Which gadget brands depreciate so quickly?

Been helping friends sell a number of their gadgets for years now and have noticed that in recent years, gadget prices have depreciated much faster than before.

Devices like laptops and cellphones are among the most notorious when it comes to depreciation. I think there are several factors that contribute to this effect.

Product Lifecycle. Before, devices like cellphones usually have a lifecycle of around 9 months to 12 months before they are replaced with a newer model. Today, it’s around 6 months or sometimes even shorter.

Purchasing Power. People can afford these device more than ever before. Remember when a prepaid SIM card used to cost around Php950 a piece? Now, they’re just Php40 a pop.

Supply & Demand. People want more so manufacturers make more of these products to sell.

Competition. There are more players competing in the same market so movement of products are faster and pricing is more aggressive.

Some brands aren’t affected by these market forces, like Apple as they vigorously try to control SRPs of their distributors while others like Nokia that moves hundred of millions of devices annually pretty much exemplify our case.

So, which other gadget brands do you think are very prone to depreciation?

i think acer and gateway depreciate relatively fast. hp and compaq depreciate more slowly and have better brand image. for cellphones, i think nokia depreciates fast because i saw the C3 depreciate from 7k+ to 5k+ in a few months

  2. tech84 says:

For certain Models, Apple products are the ones that depreciate the fastest. Its because they come up with a newer, better version every few months rendering their predecessors inferior.

  3. kyflo says:

Computers = Before, big companies only use them. Now, computers are everywhere.

LCD TVs = Before, they cost like Php400K and yet it only supports 720p through analog component video. Now, the cheapest cost like 6k (15′) which supports 720p through HDMI and analog component, you can plug PC through VGA or DVI/HDMI. Expect that LCD TVs will be more cheaper when most TV networks have Digital TV service.

Cellphones = It used to be for the Rich class.
Now, almost everyone in the country own one.

Tablets = They used to cost around 60K+ and yet it only has a resistive touchscreen and it is not common yet. Now, they can be bought for as low as 2K+.

MP3/Mp4 players = iPods use to cost around 30k+.
Now, the top of the line iPod now cost more or less than 20k+

Flash drives = They use to cost thousands of pesos for 128/256/512MB to 2GB.
Now, anyone can buy it from Php 200+ depending on size.

  5. John Daniel says:

    I totally agree. :)

  6. jonski22 says:

    cellphones and laptops….unless its Apple

  7. Sherman says:

Apple depreciates fastest? Hah! Yeah, right.

  8. WTFChuck says:

Whoever mentioned anything Apple barely made it out of Elementary. Dumb fraks. Google depreciation for fraks sake!

  9. alvintisoy_69 says:

    nokia phones and apple products

  10. Cirrus says:

    Apple… and Nvidia also

  11. McTechieGuy says:

Phones equipped with Android, because after l-3 months another (better) android phone from another manufacturer comes out! (Like the LG Optimus, i bought a Nokia 5800 weeks before the Optimus launched! And with the same price!)

  12. Taxman says:

How about a Macbook Air? I like to have one.

  13. aaa-battery says:

another major reason why gadgets depreciate so fast is because of the big advances in technology. technology moves so fast and it is very hard to catch up with it. not only that, too much progress in technology will make existing gadgets turn obsolete in a very short period. so once you buy any gadget, it’s already expected that your gadget will turn obsolete just for months.

    • Pinoy Persuasion says:

      Stating the obvious. ;)

  14. sylver07 says:

    nokia,zune,samsung.

Btw, it (gadgets) can be a good investment if you just know how to use them.

  15. Jhiegzh says:

Nokia depreciates the fastest! The more cellphone manufacturers, the more competitions. The more competitions, the more depreciation of products!

  16. justin viudez says:

Well once any gadget is used it depreciates in value and apple products clearly does not depreciate that fast even if newer models arrive they still stay at a certain price range, even third hand units still go for thousands more than other brands of similar gadgets.

    • jologs says:

I agree. Kaya I’m wondering why there are people who say it’s Apple, when in fact, even if a newer model of the product has already been released, mahal pa rin yung existing. Take the iPhone for instance: iPhone 4 is selling at around 37K for 16 GB, while the similar 3GS model can still sell for 20-23K. Compare that to other smartphones. Or the Macbooks. Diba?

    • Messie says:

Most of them citing apple as an example here actually pertains to the Ipad. Unfortunately, when the ipad 2 was released, Apple decided to take 4k off the price of the ipad 1. Kaya siguro they said it depreciated.

Other than that, I agree with you that Apple products’ prices stay high much longer when compared with devices coming from Nokia or Samsung. Even if newer products are released, the re-sale value of your items won’t go below 50% the original price, unless you are desperate enough to sell it. And if you do, I guarantee you it will sell fast that way.

    • WTFChuck says:

Yeah. It suddenly felt like the Willing Willie crowd suddenly rushed to drop comments here.

    • justin viudez says:

maybe their understanding of depreciation is somehow different, i saw one comment talking about hardware and how apple products die overnight after a new release, i just dont get their point on that. all i can say is that apple products have higher resell value than other brands, and it will probably stay that way until a real game changer comes along.

  17. kim says:

nokia phones saka samsung phones saka yun galaxy biglang baba price nila

  18. tnt says:

yeah masakit talagang bumili ng sim card noon. tapos card pa ung load. ngayon kahit 100 eh di ako makapagload.hehe noon kahit alcatel ung cp mo in ka pa rin. di gaya ngayon!

  19. wha says:

    @ otep
950 sim card is in d year 1999. 4th year hiskul ako dat time. Piltel/talk n text or alcatel na cellphone ang uso nun at yung 5110.

    • Messie says:

Yup, 950 ang sim card, pero may load na kasama (300 or 500 ba un?) and SMS sending during that time is free pa.

  20. je17 says:

Everything! Gadgets are not investments. Buy what you need. Then try to hold on until there is something really new! Yeah!

  21. EARN MONEY ONLINE says:

Hehehe, peace!

  22. voldemort says:

anything by Apple depreciate instantly after the latest version/generation is released. LOL!

  23. pabs says:

I don’t care, if they depreciate so fast. It’s very unwise to keep pacing with what is new. As long as my phone can do its basic function, I’ll hold on to it.

  24. wreek888 says:

NOKIA , usually their smart phone cost 32k then after 6 months down to 18k. I remember bought n95 for 34k and when i sold it after a year is 5k to buy n97 for 33k and sold it for 6k and bought n8 for 22k planning to buy n7 for 32k and asked how much they will buy my n8 and its only 10k, wow! but i am more wiser now i bought cherry mobile magnun on sale at 16k and keep the n8 coz i will add 22k for tha e7 and i know by end of the year price will be 18 k.

  25. mattscradle says:

    • Pinoy Persuasion says:

      Face out? Baka phase out?

    • mattscradle says:

      I mean phase out. Sorry.

  26. simplynice93 says:

Myphone and Cherry mobile depreciates very quickly. LG, Nokia and Samsung depreciates almost at the same time after new phones have been released.

  27. Zyper says:

Galaxy tab. I bought one last december for 34k. Now brand new costs 21k, with the wifi version at 16k :(

  28. arj says:

low end smart phones, mp3 players, digicams, laptops

  29. aira says:

Cellphone:Samsung,LG,NOKIA,SOnyEricson and others ay Mabilis Talaga bumababa Lalo na yong nasa Grey Markets everyday May iba iba silang Presyo pababa ng Pababa… unlike iphone Takes a year bago baba…

  30. rye says:

    nokia phones and laptops.

  31. Pinoytek says:

Top of the list are laptops. Second, mobile phones especially Nokia.

  32. Jologs says:

I agree with you. If it’s a laptop, even if you used it for only 5 mins, hindi na mabebenta yan ng even 5K less than the original price. Ang OA nga e, hehehe.

  33. Jologs says:

I don’t think we are all on the same wavelength when talking about price depreciation. If I understand correctly, eto yung madaling magmura diba? If that is the case, Apple is out of the equation kse ang tagal bumaba ng market value ng products nila. In fact, I can even see 2007 Macbook models that still sell for 25K sa Ghills. Even the older iPhones, di ka makakauha ng less than 15K na matino.

  34. Alwin says:

cellphone madali mag-depreciate, especially Nokia. I don’t think Apple depreciates that easily. Kahit yung 1st Gen iPhones are still sold for 10k at the least unlike other branded smartphones

  35. Solid Hosting says:

I agree! Nokia phones mabilis ma-depreciate.

  36. Solid Hosting says:

I agree! Mabilis mag depreciate ang Nokia phones. Kaya ako I no longer buy expensive Nokia phones. My latest phone is the Samsung dual sim (the cheapest one). Sulit pa!

  37. Red Schubox says:

    It is definitely Apple.

    • iedu says:

Are you fuckin Kidding? How could you tell Apple depreciates faster than those Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericson and many other dumb phones?

  38. kakroch99 says:

  39. honcho says:

It’s definitely Apple, their hardware is barely incremental, the older product dies literally overnight, when the new one comes.

compare that to other non-glorified brands, you only see spec variations, owners of older product would usually say, “nah.. sa susunod na lang na iteration, pwede pa toh. ;)”

  40. jargon says:

i think apple depreciates the fastest

  41. otepsphere says:

Another thing is nag depreciate nde lang sa price..may mga gadget na nag depreciate din sa quality and performance..agree o nde? hmmm

  42. chinitoguy says:

Cellphones especially those MyPhone, Cherry Mobile and Torque. on the contrary high end branded phones like Sony Ericcson don’t easily depreciate.

  43. otepsphere says:

I agree! :D now i know yun pla presyo nun dati :D lol

  44. Christian says:

I think mga cellphones especially pag Nokia.

  45. Jorlan says:

Thinkpad has a slow depreciation rate…
i can still see old thinkpad selling like hotcakes in some sites…

  46. techguy says:

I certainly agree that mobile phones depreciate in value quicker than any other gadgets out there. Back then cellphone is a luxury. Nowadays anyone can have it. It’s not a big deal anymore. It feels cheap to have one nowadays. I used to love mobile phones. But because of that trend I’ll stick with a cheapo para di masakit pag manakaw.. anyway, i don’t use a phone to surf the net.

  47. Jeff says:

    Nokia phones!

  48. Benchmark says:

  49. alvinpi says:

    sony ericsson cellphones.

  50. Bryan says:

Nokia phones! It depreciates faster than you can say WTF!

  51. Gervie M. says:

I think smartphones specifically ung low end ones

  52. promdi says:

cellphones depreciate faster! Parang bagong bili mo pa lang after 6 mos, luma na

  53. aron says:

    i think is nokia phones.
