no “up to”‘s, and helpful customer service.
FHM says:
Hey, that’s our country you’re talking about. Please don’t portray us as being so jaded not to know where we stand. I agree with you regarding the internet being extremely slow, corruption being prevalent, high electricity costs, and all, but it would be unfair to compare us with Japan, Korea and other 1st world nations. We do not have any illusion of being a third world country, but we still get by. Technologically, is another matter, there are inadequate and incompetent people whether they are in a 1st World or a 3rd World country. I believe, some of our tech people can just as well compete with the best of them in other countries, even better at times, considering most would be more creative having very little resources at hand.
Consider yourself still lucky, that here being a foreigner like you are, you are still treated with respect and reverence. I am sure you are still enjoying it here otherwise you would have left a long time ago.
But yes, the Internet speed is still crappy here, but this is what we get.
keith says:
Hi Patrick
Man your so right about the Philippines, been here for 12 years, and nothing has gotten any better, when are they ever going to wake up, they have the highest electric cost in the world, so most people can’t afford the expensive INTERNET, then have to pay for the expensive electric to run it, this is on top of all the Brown-Outs the country keeps imposing on everyone, Brown-outs are a thing of the past in every country but a few.
Then on top of all this, there is Corruption only the way Filipinos know how, rob the poor and give to the rich, and yea, noynoy seems to have done absolutely naff all to help his own peoplpe, he is surrounded by rich corruption, thats never going to change.
Wake up People, only you can do anything about it.
keithy says:
Hi all.
Back again, why are you people here in the Philippines getting so excited with 12MBps, and at such a high cost, this is very very expensive in comparison to what is given in the western world.
In a country where there is so little cash, apart from the five families at the top! who are strangling the PH, why is it so expensive to get such normal speed as 12 MBps, this cost around 1,000ph in the UK, this is for the rich only in the PH, the mass market will never get a change with the corruption here.
Cal says:
Well, Sky belongs to one of those families. Price gouging is expected.
GMScott says:

Here in our province (isabela) we’re using Smart bro, uhm for the plan 999 the internet speeds here can crank up to 1.8mbps… at wee hours in the morning it reaches up to 2.1 mbps
Kinda amazing whenever I compare it to my uncle’s DSL connection in manila, then again… It’s a rather congested network.
nate says:

3 mos ago, got problem with my pldt dsl – lost my phone’s dial tone which is connected with my dsl. and siempre damay din internet ko, been using pldt dsl for the past 7 years, and i’m paying 5,000/mo for small biz plan with 3.5 mbps. i normally encounter problems lasting from 2-3 days na wala totally internet, at pag minalas malas pa, umaabot ng 1 wk! he he, normal lang yan sa pldt (2-3x / yr in occurence). so got a chance to try Sky broadband (6mbps) free trial for 15 days, on my ist 3 days ok ang speed, pero napansin ko every 4pm to 10pm bumabagsak download speed ko sa 1.2 to 2.5mbps, (same with pldt during peak time.) 2nd thing is that naka fully exposed cable nila sa labas ng shop ko (attached only at the wall just 4 ft from the ground (very vulnerable to sabotage), sabi nila ganun daw talaga, di raw pwede itaas so ginawa ko pinalagyan ko pa ng matigas na screen (gastos – P500), on the 4th day, naayos na pldt ko, pero itinuloy ko pa rin pag test sa sky, on the 8th day, may dumating nangumusta from sky, i asked what’s gonna happen to my internet after a typhoon? sabi, wag lang may bumagsak na puno or meralco post along cable way may net ka pa rin, i asked “how long just in case?” 2-5 days to be honest. next day i requested sky to stop my trial. main reason? the agent promised to me di bababa sa 4mbps even peak hours (over sell). and even told me to subscribe to 12mbps instead. sigh!

I hate PLDT!!! 95% of the time customer service sucks real bad.. i do get 700kbps @ speedtest on my 1mbps plan but my browsing is freakin slow. watchin clips on youtube makes me sick coz you have to pause it 1st and wait for it to buff for atleast 5-10 minutes.. damn.. you’ll get 300-400+ high pings on so many games like cod4 and shit so its delay like hell!! i dunno to me pldt is a pain in the ass.. im goin to try this bayantel or sky.. f*ck pldt

speedtest.net my friend is not really a reliable internet test website, it’s like a fraud or a hoax, they tell you that ur download and upload speed is fast, but base on what ur experiencing, it’s the other way around, i have also tried that so many times, and they give us something like x2 of our real download speed.

@Patrick Seems good news…Maybe if I can hear from others I might be pursuaded to get Sky Broadband (somehow…)
Terrence says:
This is far worse than my previous sun broadband. It gets disconnected so many times during the day that you can’t play consistently. And the speed is not so awesome too. I don’t recommend this for online gamers, take it from an annoyed gamer.
FHM says:
Patrick, that seems interesting, unfortunately, I just signed up with Globe last Dec, but will monitor the development. I really want a fast connection for HD streaming which requires 5Mbps.
Kev says:
When will the Tattoo Torque be available in most areas in Metro Manila?
Patrick says:
@FHM,
Wow, we live really close by.
Well, I got this Internet Cable (Yes its a cable [ Fiber Optics]) Somewhere in August 2010. They are indeed very consistent on download speed (Of course, depending on which server your downloading from) but video streaming, quite faster than globe, just a little bit faster.
Its strange though, at first, I was getting a really slow connnection from Sky, then after a few weeks, the download speed started to jump till around 800~900kb/s.
As far as I know, Sky changed their cables in many areas. Many of my friends who are using sky get good Internet Speed (even these in Madrigal, they get better 1.5mb/s).
I think its just that sky started to focus on service and quality. Who knows.
Dhard says:
hi. i just want to ask what kind of torrent are you using? thanks.
FHM says:
Patrick, what area in AAV are you at, I am also from AAV and I never got that speed which was why I decided to move from Skycable see my post way up Dec, 2009. Do you get consistent speeds even at night, bec when I was with Sky, it was fast only in the morning and extremely slow at night. Was there an update in the lines or was I just the unlucky one. I am along Country Club Dr.
I have since moved to PLDT and now on Globe. Globe is consistent but is still too slow for HD streaming. Waiting for the Tattoo Torque to come.
Patrick says:
@ronelm2000
I live in AAV (Ayala Alabang Village), in Muntinlupa. In here, it seems that all the sky subscribers are getting fast internet. Such as, one of my friends here gets 1.5 mb/s pronto from sky.
I’m not really sure how it goes, but PLDT is fast in Makati and Manila, Sky is fast here, and Others (Idk)..
And Yeah, a 4mbps with 999 would crack the fire for some competition.
ronelm2000 says:
@Patrick
What area is that? Maybe the distribution of data speeds are depending on the area? (I envy you…’cus many other users are getting ripped off by Sky, but yours is different. There must be an explanation to this. My guess is the area.)
Sad to say though, these broadband companies are such rip offs. XD I wish there’s somebody out there to at least provide a reliable 4 mbps service for 999 PHP. That’ll teach them. =P
Patrick says:
@Robert.
Yes, 112 mbps is world class, however, its too expensive, which doesn’t really make it world class. Until that 112mbps come down to around 900 pesos in here, it can’t be considered as world class. Heck in my home country, S. Korea, I pay less than 2000 pesos to get 100MBs (100 000 mbps). Its all about competition. There just need to be more competition around Philippines.
Robert says:
Hi sorry I think I mean 11 Mbps and on some tests it can be beyond the 12 Mbps that’s promised unto 20 mbps . I understand it will increase to 112 mbps which will be world class , it’s already faster than my apattment in hong kong with PCCW and almost as fast as my house in London with BT
Patrick says:
@Robert,
what do you mean by 20mb? Do you mean by 20 000 kb/s? Which means you download 20 mb file in 1 second? How is that possible here? I haven’t seen an internet speed that fast in the Philippines.
If what you claim is to be true, then I hope it will come to AAVA and the rest of the locations in the Philippines. Good to see Philippines finally improving in Internet monopoly.
Robert says:
We have had Sky cable for 10 months in La Posada Sucat – its average download is consistant at 11 mb and its transformed our lives. At times we can get download speeds of 20mb – late at night or early morning. At last we can use I tunes etc no problem. Movie in 15 to 20 mins. Only one service loss and that was fixed in 1 hour. Will upgrade when the faster speed becomes avialable. Well done Sky cable
Know as for my other house in Batangas……we can even get Smartbro

Patrick says:
Hi again. I’m posting once more because I’m getting a constant awesome internet connection from sky.
Ever since I tried to download a torrent, its giving me 1.0 MB/s. 1000kb/s. I was going like, wow….finally.
To remind you guys, I’m having the 4mbps connection. Meaning to say, I’m currently gaining more Internet connection than the amount that they are willing to give. I guess I can say, Sky is indeed very fast. However, I still have to see after a year since this is the biggest problem in all internet providers. At the first month or year, its really good, then it turns out terrible. Now it has been more than 4 months. And I’m looking forward for a content internet connection.
(Currently downloading so many torrent :D 400mb -> 3~6 minutes!
Nic says:
SkyBroadband already has 112mbs plan but for 20,000php. To be honest, that’s quite a rip off. I’m sticking with my PLDT 3+mbs for 2,000php that I had for a little over 5 years now. Always stayed at 3 for download and a little over .5 for upload.
Francis says:
Just an update, I have once again moved Internet providers, this time it’s Globe. I started the year with SkyBroadband, quickly gave that up because of the BS speed that they are marketing, they are like PAL, laging overbooked. I moved to PLDT MyDSL, stayed with them almost a year, unfortunately, I had frequent drop outs of connection, PLDT 172 were comprised of call center agents who don’t even know what they are doing, no help at all, they kept on with the ‘Press Start, the Control Panel’ pero I am using Linux, wala na silang matulong. To make a long story short, one technician nila finally admitted that the real problem was that my location was too far from the PLDT box (3KM) kaya patay na signal pag dating sa akin.
I am now using Globe, fortunately, for me the Globe box was just behind my house so ok ang signal. Another plus, was I was talking to the Globe technicians and asking them kung ilan ang nakakabit, ang sagot, ako pa lang, ok na ok. I subscribed to their (Php2,295 – 3MB/landline), I get 2.4-2.6MB, which they said I would get, so at least expected ko na iyon. So for now, I am happy with Globe Broadband connection. Sana nga lang mas mabilis, hindi pa rin kaya HD streaming.
BTW, for gamers latency of Globe is between 7-14ms, PLDT was 11-15ms (kung ayos). Latency not important for streaming, though.
keith says:
Hi all
after three years of being with “PLANET CABLE” there still is no increase in speed (2MBps), with the high cost of electricity here (one of the highest in the world) and PC (planet cable)ripping me off, they charge one of the highest cost for internet (3,000ph for just 2MBps+cable TV) and all the brown outs, some times several per day, it’s a wounder that there is any internet at all, I feel for the internet cafes here in the Philippines, and remember, the speed here is not constant, it is burst speed, just take a look in the task manager under network, and the grid there looks like a mountain range and not a smooth line as is usually the case in a lot of western countries, stability is something they not used to here.
Philippines is a beautiful country run by just 5 families who have crippled ” the pearl of Asia” the Filipino forgive and forget to easily, I would love to see Miriam Santiago run the country, now there is a woman who takes no shit from anyone.
The Philippines could be a fantastic country, if they could just get rid of the corruption.
Kevin says:
@patoga_ra
You’re a PITA in this thread. You don’t even know what you’re saying!
Patrick says:
Well, let me tell you my experience about Sky.
I currently have 4 mbps connection for 2000 peso, and until now, (about 3-4months) I’ve only have 1-2 Internet disconnections.
Now, I do agree with the Brit there saying that this place is way behind other countries. If I were to compare this country to Korea, then this country will be about 20-30 years behind. In a price about 2000 Peso, you can get a 100MBps download speed. (100 000 kilobytes per second)
What I want to ask these people in the broadband comapany is “Do you even have logics in your head?”
One reason is because, imagine, a company offers a FAST internet cnonnectio on a CHEAP price. What will happen? That company will dominate the internet industry within days. Not only that, but due to incredible amount of money coming in, they would be able to fix most of the problems being encountered from the users, increasing service, and with the remaining, money, they will be able to build up their technology and ACTUALLY make their OWN internet providers. (Reminder: PHilippines does not own any internet providers. They are getting it from (was it singapore or indonesia).

Eh ngyon pucha! 3 mins video on youtube sobrang tagal magload!
ronelm2000 says:
I guess I could put my comments in here.
Jumping fences will always be a risk in itself, so unless your speed is less than 60 kb/s, DO NOT change your ISP. With the sort-of crappy service of Globe Broadband I have, I still support it a bit. So…
Neither are good.
That’s the conclusion.
I say tolerance. or somebody make another Noli Me Tangere internet-style.
keith says:
Way to much red tape here, for other companies to compete, to much power for so few to control, the rich get richer, while the poor get poorer, can only hope one day, the internet speed matures enough to play online for an affordable price.
Would love to see 20MBps for the same price I’m paying for this ridiculous high cost for just 2MBps, and that’s still expensive for 20MBps, I can only hope and Pray ha ha ha ha, I will be waiting for ever.
All the best to all honest Filipinos, hope one day the people sort this corruption out with the power of vote.
Francis says:
Definitely agree with you regarding the deplorable aspect of service here in the Philippines. In the 80’s, it took 3 years to never to get a landline since PLDT was the only one providing, this changed when cellphones came, but back then to get a cellphone you have to wait 6 months and pay Php40K for the service, they kept it at this price range until SMART came along with their “affordable” price of around Php6K/month packages. Eventually, PLDT lost the landline business since most people would just use their cell for calls. The prices went down went down only recently when SUN gave their unlimited packages.
The same is true with the internet service, we just need somebody to break the monopoly and offer something faster at the same price. When people starting moving, the big boys will eventually start offering faster service.
I am sure PLDT, SkyCable, Globe, SUN know all the latest tech, I guess they are just in cahoots in the price level the industry is hovering on.
Kevin says:
@Keith
I cannot agree more on your testament. I’m a Filipino myself and lived here for the rest of my life (23 years). I’m a technology enthusiast and I see how the Internet service crawls here. Everyday I am envy to the Western part of the world on their technology considering how cheap they can get it. Triple play with fiber optic technology is very common nowadays with ISP’s in the US like Comcast. I really don’t understand why the Filipinos cannot do something with this important part of the industry.
keith says:
Hi all
I am British, sorry I don’t speak an awful lot of Tagalog, been in the Philippines for around 12 years, love the country, but it is run by too many corrupted officials, most of the people are great, but there are a lot of back stabbers in the country, been robbed many times, but they do have some of the most beautiful women in the world here.
Anyway, I get 2Mbps second for 3,000ph, that’s around 40 UK pounds a month, depending on the exchange rate of the day, and this includes cable TV, I am happy with the speed as I do usually get 2 MBps download, but the cost is way through the roof in-conjunction with the UK, for the same price I get 50+MBps, and free weekend calls, the speed here is so very laughable and so way behind the rest of the western world, in the UK, speed goes up every couple of months for the same price, but here in the Philippines, it has remained the same for the last couple of years with my account, the infrastructure is so bad, they still use copper wire in most locations, not sure if they have ever heard of Optical cables here, or just to bloody lazy to install them.
Things are starting to get faster, but god, you have to pay heavily for the bad service, they have along way to go, to even come close to the western world, they seem to be around 10 years behind, the tech is there, they just don’t want to give it to the general public, and they don’t like competitive companies starting up, they only just moved over to DVD movies a couple of years ago, the rest of the world is now using blu-ray movies, something that’s very hard to find here, then you pay though the nose to get it.
The Philippines is a beautiful country, but they are slowly destroying it from with-in.

I noticed that most people here says that 200-300 kbps is so slow. In fact, in my PLDT myDSL, that would be very fast already! Imagine the speeds of download I get on average is about 40 kbps. So you people must be really lucky to get that speed of 200.
Btw, my subscription is Plan 990 and I am from Pasig (up to 384 kbps)but I only get that measly 40. On Friday, I’m trying this Sky Broadband. I don’t mind if it’s not 12 Mbps, but if it tops PLDT’s effin’ 40 kbps then I’ll continue the subscription.

Quoted from Keith Rhodes,
“…we get 56 MBps for the same price I pay for a 3MBps connection here.”
Ahh yes! I can see your point! It’s like this —
A Philippine ISP bought a [56MBps Plan at 3000 Pesos per month] then retails it to ‘uninformed consumers’ at 1MBps = 1000 Pesos per month.
A Philippine ISP’s profit is:
Php56,000 = 1 MBps plan @ Php1,000 X(sold to)56 customers
-Php 3,000 = Cost for the Internet connection ‘Supply’
————-
Php 53,000 = Gross Profit per month!
No wonder why most Philippine ISP’s customer service departments are not serious about helping their customers is because -they do earn TOO MUCH MONEY- that it can cover their losses.
Keith Rhodes says:
Hi all.
I have been using Planet Cable, but I think it is in fact PLDT, at least they provide the bandwidth to Planet Cable, I was getting a really bad connection, but Kept on complaining, and demanding something be done, in the end they gave me the correct speed (3MBps) and now over the last 8 months, it is really stable and can at last play my favorite game on-line, Red Orchestra.
Don’t sit back and accept what they give you, they do this on purpose, like everything else in the Philippines, you really have to push for what you pay for, if you don’t, then they will walk all over you, don’t let them fob you off with lame excuses, I threatened them with court action, then they where only too willing to help.
I am not a Filipino, I am British, I always demand what I pay for, in the UK, we get 56 MBps for the same price I pay for a 3MBps connection here, the Philippines are way behind in technology, I hope soon they realize that 3MBps just isn’t fast enough for a true INTERNET experience.
All the best.
Keith.

What are the Differences Between DSL and Cable Internet?
This explains why Skybroadband -SUCKS-
Quote from http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-the-differences-between-dsl-and-cable-internet.htm
“An advantage of DSL service is that your speed remains the same, no matter how many people are using the service. With cable Internet service, the number of users in your local area can affect bandwidth availability and result in slow service. Your personal experience is >>–>dependent upon the number of active users at any given time<–<<."
So… during off-peak hours (2am~9am), mabilis talaga ang Skybroadband. Pero during semi-peak hours (9am~5pm) at peak hours (6pm~12?pm) TALAGANG MABAGAL.

Glad to know I’m not alone with this kind of problem. I live in the Pasig area and I’ve been suffering from the shitty service of Skybroadband for months already. The previous posters were right about giving you a promising connection during the trial period, but once you’ve hooked up with them, shit starts hitting the fan. It has made me quit playing mmo’s and games like hon and dota, though might be a good thing, but still deprives me of even watching a 3 min video in youtube. The only time I get a really decent connection is around 4am and there’s no way in hell I’ll adjust my time for the proper use of their service.
So this is the last straw for me and I’ll be switching back to PLDT and hope for a better ISP service.

Looking at the old replies I can see that my problem is not isolated. It seems Sky blocks off some sites during peak hours. The same sites can readily be accessed during off hours but never during peak hours.

I am subscribed to a 3mbps account with sky. For the past 1.5 weeks I have had a very slow connection. about 167kbps especially between the hours of 6pm to 12midnight. I have called them numerous times, and I have never been able to talk with the one who is supposed to be handling my account a certain JJ Mendiola. Absolutely nothing has been done about. These people are ripping me off!

all of you guys are using bayantel dsl where giving good feed back, but on my location at SM Fairview Novaliches QC my bayantel dsl connection has the worse connection now I’m on the IT industry and my work is always on the Internet and anytime I connect and browse the simple website that I needed to browse it takes 10 to 15 mins. to load up the content of the website.
last year 2009 the connection where good but this 2010 starting January the Internet started to slowdown until now the Internet is worsening.. every week we are calling the bayantel dsl support to fix the connection all they can say to wait because there are some downtime work are going on.. I’m on the IT for 13 years and I know how the network and software works and it only takes 5min to 1 hour to fix the problem and 1day is the maximum but not months or 3 months to fix the crappy connection.. I’m turning my bayanteldsl OFF I’m done with this provider I have lost lots of working hours everyday because of there bad Internet connection..
I know there are some location that provide good bayantel dsl that is if the port connection for that location is not over crowded..
is like one 512kbps internet port lan cable sharing or providing internet to a 500 users imagine if all these people are using Internet downloading and view youtube at the same time.. other Internet users will suffer on connection…
unless bayantel dsl add more or open more internet port to SM Fairview Brgy. Kaligayahan location to get the Internet speedup I’m not subscribing to them right now..
right now I’m looking at Wi-Tribe or WiMax globe or other reliable DSL Internet connection

Hey guys,
I’m planning to return to the Philippines early in July and will primarily be staying in Pasig City with some relatives. Since I’m only going to be there for 2-3 weeks and I’m the only one who even knows how to use the internet there, would it be a good idea to just try out Sky Broadband’s faster plans for their 15-day free trial then cancel the thing a few days before I leave the country?
The thing is, I only really need a fast connection for maybe 2-3 days in late July since that’s when I need to transfer large amounts of data to a personal server back home. What kind of upload speeds should I be expecting in this case? Or, if it’s really terrible, how much upload speed would I probably be looking at going to Megaupload as a trashy alternative?

so sa mga impressed with their free 15-day trial, don’t be surprised kapag once na nagbabayad na kayo ng libo libo for their service, you’ll get a buttload of crap with their “speed” and “service”. obviously it’s just to impress you guys to subscribe and commit to them for 2 years. don’t be fooled.

Customer service is also poor, they don’t have a 1 number hotline. I have to try all these different numbers hoping to get lucky that 1 will pick up.
I also used Smart Bro in Kapitolyo Pasig area and signal is usually consistent around 300 Kbps during peak, and 700 Kbps off peak. Hindi sya tumataas ng 800 Kbps kahit madaling araw. Upload speed is a bit slow. Customer service ok naman, not exceptional, just ok.
I’m currently trying the 15 days trial of Sky broadband 1 Mbps plan. So far so good, I’m happy with the trial. I experienced only 1 downtime so far. Umaabot ng 1.4 Mbps during off peak, then around 500 to 700 Kbps peak hours. So far customer service is good – they called me to follow up the installation as well as technicians were on time.
My only fear is that once I subscribed to Sky broadband… would the connection and service be consistent??? I’ve read the previous posts above and its quite scary…

After my comment last Dec 16, 2009, I have decided to move back to PLDT MyDSL, I just got the 512Kbps plan of theirs for Php 1,200/month, and I must say it is similar in speed with the 2mbps of SkyBroadband except it is basically consistent the whole day, wala nung mga mabilis sa umaga, mabagal sa gabi. I had a chance to make it go head to head with the SkyBroadband since they haven’t pulled out the cable modem even though I had it cut last Jan, 2010. Kaya, I can honestly say na pareho lang ang speed ng 512Kbps ng PLDT MyDSL sa 2mbps SkyBroadband, at least here in Alabang, mas mura pa ng 800 pesos.
Also, after some investigation, SkyBroadband is marketing a 2mbps and not 2Mbps speed, take note of the capital ‘M’ and lower case ‘m’, so do not be fooled. The difference, 2Mbps is 2 megabytes per second, and 2mbps is 2 megabits per second. 2mbps is roughly the same as 384Kbps or 384 Kilobytes per second, kaya halos mag kasing bilis ng PLDT MyDSL lang. You can check this out by tweaking the Settings in speedtest.net to reflect mbps, Mbps, Kbps, and kbps.
Having said all that, I just came from Singapore and nakakaingit ang kanilang internet, dahil ang bilis talaga. Sa Changi airport ang 512kbps na speed ay libre lang sa kanila.
Hay naku, Pilipinas, kailan ba tayo hahabol.

i switched to skycable broadband since the pldt dsl in my area sucks…specially when it rains. I had the 15-day trial and it worked well, of course i was wary if they indeed will live up to their promise of 1.5mbps when i get the regular subscription.
i got the regular subscription and it turned out well, it is a lot faster than my dsl and would get more than 1.5mbps in the morning, but come lunch time and early evening it would be slower but still faster than my old dsl.
every time I would try and download something from rapidshare or netupload it would always say that I am already downloading and will not allow me to do so. this means that I am sharing an IP address with the rest of the other subscribers.
I asked for a static address and so far i have not used it properly even if i have configured it already. Worst every morning for the past week i would have to switch first to dynamic IP then switch to static IP for me to use it. And the other thing is when the system is down and i don’t get a signal i would call their customer support and they would always say that there is nothing wrong and we can see your modem working. And as soon as I put the phone down the signal is back.
They have to provide a better solution to this service, I opted for their connection since I am already using their cable tv. They promised one thing but are delivering if at all another thing.
be aware of this and check your area first before subscribing to them. I am from Pasig/Manggahan area.

The only problem in SkyBroadband is that you can’t play online games. Atm, we’re having a connectivity problems(more likely to be a limited connection and massive lags) So yeah. I can’t play ALL of the games(just to tell you that all of our games are online.) and sometimes we experience lags and every after 2 or 3 hours, our connection will slow down and poof. It can’t detect the network thingy which leaves us to, yes, limited connection/no connection.

If you are living in Makati, I recommend you PLDT. Its still the most reliable and fastest(meaning, you dont need to worry about 1 week stupid problems). Although I use Globe in Ayala ( Not having any problem for almost 1 year), I think for gaming, PLDT is faster. If you want, you also could choose Globe, as it is “fine” for computer gaming.
Although Internet Cafes such as Station 168 uses different and strange internet ( I think it was eastern telecom or something), you might not want to get these cuz, as we all know, Highly Qualified Internet Cafe uses “expensive” internet providers.
So,, Here is your choice for Gaming:
Globe 2m or 3m (Check if its available
PLDT DSL Fastest one
And, I guess that it!
BUT NEVER USE SMART BRO!!! THEY SUCK SO BAD!!!!!

been complaining to sky cable about this issue for about 10days now and still counting. I recall this started about feb 2, 2010 a day before they texted us about having a maintenance. since then we were never able to have smooth internet connection. at times we will be disconnected and lasts for 30mins to hours. just last night we had no internet connection from 2am to 7am. i got tons of screen shots of pings and disconnections and when i sent them to the supportcenter, they said it was normal. LOL i even encircled the time outs that occurred proving their connection was intermittent and yet they said there was no problem. they said they were gonna send a technician and still he hasn’t arrived. I’m really fed up with this coz every month they have a new problem which lasts for weeks.

@Louie A : i wish i read your post before we signed up after the 15-day trial.
during the trial period, i already noticed inconsistencies but when it worked, it was really fast. then after signing up, all the problems came out. i can’t play online games, i can’t download torrents and sometimes i can’t even check mail. we’ve only had this internet for a month. everyday we had connection problems. i called and asked what the problem was and they told me that all sites that are secure or those that require logging in are affected. so basically it means i can’t check email or use sites like facebook properly. they did assure me that everyone else is experiencing the same problem. so i asked, what’s your time-frame on fixing this problem and the agent couldn’t answer. apparently, this is an indefinite problem and seeing the posts from way back march 2009 describing problems we’re still experiencing now, i’d say they’re not even doing anything to fix the problem. it’s frustrating that we’re not getting the 3Mbps that we signed up for. it’s a good thing we still haven’t disconnected our PLDT dsl. at least they’re honest enough to say that my speed is around 512kbps – 1.5Mbps and i get to do most of the activities i want to do (play, download, stream, check mail).
so if you’re just gonna use the net for surfing i guess you can make do with the inconsistency of sky broadband. but if you use the net like i do, i suggest you try other providers.

Louie A says:
BEWARE OF SKYBROADBAND 15 DAY TRIAL – ITS A TRAP
I’ve been using Globe Broadband for years and its basically stable. Had a few issues with it at times, but the issues were more with technical support being so hard to reach, and many times they don’t listen and treat the problem always as if the problem is with my computer set-up even when it is clearly a problem from their end.
But overall, when things are smooth, its good.
This January I decided to test the 15day free trial of SKYBROADBAND. I just tried the 1.5mbps plan and compared it to Globe’s 1mbps. I was amazed at the speed, it was clearly faster and cheaper. And during non-peak hours it would even reach up to 2.7mbps. My sister, who used to work with globelines warned me though that probably, things will be great during the test, but once you subscribe the nightmare would begin.
Boy, was she right. Just over a week after I subscribed, beginning Feb 2, I noticed that during peak hours, there is an immense difficulty to connect to most secure sites. Gmail, Yahoo mail, Yahoo Messenger, and many others. As long as you need to log on, you can’t connect during peak hours. If you can connect it takes many many tries and after long long waits, and then everything is unstable. IStarted calling Skybroadband’s customer service. I explained the problem but they claim nothing is wrong with their system. So we go through all sort of resets, checking configurations, adjusting ipconfig, etc and still the problem exists. They said they will send a technician in the morning. But by 1:30am, things normalized. In fairness, 9am the next morning, a technician came and when he found out what the problem was, he was surprised that the customer service guys didn’t tell me over the phone about that problem. In other words, its either the customer service people are clueless, or they are trying to trick their customers into believing there is no problem with their system.
Anyway, to make the long story short, it is now February 9 and the problem has been happening just about daily. And I have been calling their customer service daily to follow up. Each time I call, whoever answer is totally clueless. Their immediate response is that there is no problem with their system. But I have to explain over and over each time that I’ve been complaining for days. They would then put me on hold, call their system administrator, and when they get back to me they confirm that there is indeed a system problem and that I’m not the only one experiencing it.
After nearly a week I started asking about this problem with SKYBROADBAND in some forums and discovered the following.
Apparently to maintain the bandwidth during peak hours, SKYBROADBAND does something to BLOCK DOWNLOADING. I tested this and it is true. By peak hours, torrent downloading goes down to zero. Limewire reports that it lost the connection to the internet, even though the internet connection is alive and would still rate high on speed tests.
The other thing reported by others is that whatever Skybroadband does during peak hours affects secure sites, https sites. And its true, I’ve been experiencing it everyday. And when I commented about this on facebook, I found out many others were experiencing the same problems.
What’s the point of getting an allegedly fast internet connection if they disrupt your ability to log on to email, to connect to ym, and they prevent you from downloading?
Added to this is the terrible customer service of Skybroadband. They are clueless about what’s going on. I’ve complained everyday for a week, each day having to explain the whole problem over and over again. Plus, I have to counter their persistent pretending that there is no problem with their system. I hate it that they thing we are stupid and that they can convince us that the problem is with our set-up when it is clearly with them.
Also, you can’t even email their customer support as listed in their website, it just bounces back because the mailbox is full.
So, even though my account is barely a month old, I already told them I want to be disconnected by Feb 28 since I already paid until that date. They told me that there would be a disconnection fee of P350! I vehemently objected and told them I refuse to be penalized for their inability to provide adequate internet service. Besides, I never signed their contract. So, if they try to charge me that ridiculous fee, then it will be war.
SO BEWARE OF SKYBROADBAND!!! YOU WERE WARNED!!! THE 15 DAY TRIAL IS A TRAP.

Hey Yuga,
I’m using a destiny cabled internet. Its fast but of course this is just upto 2 Mbps. Very stable connection with at most 1-2 server down per month. though service is poor during evening but like I’ve said i only have 1-2 problem per month so basically you won’t need the support most of the time.
The catch with the and my primary reason for subscription is that I used the same cable wire to view destiny cable.. I just attached a splitter from the main cable and on line goes to the modem and the other one goes to the TV. So for P999/ mos I get cable TV and cable internet.
Something to think about for you!!

Hey guys I need your comments on Sky Broadband. Im planning to switch to a faster connection, not neccessarily a different ISP.
I currently have a connection with PLDT and its been great. I experienced only a moderate downtime a month after my first connection. That was 5 years ago. So until now I have no problem when it comes to service. Its just the speed that I want to improve.
I have, on average, 800kb download(Bandwith) and 400kb upload(Bandwith). Information gotten from speedtest.net
I want to try SKY broadband 12Mbps but I need some comments. Should I try the trial? It may just waste my time.
If you can suggest a better speed package that would be great. I am a SUPER HEAVY internet user. It takes days to finish what I download with
100kbps(speed).

When I first got it 5 years ago I experienced major downtime for a month. After that its been smooth sailing. I remember only 2 downtimes after thath.
Should I upgrade to a faster PLDT package or should I try Sky Broadband. Im into “major super heavy” internet. It takes a week to finish what I download with at most 100kbps(download speed).
Anyone connected to SKY Broadband, can you take the speedtest.com and pingtest.com and post it here?

@Lance – Seems like a good idea. Actually I am also thinking of getting another connection. As of now I have globe tattoo prepaid which is a very good back up when my connections at home and at the office are slow or worst no connection at all. Haay naku, mukang matatagalan pa yata bago bumilis connections dito sa atin.
Btw, I heard Liberty Telecom will soon launched its 4G broadband. How true is it?
Anybody in this thread who might have reliable informations kindly share it.
Thanks.

I’m using Globe broadband right now and I’m not happy with the services I’m getting most especially on their customer service. Kasi parang recorded message lang pag nakakausap ko CSR nila eh. Paulit ulit lang yung sinasabi kaya in short, wala ka magagawa kundi mag hintay kung kailan nila aayusin yung line mo. Kasi nung last time inabot ako ng 7 days. Lampas na sa pinromise nila na 24-72 hours. Na usually kasama sa script nila pag tumawag ka sa kanila.
Now I’m planning to get bayan Broadband. yung wireless na worth 799 ata yun or 699. Gawin ko sya backup just in case mwalan ang globe.
Ano sa tingin nyo? Tama ba ang move ko ? Kasi in terms of reliability, lahat naman ng network may possibility na mag down paminsan minsan eh.

We initially had Destiny cable’s ISP, it was very reliable and had a good customer After that earthquake in Taiwan about a couple of years ago it started to degenerate. Since I am always overseas and go home twice a year only, my sister in law was convince by a smartbro agent and got rid of the cable ISP, smartbro sucks after 3 to 4 months I decided to get rid of it, but they said I still have to pay the rest of the lockin period remaining months which is 8 months equivalent to 8K plus, I told them since I am not the one who permitted the installation and they did not live up to the service they advertised, I need it disconnected. They were looking for my sister in law but she already migrated to the US, so they are out of luck, good for them scammers. I got this myDSL now by PLDT and it seems Stable for the past 3 motnhs , but lately is becoming like the other ones, more down times, intermittent connections, are getting frequent and prolonged. Now I am thinking about switching to SKYbroadband but with all the bad reviews in this forum , I am having second thoughts. Can anybody advise me, who is not an agent of any of the ISPs, but a heavy internet user, since Iam one and do most of my works online. Many thanks in advance.

REMEMBER THE 80/80 RULE
80% of the publish speed at 80% constantly 24/7days a week/365 days a year.. example: 2.0 claim ads should give us 1.6mbps continous speed all the time with less than 1% downtime.
This is the unwritten acceptable norm de facto of other ISP outside the Philippines. If they have a minimum rule, we should demand it here in the Philippines also..
spread the word.. its time for us consumers to take action and complain to all these internet providers..

One sentence, and its been repeated many times in this blog.
SKY CABLE SUCKS!!!
today every hour i DC 5~10 times.
at a normal day you will surely get disconnected for at least 20 times.
and every gamer knows, that is so shitty!!
DL speed is not impressive as well,
it depends on the server of the site you are downloading on.
But BELIEVE ME, there are just few sites where you can download SATISFACTORILY. Most of the time u get speed 20~50% of wat u subscribed.
I live at QC and i think that our location is not that good for a sky broadband subscriber.
So if you live at QC DON’T SUBSCRIBED TO THIS SHITTY ISP!!!
FHM says:
I have just signed up with Sky Broadband when I moved to our new home. I was a long time user of PLDT DSL (now known as PLDT MyDSL), my plan early on was P3000 for 768kb/s at the time, and the speed was good and reliable. I converted it to the the Plan 999 and still got a reliable service and fast download/upload despite the lower 384kb/s downgrade. So I was excited to subscribe to Sky Broadband even though it was pricey.
My assessment, after 1 month of usage, Sky Broadband sucks, I have the 3mb/s plan for Php2000 and speed is slower than my Plan 999. It stops every day so I need to reboot everyday. It crawls at night. And Speedtest.net will report a download speed of 512kb/s and upload of 120 kb/s, the only way to get the 3mb/s speed if you connect your Speedtest.net to skybroadband.com.ph or bayantel server which is basically their server. Called up their customer service, and they will tell you that in order to get the speed you have to check it ONLY with skybroadband.com.ph which is pretty stupid considering that the internet is compose more than the Skycable server. Their explanation to slowness is because there are probably a lot of subscribers logged in, obvious ba. They have been advertising constantly, trying to get subscribers so therefore more subscribers logged in. Instead of coming up with solutions to solve the problem, the customer service agent just made excuses for themselves.
Am already considering of disposing Skybroadband and reverting back to DSL, at least, the speed advertised is closer to the actual. Skybroadband is a scam and falsely advertising their claim. They have to answer the “5x” faster the DSL claim they are saying, it’s actually “5x” divided by 10.
Ang mahal pa for the bad service.

We are subscribed to Sky Broadband plan 999 (w/ cable subscription) and below is my personal experience.
1. Availability: 9/10
Hands down the most up-time service compared to our previous ISP (PLDT myDSL). Maybe it has something to do with our location – near Sky Cable in SJ. I don’t know.
2. Casual browsing: 4/10
I only get to be home 6pm onwards, which I think is peak hours. The experience sucks. Somehow, it never fails to remind me how things were before we went DSL. :/
3. Reliability: 5/10
For reasons unknown, HTTP downloads seems to stop. This happens when I download some hundred MB file. The connection is not dead cuz I can still continue browsing. After a few seconds noticing the speed is 0kbps, I click stop/resume and it proceeds normally. Lucky me if it even resumes, cuz most of the time it restarts.
4. Torrent: 1/10
When we had a 1.5Mbps from PLDT, I can down a DVD size torrent within 24 hours. Now, it takes over a week. Although I notice a sudden burst of speed on rare occasions, it only lasts a few seconds. My speed never reaches 100Kbps. In the event it does, I concluded that another Sky user is also on the same torrent. :/
5. General service: 2/10
a. The agent who handled our account did not sign us up for 15-day trial, so when the technicians arrived, it was for the actual subscription already.
b. We were Sky Silver (from old Home Cable account), but was pretty much force to pay additional P100 MSF and the digibox. We declined and have since been under Select Starter plan for a few months now. According to a CSR, Select Starter are not considered Sky Cable subscribers so we don’t get MSF discount and our download speed peaks at 1Mbps under speedtest.net
c. We are now discontinuing our service, but we need to send a request letter along with some details along with the reason why we are discontinuing. So much hassle.
d. There’s a disconnection fee of P350.
e. The CSR said it’ll take 2-3 weeks for the modem deposit to be processed. :/
f. I paid P1000 to the tech for the 1st month advance, but they wrote P999 in the receipt and never got a credit.
That’s all. I’m sorry if it’s too long and more a rant than a good service review.

@Daniel:
I have already made all the right tweaks to my uTorrent (limiting download & upload speed, opening ports to make the light green), etc. but Sky Broadband’s maximum speed is still pathetic: 50-70kb/s on a well-seeded torrent. (The location of this connection is Bel-Air, Makati.) On the other hand, our Globe office connection (in Palanan, Makati) simply rocks, with download speeds of 220+ kb/s.
I’m thinking location plays a role. What’s your location? How about the rest of the posters here?
Rl says:
I don’t think there’s any major breakthrough internet infrastructure in the Philippines and I don’t think there will be any time soon at the rate we’re going.
I’m currently in the 12mbps (supposedly the pride and joy of SkyBroadband) 15 day trial, and amazingly my Globe 2mbps plan is still 2x faster. I called their support hotline and explained my issue to the arrogant agent, and guess what, he explained to me that these speeds can only be attained via local servers!!! (eg. if you perform speed tests with servers in metro manila).
If you actually get to access the international servers (which so happen to host ALMOST ALL of the websites we visit), then their 12mbps will be reduced to around 1.5mpbs -2mbps. What a complete JOKE
And to add, the agent can’t even give me a “minimum” speed. (eg. lowest possible speed that must be attained, or else it will already be considered an issue that must be reported). So you can’t really blame them if your speed goes down to around 1mbps (provided your in 6 or 12 mpbs plan) Unlike PLDT or Globe, which will assure a 70% constant speed.
In summary, the lower plans might work for some of you, but given the marketing lies and the arrogance of their customer service agents I won’t even think of considering to pursue their service.
Too bad, I would have really wanted a REAL 12mpbs connection.
Michael says:
I have tried PLDT 2MB, Bayantel 2MB and sky 3MB.
The 3 packages have almost the same price.
Sky is quite more stable where I’m living. The service is stable and up most of the time.
About the shared broadband thing between DSL and cable, I experienced more that issue with Bayantel and not with sky. After I agree on peak hours I can feel the global load, but who doesn’t.
What you have to keep in mind, because of the poor peering partnership of the telco companies here, access international website always sucks.
I still download content at an average of 2.5MB with a download accelerator and 1+MB with torrent depending on the seeds.
The most complain I have is the upload which sucks for all telco here.
We’re far from the 20MB/1MB usual and cheap in Europe. They’re starting to switch for residential optical fibers …. so maybe in 10y in PH lol

Daniel says:
and the are supposed to be “NOT”
Daniel says:
Okay okay okay…
I’ve read almost all of the comments here and will confirm some facts, based on experience:
1.) Day-time (or PEAK HOURS) will offer you anywhere from 40 – 75% of your DOWN/UP speeds
2.) ONLINE GAMING:
Garena Room affiliation shifts from BAYANTEL to PLDT rooms every 3-4 months or so.
No problem in accessing INTERNATIONAL SERVERS
VERY STABLE CONNECTION: Up time is @ 97% for me. NO DISCONNECTS due to connection stability. The 3% disconnects is due to ANNOUNCED downtimes or some other ISPs ineptly messing around with the cables/connections in my building.
3.) TORRENTS
Off hour connections may overclock your subscription speed.
Sometimes, I go upto 250 KB/s as opposed to the supposed “max” speed 187.5 KB/s for my 1.5mbps connection.
Slow torrent speeds is due to either your UPLOAD SPEED is TOO HIGH or SWARM SPEED is SLOW. Either way, it’s on the fault of the settings of your torrent program.
TORRENT PROGRAMS ARE NOT NATIVE PROGRAMS THAT “ADAPTS” ITSELF TO YOUR SETTINGS. AND SINCE SKY BROADBAND IS A CABLE INTERNET <> A DSL (DIRECT SERVICE LINE), YOU NEED TO TWEAK YOUR TORRENT PROGRAM ACCORDINGLY…
Besides, there is NO INTERNET SERVICE in the world that GIVES the FULL QUOTED CONNECTION SPEED, especially during PEAK HOURS.
4.) Downloading from Megaupload/Rapideshare/etc.
Forget about it. 95% of the time, it will tell you that your IP is being used by someone else. This is due to the fact that your IP is NOT UNIQUE TO YOURSELF and is being used by MOST ALL THE SUBSCRIBERS IN YOUR AREA.
I am not sure if it’s the whole region/country, but all I know is it’s not uniquely yours.
5.) ROUTERS/WIRELESS
WILL <> WORK UNLESS YOU CALL YOUR TECH SUPPORT AND ASK THEM ABOUT YOUR:
STATIC IP ADDRESS
including: NETWORK MASK & GATEWAY
ALSO, YOU MAY NEED TO SET UP A SPECIAL SETTING SO THAT YOUR ROUTER and MODEM CAN COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER THROUGH THEIR MAC ADDRESSES
—————————–
Basically, most of the problems about SKY Broadband STEMS FROM THE FACT THAT
IT IS CABLE INTERNET
WHEREIN, YOU DO NOT GET:
1.) PPPoE … thereby you don’t get ->
2.) Unique IP
If you don’t know the jargon… well, google it…
I myself have had no MAJOR problems with Sky and will continue with their service in the future.
OH, BTW… Globe sucks, PERIOD.

SKY broadband 3, 6 and 12 mbps. Downloads are allot faster than pldt but if you plan to use it for gaming it REALLY sucks. It seems every minuite or so there is a split second disconnection. On some games this ejects you entirely from the game on others it puts you in a massive lag spike. (we are talking MMOS here) and it seems like sat sun all day has horrible internet. Week days 3am-2pm is ok … not great but ok. any other times it is horrible. and there is no noticeable difference in gaming between the 3 6 and 12 mbps. And 100 usd for 12mbps? are they crazy? i dont care what kind of freebies they give you, on Guam ( uses same servers in china that Sky does i was getting basic cable 100mbps internet for 35 usd a month.

i’ve been on pldt mydsl for a few years already. at first i’ve been having disconnections and downtimes alot. even had experienced poor services from them as i reported my probs b4. imagine. like last year, the worst i had with them. my prob started on september and made the call to them right away. they said that they’ll had someone go here at our place to check on it. because we had already established that there is a big prob on my connection through the tests we had on phone.they didn’t showed up so i called them weeks and weeks later. november came and finally a tech went here even replaced my modem. first it worked but connection was poor, i am on plan 999 and i only get 200+ kbps connection, so thats about 20-30 kbps max download speeds even on the best sources of downloads on the net. and they said that its because you’ll only get a percentage of what you paid for. and a few days later downtimes, disconnections came. still the entire happened again, until april may this year. maybe a good tech came and finally he fixed everything. and until now i’m not experiencing anything bad about my dsl. i dunno if the techs b4 are just stupid or they just don’t like working at all. they suck! but thanks a lot to that last tech guy we had. i wished i got his personal number so he’ll be the one i’ll call when i have probs in the future. well, all in all, i dunno whats wrong with pldt. if it is the company itself, or they just have poor service people. i hope i won’t go back having same probs b4 coz honestly isp’s here suck. i’ve been thinking of changing to skybroadband in case my probs with pldt go back, but i only get poor feedback from people around the net who have tried it. so pls give more of your feedbacks and comparisons on skybroad, and other isp’s here. hope we can all find the best one finally. hehe

just a tip when you are doing speedtest of your isp using speedtest.net… –dont test against servers here in phil. (skydsl.com.ph, skybroadband.com.ph, pldt.com.ph) because most of the sites wasn’t hosted here in the phil, meaning if you gonna browse facebook or play games like World of warcraft,ur packet needs to travel across the world not just in Phil. So here’s the real deal, test ur ISP (bayanteldsl, skybroadband or pldtdsl) against US servers, and you’ll see results they were pretty much close.

Dude, every DAMN Internet service here in the Philippines is SHARED, may it be DSL or Cable Internet! Because their backbone is always shared.
Never compare DSL and Cable Internet speeds in the Philippines since the speeds still rely on how the network of each ISP is set up.
To Sky Broadband 12Mbps users, what modem are you using? Is it the Motorola Sb5101 also?
Jay says:
I guess what everybody has forgotten already is that the fact that cable internet (Sky Broadband) is basically a shared broadband internet access. Unlike DSL, which will not be affected by the volume of users at a particular time, cable internet will deteriorate when there are too many users at the same time.
US tech articles have been discussing this advantage and disadvantage of cable internet since 1999, and they still think that DSL is best for high-density areas. Cable internet is good, provided that there is a good balance between capacity and user volume.
I guess that’s the reason why Smart BRO sucks as well… It’s also a shared connection. Our service deteriorated after 4 years. But instead of replacing the transmitter, they simply pointed it at another cell site, because the current cell site has 70 users according to them. Since Sky Broadband has the same concept, I’ll just stick to Smart BRO na lang.
I guess that’s why Sky Broadband service may suck for some people.

I was on myDestiny internet for almost 5 years and every year it seems to be getting slower and slower so finally I decided to change to skybroadband, especially after taking the 15-day trial. I still haven’t disconnected our Destiny internet because I wanted to compare the two.
It is really alot faster than Destiny when it comes to browsing, and the speed is consistent (as the hundreds of speedtests i’ve been doing indicated). Everyone in my house is happy when they’re surfing the web and have commented that Sky is the better internet provider. (I live in Alabang Hills)
However, when it comes to the downloading of torrents, Sky really SUCKS! I tested downloading the same file from the same site with two computers, one on Destiny and the other on Sky and the results were very annoying — Destiny’s speeds were 5x faster than Sky’s! (100 KB/s vs. 20 KB/s). But if you do a speedtest, Sky is clearly the faster service (1.5mbps vs 300 kbps for Destiny).
So I guess this means that Sky themselves must be choking the download speeds somehow. Which is terribly unfair and downright wrong — nowhere in their service agreement does it say they can do that. I’ve complained 4 times now since getting the service 2 weeks ago and so far nothing has happened. Obviously I would like to only subscribe to one provider, but both are definitely flawed and it’s just so frustrating.

Extremely Disappointed Sky Subscriber says:
We’re currently using the 3mbps service of Sky Broadband, which I believe – despite the aggressive marketing on Sky’s part and the supposed higher speeds -, is a huge step down from the ZPDEE days.
I agree with a previous poster here that ZPDEE “was” fairly reliable, especially relative to other ISP’s here in the Philippines. Service was also good with onsite teams coming at a few days’ notice (sometimes even within the same day as the complaint).
I’ve been living abroad for a while now and I come home for long stretches twice a year. I’ve noticed in that span of time that with this Sky Broadband transition crept in ridiculously unreliable service and worthless customer support that were all hallmarks of typical local ISP’s which we sought to avoid by subscribing to ZPDEE in the first place. Simply put, despite the boasted “burst speeds” of this new marketing campaign, it really is a backwards step in overall service delivery.
First of all, I never get anything close to the 3mpbs download speed except during the wee hours of the morning. During the rest of the day, it lingers at around 1 to 1.5mbps, sometimes even less. Customer service reps are now absolutely inept, and all they will tell you when you call is that they will “endorse” (I’ve come to hate this Sky jargon) your plea to the proper department. Nobody knows how to do anything, nobody takes accountability for anything, and like another previous poster mentioned, “papaikutin ka nang parang bola.” That’s all the 631-0000 hotline is good for. All the reps are either lazy, helpless, or just plain stupid. What’s worse is that they lie, insulting the customer’s intelligence.
We’re part of this “prestige club” that SkyCable claims is its way of prioritizing loyal customers. Supposedly, we get 24/7 service with our personal account manager (they gave us her direct contact number). Now I don’t think our account manager even exists, as she never picks up, and her co-workers (and even her supervisor) keep on telling me different alibis regarding her failure to deal with us. One time I called, a guy said that she had just stepped out of the office. When I called moments later, a woman said that she had been on leave for quite some time already… It’s downright shameful that they can’t even coordinate their deceit. That’s how inept they are. Reps literally pull shit out of their asses just to close any unresolved issue…
I’m not an idiot when it comes to computers, and I’ve isolated the problem to either the cable modem or Sky’s signal. When connected to the modem directly, each of our 3 PC’s and 2 laptops still has no internet. Every time I called, the only thing each rep could say is to go to ipconfig and /release /renew. They’d explain it to you as if you were an idiot and it was the only way a network problem could be solved. A “prestige club” rep kept on insisting that the problem was with our hardware. I told him: “Are you suggesting that our 5 computers’ ethernet cards all broke down at the same time?” He was quick and defensive to say “no,” but he still insisted that our computers were to blame and was reluctant to file a report for an onsite team to come until I literally threatened to end our subscription. The even dumber part was that he was initially willing to send a team the next day to end our connection, but did not want to send one to at least check up on our modem… I’ve never been this disappointed with Sky.
All this comes on top of the fact that customer reps have promised for the past two days that a crew team will be sent each following morning. The first day, our subdivision/village guard post gave us a call saying that some SkyCable people wanted to come in. We told the guard to let them enter while we waited, but throughout the rest of the day, not a single SkyCable person rang our doorbell. I called Sky to ask what was going on, and they said that the job was already done. What the hell?! I didn’t even see them. Worst of all, my internet was still dead. And ang bastos nila! After using our name to get in and making us wait, they didn’t even have the courtesy to show up at our place. They probably just checked on some cable at some random street. After venting my frustration, Sky promised to send them again the next day but this time around, we were completely stood up. I never experienced anything like this with the old ZPDEE. Sky Broadband is now just like any other unreliable ISP… “Supposed” higher speeds mean squat if management and customer service are severely downgraded… not to mention these speeds aren’t even really attainable because of bandwidth issues, and our internet has been dying for long stretches of time to begin with.
Oh, and then there’s this other issue of Sky over-billing us for the past few years while I was away (my parents don’t really understand the specifics of these internet packages and just take it as it is). I found out about it and asked for a rebate. A “prestige club” rep told me she would call to update me in a few days. Three weeks passed and she didn’t call. I called the hotline and yelled at the people to transfer me to her and she just ended up pulling more shit our of her ass to cover for herself.
I’m just so frustrated and disappointed with what Sky has become… Sumsakit puso ko at na-ha-high blood ako rito. I can’t get any decent work done from home – not even check my email and respond to more urgent, consequence-bearing issues. I would never recommend Sky Broadband to a friend. My problem now is that there seem to be no good substitutes around anyway. This only feeds into the complacency that all ISP’s already display in unhealthy doses. Any suggestions for an alternative ISP? We live in QC near ADMU and UP Diliman… I’m just so sick of this, and I wanted to share my more recent experiences with Sky Broadband, even at length, just so people get another long-time user’s perspective and thus a clearer picture of how bad they’ve become.
Good luck looking for good ISP’s! Really. Our country deserves better than these crap conglomerates.

The technical and support crew can’t seem to do anything about it (just promises na tututukan daw nila), even if they’ve confessed that the problems are on their end. And i’m getting the runaround about rebates i’m asking for! (Why should i pay for the two months i had no internet connection at all!) Yes it is!! ive already confirmed it, i made a “tracert” to a singapore IP add, and u will see, after going to sky add, u will be redirected to eastern telecom connections, and then eastern telecom connections, connects from Japan server. before you go to any website…
so this will happens, when you go to any website,
e.g. http://www.google.com
Home IP add >> Sky Server >> Eastern Telecoms >> japan Server >> google.com
basically, sky is good for surfing and downloading, but its not good for Gamers like me..
Ive tried skybroadband, but when i discoverd this, i opted to disconnect, as it not good for online gaming…

I wonder if the problem regarding torrents really is from SkyBroadband. Because there are some routers with firewalls that prevent transfer of data. One way to fix this is manually set up your router to allow the transfer. This process if called “port forwarding”. The website portforward.com offers a detailed guide on how to set up your router.

We’ve had Globe Broadband for the past 3 months and although it has great speed and reliability in our area, the modem itself could not connect to ANY router we stick into it. We have 4 pc’s at home as this functions as a homebased office and we badly need a router. What’s worse, we called their CS and they a 15 year old sounding guy sheepishly informed us that they DO NOT SUPPORT technical problems with connecting routers, only with connecting their modems.
We removed our modem and stuck the phoneline into a ProLink modem/router and all goes fine except that the modem/router is very picky with the websites it can access even if we alter our firewalls/proxies. What’s more, YouTube stops downloading 10% into the file meaning for a 10 minute video, we could only watch 1 min of it and then boom, it stops.
SkyBroadband came today with our 15-day tril and I tell you the 1st 2 hours was great. I could open my Central Desktop and we have a router connected so all pc’s have the same internet connection. I went to sleep and when I came back online at 10pm, I find out that downloading ANYTHING from ftp’s or torrents are 90%impossible. For a CrazyKart download that took me 45 mins with globe, its taking me 4-10 hourse depending on the really shifty file transfer speed ranging from 200kbps-20kbps or lower. Grrr. This is not what we signed up for!
We’re looking for reliability, not just speed as we do work from home and internet connection with our clients is a must.
We are in Pasig area.
Hope this doesn’t go on for the rest of the trial. This is baaaad for a 1st impression.

I have bayandsl for over some years now and mydestiny cable as a backup…
Bayandsl is ok…but the capacity here in the philippines of the backbones…so the connection to the internet is just too low.
As most websites are hosted in the US and not in PH we all make huge traffic from lets say 6 PM till 11 PM when the internet cafe’s closes. (some)
Then the speed goes up again.
So no matter what connection you have, it comes to the capacity of the network and that still needs to be improved to handle these kind of speeds.
Sure it will be faster on specific times, but dont expect it always.

My torrents are working well, also have a US number coz it comes with a sky voice plan 100, though i dont have any1 to call in the US :)
All in all compare to my ISp before which is smartbro and globetelecom, its still better coz of the higher download speed it manage to offer, havent experience downtime yet,(with globe i never did too, for 1 year or maybe i just havent noticed it coz i dont go online all the time)
For me its worth a try. specially if you have the 15 day free trial
Mika says:
Just to finish :)
Why microsoft or google are fast and not the others ?
Those are using CDN (Content delivery networks) like akamai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_Delivery_Network)
It makes simply their content available closer to the end users, reducing latency and improving the speed.
So more far the content it is, less u’re lucky if you’re in PH :)
Mika says:
12mb sounds like appealing, it could be a great jump fwd for users here.
But …
There’s always a but :)
12mb to their facility is nice but after what do we do ?
No telco provider can guaranty you to reach your speed outside PH.
Make the test with speed.net and you will understand what i’m talking about.
Local Telco providers, even the biggest, still have poor peering (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peering) and only focus locally.
That’s explain you will have an hard time to take advantage of ur 12mb :)
So far only business lines are really providing an acceptable quality outside the country but nobody can affort those.

@Pierre
May I ask what improvements will NGN give? Because the PLDT tech that went here said that they would probably finish installing NGN’s in our area by Q3 or Q4 this year. And if I’m right, NGN stands for Next Generation Networking?
Pierre says:
Do not get fooled (like I did), Sky Broadband is the pit. My 15 days trial went very well, I confirmed and BANG, torrents started getting totally sluggish. Then I started getting private IP on my modem and no Internet at all at night: “scheduled maintenance” they said on the phone. It happens many times. I had to keep my PLDT DSL as a backup for my VoIP phone.
1) Reliability: horrible
2) Speed: good if you donwload from microsoft.com or ibm.com. P2P is horrendous
Bottom line, if your area is on NGN for PLDT, then go there.

Shh… My neighbor here in Ayala Alabang has Sky Broadband 6mbps. The network is not secured so I was able to connect :).
I’m trying to download torrents but it seems that torrents are not working. I’m guessing that Sky Broadband has blocked Torrent trackers, or that my neighbor has blocked it. But if my neighbor isn’t knowledgeable enough to secure his/her network, then I don’t think he/she will know how to block ports and IPs.
I’m not really sure, but if Torrents are blocked in Sky Broadband, then I see no use on subscribing to it.

Maybe I’ll just stick to PLDT until a good ISP comes out.
And just a tip to those who are complaining about Sky Broadband. Maybe you should go take legal actions against them. I mean, you’re not getting what you paid for right? And still, they advertise these kind of speeds and yet, its not even the average speed. That’s called FALSE ADVERTISING.
Its like what happened to Comcast. Although its kind of different because Comcast was saying that they give unlimited internet connection but the reality is that they are limiting the bandwidth of their users. And their subscribers filed a class suit against them.

I was a loyal PLDT subscriber. For 5 years, we never gave a second thought on switching ISP’s. But now, I am starting to get disappointed with PLDT’s DSL.
Usually, my internet downspeed would hit around @ 2 Mbps off-peak and around 1 Mbps during peak hours and my upspeed would hit around 600 Kbps (off-peak) and around 500 kbps during peak hours. But then one day, my Downspeed suddenly dropped to 380-420 Kbps and my Upspeed to 55-57 Kbps (that’s ridiculously low!).
I tried calling them for support. They made me do things like speed tests and tracert, but they were unable to solve the problem. The customer support guy said that he would report it to their techs can fix it from there and would send one if they can’t. Then, the day after, a tech guy came. Unfortunately, he was still unable to fix the problem and he told me that it was probably due to the number of subscribers in the area. I thought it was ridiculous. I mean, look at my UpSpeed! It shouldn’t be like that!
Now I’m looking for better ISP’s out there and I was researching about Sky Broadband. For now, they look good on paper. But there are alot of negative reviews out there about SkyBroadband. Ofcourse, I’ll try the trial first.
BOTTOM LINE:
If all else goes wrong with the 15 Day Trial. What other ISP’s do you recommend? I’m in the Makati area.

we used to have SKY Cable, then shifted to Destiny… then when a package of ZPDee + SKY was offered a few years back, we tried out their broadband, and super reliable. Siguro in the years we’ve had it, we’ve had only a few major outages a year that lasted more than 10 min (other times it was simply a matter of unplugging and replugging the cable modem).
our speeds were also upgraded without us being advised, from 384 to 512 to 1mbps, and now that they’ve transitioned to sky broadband we now have 1.5mbps.
no problem so far, but there was a major outage for a few days – turns out our old reliable cable modem (which came from the zpdee days) died on us. the new modem is a lot smaller, but i’ve started noticing some small 5 minute outages at random times of the day.
overall though, given the horror stories i’ve heard from officemates and friends regarding their DSL connections, i’d recommend sky in a flash :)

Hi,
I have been a Sky Broadband subscriber since November of last year (2008). I’m on the 3Mbps subscription (P1,999/month). And like others here, the 15-day trial went more than well. It was great. I’m a gamer on my week offs and connecting and playing in the Playstation Network was superb. UNTIL of course giving them my confirmation to subscribe at the end of trial! I’ve had downtimes almost 3x a week. They’ve changed my modem 4x already, and worst, checking on my speed (download and up), I get as much as 1.5-2Mbps (uploads at 200-250kbps, i was told it should be at least 512kbps).
Now I couldn’t even get a decent game session on the PS Network. I live in San Juan, right behind the Sky Cable HQ here. So that tells a lot on the distance factor (from HQ) eh.. So it has to be the many subscribers (which have grown because of the promo trial) who’ve been hoodwinged like me.
Now letting this service go, compels me to pay a pre-termination fee of P2,000. Sucks.

Frequently nagtotopak yung internet on weird times of the day (2PM to 6PM weekday) but on weekends, okay naman. I hope that due to the influx of fence jumpers, our beloved Zpdee won’t be just another PLDT/Bayan/Globe story ( Increase in subscribers, Decrease in performance/service )

For the past week, Bayantel DSL has given me the headache and eyebags for staying up till 3 am trying to connect to the internet. My plan is the 2699, 2.5 mbps. Like clockwork, the connection is great at daytime, but at 6 pm all through the night, the connection is sooooo sloooow. Bayantel has been telling me to reset, disconnect the router and the changed the modem, too but to no avail. So today, I’m switching to Sky broadband and after reading all the comments here, I do so holding my breath and praying that I would not experience the sob stories you shared here.
Sky TV Online says:
Sky broadband – Internet users can surf the web at incredible speeds while enjoying the low pricing Sky deals deliver. Sky broadband comes with its own wireless router. Sky deals for broadband range from limited access to fully unlimited packages that allow for surfing, e-mailing and playing around the clock.

zpdee has been very reliable for me. i was upgraded from 512kbps to 1.5mbps last november for the same MSF. download speeds at 1.5+ mbps always. unfortunately lately my connections has been down for 1 week now. naaayos naman kaya lang pagkaalis na pagkaalis ng service people nila, wala na naman. may amo!!!
ok naman sya for months noong zpdee pa sya.

i’ve been with PLDT myDSL for almost a year now and i haven’t experienced any downtime at all. the only time i lost connection was when the PLDT guys were outside my house switching my connection to fiber optic dsl which was not a problem, of course.
i’ve been thinking about switching to sky broadband when my contract expires but my officemate, who’s with sky, told me not to switch because she’s having bad expriences with her connection most of the time. so i’m having second thoughts about it.
i just hope that by the time my contract expires, PLDT will have better deals for the same plan.
jasper says:
brutally speaking, there’s no assurance that SKY will give the best services.
we can call them, unreliable. sorry, but im really experiencing shit-things… even if i havent got a sky broadband.
sana lang maaus tong broadband na to, para mabawi ko ung mga nasabi ko. hmp! nakaka high-blood

to jillian –> I’m also scheduled for installation of sky broadband. and until now, they are not here yet..
its almost 4pm.. f*ck! they’re making me dissapointed.
actually, January 2 was the scheduled date for the installation.. but there are tech prob that’s why the schedule has been moved to this day..
I hope they’ll give me great connection, or else… they will recieve bad critic.. by any means..
jillian says:
^zoilo, from what area are you from? i’m from makati and currently subscribed to smart bro. i’ve been experiencing hell connections with it since october, and i believe it can’t be fixed anymore, with download speed only averaging 200kbps :(
my scheduled installation should be today, but unfortunately they’re not here yet. i hope the 15-day trial will contribute to a good judgment on whether we’ll subscribe or not.
zoilo caparros says:
We’ve been using SkyBroadband for almost a month already. Unfortunately, the 1st 15 days free trial was great. we’ve been getting good Mbps BUT when we confirmed that we’ll continue with the subscription, that’s when we frequently get “NO” Connection. We always call their customer service and they keep on telling us that there’s no problem with the system based on their analysis. They even sent their field technicians (twice already)to check on our modem, wirings etc. and they keep on telling us that they have fixed the prob. BUT to our dismay the connection problems will resume right after they left. We’ve been experiencing almost 2 straight weeks already and it really pisses us ‘coz we can’t do our tasks.
I’m just letting you guys know that we’re not at all satisfied with SkyBroadband and i wished that I didn’t disconnect our SmartBro. I will just assume that our prob. is just an isolated case. I’m just posting this just to share my opinion. So if you are planning on getting the services of Sky, think again..

Guys, I cant wait for the installation of this sky broadband!..
i called already the skybroadband center, and they will install the product on january 2.
anyways, here is my comments on all ISP i have used.
GLOBE AXESTELL – this is a shit. connection flactuates oftenly! i cant play online games even if i my PC has high-specs
GLOBE ZTE (3g) – this is better than AXESTELL. good for browsing and downloading small files. my only concern is, what if i want to surf internet during THUNDERSTORM???? this modem is not applicable during thunderstorm.. so dont use this during 3rd quarter of the year! hahaha
SMARTBRO – when it comes to consistency, this is what i am recommending.. this doesnt flactuates..
so far, SMARTBRO still leading the race among the connection i’ve used.
but as i mentioned, i’ll be using SKY BROADBAND soon. so, i am hoping that i did a good choice.
does SKYBROADBAND gives atleast 75% of its offered speed? please do reply,, :)

I’m somewhat confused now. I don’t know what to get. I’ve been using smartbro for the past 2years, and I want out. The connection sucks. I don’t know why my mom still thinks the connection is okay even though we’ve been calling Smart for how many times this year because of complications with their server. Anyway, would anybody help me? Which is better, PLDT mydsl or SKY broadband? I’m from Quezon City and i don’t know which is better with my location. Pls help me! :) Thanks in advance.

Hi there. I recommended Skycable Broadband to my girlfriend and they’ve been using it for about 3 months now. She was previously using the succckkky SMART bro. She’s using the 900+ 1.5mb plan of skybroadband that also has a 15% discount on cable tv. She lives in merville, Paranaque.
So far, we would recommend switching to Skycable Broadband if you’re using SmartBRO. SmartBRO service sucked. Everytime the internet was down, you’d call them, and they would answer after 30-60 mins, then go through the procedure and ask you to call back after 6 hours, wherein, when you would call back you’d have to wait another 30-60 mins. My girlfriend can actually work for them already because she already memorized the SMART process of resetting the modem, ping this, ping that. hahah.
WIth skycable broadband, so far internet has never been down. And whenever we call skycable (for inquiries, since we’ve never had problem with the internet), they do answer immediately, as for the response time with their service, im not so sure yet, but if I can just base it on the time it takes you to get connected to their customer representative, then I think skycable outperforms SmartBRO.
I would also recommend BayantelDSL, never had a problem with them with the 4 years i’ve been with them (in Quezon City), I have the 2.5 mbps but its a bit pricey though at P2,700 (comes with a line though). Service is great, they come quickly, and provide a refund if there is downtime with the internet for how many hours.
Im actually thinking of switching to skycable broadband because their 3.0mbps plan is actually 800 pesos cheaper then my 2.5 mbps plan with bayantel. But i still have like 7-8 months with my contract with them. Maybe next year. But overall, I have no complaints with BayanDSL and there are no complications with SKYbroadband. Speed is consistent because I regularly perform a speedtest to check if the Speed of the internet is the same as advertised.
dont Get SMARTbro. for love of your life. It will be a hassle.
Btw, we tried the 15 day promo for skybroadband, No hitches, no catch, and had no problems.
As for BayanDSL, the 15 day promo is okay too. No hitches. No Catch.
For ROyce (the ping on 203.116.28.6):
10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 62.019/67.081/83.309/6.888 ms
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND SKYBROADBAND and BAYANDSL.

ZPDee (cable internet) is now Sky Broadband… joining Sky’s Cable TV & VoIP infrastructure at a lower now at lower monthly rates compared when it was still ZPDee.
Their highest offerings, 6mbps & 12mbps are bundles (including Sky Cable TV GOLD & VoIP Plan 100 to US/Canada)…
Most Internet shops will likely stick to DSL Internet because it uses phonelines (which is bundled to phonelines plans) but some can afford to take the 6mbps & 12mbps packages without minding the bundles just to let them be on top of the competition.
Reliability & Support are the main concerns however, but maybe those previous ZPDee subscribers can tell about those so far.
It’s a good thing they offer a 15-day trial and I will consider dialling that number they gave… luckily my area is covered by their umbrella.

My location is Bonifacio Global City. I’m on the 2nd week of my 15-day free trial of the 1.5 mbps Sky Broadband package. My trial was supposed to have started in October; they came and connected the modem but it couldn’t connect to the network. As I was going out of town, I had them come back in November.
They came back on Nov. 3 and the connection worked. The first week was a dream: really fast speeds. But twice this week already, the modem has been unable (again) to connect to the network. Sky says that the modem says it can’t detect any PC connected to it, which is incomprehensible because the PC light on the modem is on. The problem each time: the Receive light never lights up, and my network connection shows “Limited or no connectivity.”
Interestingly, a friend of mine located in Bel-Air, Makati, seems to be having the exact same problem. Good thing she and I still have our respective DSL connections.
Conclusion: I will not be continuing with Sky after the 15-days. Good luck to the rest of you who will be trying it out.

Abe, yung 15 days trial are for SkyCable subscriberonly :)

Hi,
we used to be zpdee subscribers, until skybroadband gobbled zpdee up.. what i could say about zpdee is that their speed is very reliable we always get our subscribed 1mbps 24/7 (coz i do random speed tests from time to time).. and less downtime..
hmm with sky broadband.. it’s another issue, we were recently upgraded to the 3mbps, but i noticed that when i do speed tests during the afternoon speeds clocked were around 768kbps download.. then when i do the same thing at around 1am speeds are at the 3mbps range..
any reason why this happens? could it be the number of users in an area?
i hope they can give the 3mbps speed 24/7 like the way zpdee did with their 1mbps..
thanks!

Hey jhay, i think Eastern Communications has facilities in Cavite area.
Try to call 3001607 for more details.
vance says:
1mbps of upload speed for the higher plans are enough. for the lower plans it needs to be increase.
I know that Mydestiny cable is not that good hehe.. so hopefuly this other cable internet provider ca be much better. skybroadband is used to be called ZPDee, so i heard good reviews about zpdee but as with other all internet connection here in the philippines there are some bad experiences too.
Chris B says:
6mbps for 3,999 sounds like a totally good deal. but yuga is right, it would depend on the reliability with Sky. PLDT with me right now has been pretty stable and the speed has been increasing bit by bit. but there would be a few times in a year that the connection would disappear. and, IMO, customer service sucks.
if anyone can give a good feedback on Sky, i would switch to it in a snap. i just hope they have options to up the upload speed though and it would be a perfect deal.
Patrick says:
The reason why I chose BayanDSL over the others was because I thought that they had fewer subscribers. Seeing you guys tell here that you’re also with bayan makes me think I was wrong. :P
Oh well.. my cousin who’s my neighbor is with PLDT. She’s not a heavy internet user like me though.
vance says:
@andre that is why they put in the package “up to” a certain speed, not “exactly” the speed. hehe.
Andre Marcelo-Tanner says:
the question is how sustained are those speeds, maybe those are burstable speeds, and how once they get subscribers can they maintain the speed in the network. its probably in areas where sky was their digital tv thing.
would be nice for PLDT to up their plans again. PLDT does have its top plan in selected areas, what was it again
vance says:
I’m also with bagldsl, I mean bayandsl. and for the price, its enough but still for 100 pesos more you get 1.5Mbps for a DSL sub from PLDT and Globe, more than the SOD speed that we get. of course burst speed is the key.
I thought cable internet was not as good as DSL, but I guess, cable internet can push more speed than 5Mbps connection fiber dsl connection that pldt offers in rich areas, i mean selected areas.
So how far are DSL (in Manila) from reaching top speed of 12MBps? i’m guessing 3-5 years from now? since the 5Mbps haven’t been fully rolled out.
Patrick says:
@Raych: Oh yes, I forgot about that. Did you also email them for the speed bump request? I should be on that same speed too. Well, then I guess there’s no more need to switch. :)
Raych says:
@Patrick, I’m also on BayanDSL. Plan 899 but 768 kbps and up to 1mbps when using speed on demand. :)
Raych says:
The good thing about this is it’s packaged with SkyCable. :) But it’s a bit pricey, will still stick muna to my plan 899. :P
Btw, I think there’s something wrong with your comment links. Whenever I click the ShowAll or the firstpage of the comments it brings me to your main page.
jhay says:
I wish more ISPs would enter Cavite and other provinces. We’re too tired of Globe and PLDT giving us least priority when it comes to service calls and system upgrades.
vance says:
Ah?!? so still DSL is behind cable internet? skybroadband is a cable internet service, like destiny and zpdee.
vance says:
is time to switch? hehe. I’ve beent using bayantel for years now and ok yung speed. thats why I haven’t switch carriers.
Dark Knight & Joker Interrogation Spoof says:
The Philippine Internet Market would be really happy about this. Kelan kaya susunod ang smart??
Patrick says:
@frozenpyro: No, they are different services. BayanDSL was previously called SkyDSL. I guess they changed it to avoid confusion.
Sky Broadband: http://www.skybroadband.com.ph/
BayanDSL: http://www.bayandsl.com/
I’m currently subscribed to Bayandsl and I live in QC. Service has been okay. A few downtimes but nothing intolerable. And I’m a heavy internet user.
That 1.5 mbps plan of Sky worth 999 looks tempting. I’m on plan 899 in Bayan and it’s only 384 kbps.
frozenpyro says:
Is sky broadband the same as bayantel dsl? If so, then I would like to upgrade my dsl (899 monthly / 768 kbps) to 999 monthly (1.5mbps)
well for me, minimum down time, (they say it depends on the location, I’m from valenzuela)
Abe Olandres says:
@Glenn – they have a Plan 3Mbps at Php1,999 (with Sky Cable subscription) and Plan 1.5Mbps at Php999.
@Shutter Box – nope, but I think if your area has Sky Cable, then you’re covered too.
Shutter Box Philippines says:
Hi Abe!
Did they mention what areas will this service be available?
kouji says:
interesting. i wonder if there will be a lot of takers of these plans.
JC John SESE-Cuneta says:
12Mbps! Now the PH Internet Speed war has begun. Can’t wait to see how the people will react especially the iCafe owners. Even ISPs, I wonder if they will up their offering.
@Glenn:
Unless there were recent developments I haven’t heard of, SkyCable and BayanTel are both owned by the Lopez Group of Companies, who also owns ABS-CBN and other popular brands.
Glenn says:
Hey Yuga,
Any news if they offer broadband only or even broadband + voice? Also any linkage to their online ads?
I believe Sky and BayanTel are owned by the same people. BayanTel at least is reliable in our area (QC) with fast service and good connectivity.
