This is not the first time Sony introduced an eBook reader in the market but because of the Amazon Kindle’s relative success in the US, the Japanese company is putting back its weight in.
Three e-book readers were announced earlier today (although one is still labeled coming soon).
The smallest one (the Pocket Edition) has a 5-inch display with 512MB of internal memory and weighs just over 200grams. It can virtually carry 7,500 pages of e-books and has a price of $199PHP 11,678INR 16,865EUR 190CNY 1,448.
The Touch Edition has a display screen of 6 inches, still 512MB of internal memory but can be expanded with a Memory Stick Pro Duo SD card. It also sports a touchscreen, audio player and picture viewer. Weighs about 280 grams and costs $299PHP 17,547INR 25,340EUR 285CNY 2,176.
The 3rd one, to be released later in the year is the Reader Daily Edition — a 7-inch screen with 3G wireless and to cost $399PHP 23,416INR 33,815EUR 380CNY 2,904.
The Kindle and Kindle DX has some pretty good competition now.

August says:
are e-book readers wired before this?
Abe Olandres says:
@August – yup, you need a USB cable to connect and update. This time, you can update them via wireless/3G. As for the Amazon Kindle, it’s via EvDO.
BrianB says:
May optional back lighting?
August says:
oh, great! thanks abe!
(and i thought my question was witty – i hate comebacks, spoil my sarcasm)
Bogcess says:
Natawa ako nung sinabing non-working prototype lang pala yung ginamit sa presscon ng sony. Kaya pala ayaw pahawakan sa media. Haha!
Kathy says:
I want one. Are these available here in the Philippines?
Raven says:
Im c0ntented with my f0ne. And i can als0 install wattpad f0r unlimited eb0ok c0ntents.
Ederic says:
I’m glad that there are new devices that will make people read more. Not too interested, though, as I can read hundreds of ebooks on my Palm Centro’s eReader application.
Miguel says:
I’ll hold off for the China OEM brands.

And I was just about to write in my book blog an article listing the reasons why I’m not buying any of these ebook readers… :P
ZJ Morales says:
Why buy this if you could buy an iPod Touch or PSP at a much lower price diba? May Colored Screen ka pa.. *heh* :)
Francis Acero says:
@ederic The difference between reading on a PDA and reading on one of these readers is like night and day. Interesting to see if local legal textbooks can be adapted to fit eBook readers.
Hmmm. There’s an idea.
Josh says:
Yuga, any idea where can I buy a Sony Reader here in the Philippines?
wENDAL says:
Been trying to track one down forever. About to give in and wait the month+ it’ll take for my parents to send me one from the US
luningning says:
I own the Touch Edition. I was also searching for the Sony Reader, ever since they released the older model(the 505). I think this is not available in the Philippines yet and I think it won’t be available in the near future. Something about Sony selling it to certain regions only. I bought mine in UK, a week after it was first released.
The difference in reading experience between a PDA and this device is astonishing. I own a HP 6828 for a couple of years now and its always frustrating to run out of battery before I even finish reading a book. The Touch is said to have enough juice to let you finish 7000 page turns of reading. (Haven’t tested this yet though)
lailai says:
will i still be able to download books here in the philippines even if i pusrchased it in the US?
luningning says:
@lailai,
yes you will able to do that. I use Calibre to connect my pc to my Reader.
You can download a bunch of free ebooks from Project Guttenburg. Calibre already has a built-in conversion program that lets you convert from almost anything to the typically used EPUB format of the Reader.
This is a nice way to catch up with the classics. I sometimes Pdf my assignments and notes for reviewing when i’m too tired or lazy to carry a bunch of paper in my bag.
Anyway, I really have stellar recommendations on this device. Satisfied 100% Its worth the Php 25,000 i paid for it.
naomi says:
saw these items available locally.
trinoma – game stop.

I have the Sony PRS-650 version. It’s the one labeled here as the “Touch Edition.” I’ve been using the product for more than a month now, and so far, I am very pleased with it. For 10k, it’s not a bad investment. :)
