Huawei MateView Hands-on

We did a hands-on of the Huawei MateView GT a while back. It’s a curved monitor with a 3K resolution and is designed for gaming. But what if you want something flat, has 4K resolution, an IPS panel, and a minimalist design? Huawei’s answer to that is the Huawei MateView. Read our hands-on below.

One of the first things you’ll notice about the Huawei MateView is how premium it is. It uses an aluminium alloy for the frame and stand. So if you’re already tired of the usual black plastic on monitors, the MateView would be a visual treat.

It’s got a clean finish with a minimalist design and looks like it’s made of two parts — the stand and the monitor. Compared to the MateView GT, the MateView takes less desk space. That can be attributed to the smaller screen and stand. We can now place more things underneath the monitor, which is great.

The stand is not just a typical stand as it houses an NFC for easy wireless projection from Huawei smartphones running EMUI 10 and above.

It also has two 5W speakers, and dual microphones with 4m far-field voice pick up on the front hidden in the grille. The audio quality is decent and good enough for casual listening and online conferences.

Found on the right side of the stand are two USB-A ports for peripherals, multi-purpose USB-C with 65W reverse charging, 3.5mm audio jack, and sleep/wake button. We would have liked it better if Huawei placed all the ports at the back for better cable management and a cleaner look.

At the back is a USB-C power port for the 135W power adapter, Mini DP, and HDMI. Huawei already included USB-C and Mini DP cables in the package.

The monitor is connected to the stand with a stainless steel hinge. It also allows you to tilt the monitor from -5-deg to 18-deg angle (no swivel, though) and adjust the elevation up to 110mm. The sliding mechanism is smooth enough to allow you to easily adjust the elevation yet firm enough to keep it in place.

When it comes to accessing the menu, there’s a Smart Bar placed under the monitor. It’s touch-sensitive, so all you need to do is swipe left or right to adjust the volume. Tap on it once to bring up the menu and swipe to navigate. To confirm changes, tap once, then tap twice to exit.

For the monitor, we have a 28.2-inch screen size with 3840 x 2560 resolution, a 3:2 aspect ratio, and a 60Hz refresh rate. It uses an IPS panel, covers 100% sRGB and 98% DCI-P3, supports 1.07 billion colors, is VESA DisplayHDR 400-certified, and has a maximum brightness of 500 nits. It also boasts a 94% screen-to-body ratio and TÃœV Rheinland Low Blue Light and Flicker-Free certification.

It’s an excellent and immersive screen with high resolution and accurate colors. Those who are into photo and video editing will enjoy the quality. The 3:2 aspect ratio also makes it great for browsing websites, and you’ll have more space for your tools in creative software. Watching videos on it is fine, but given the aspect ratio, you will often encounter black borders at the top and bottom.

What makes the MateView stand out is its wireless features. WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with support for 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands and Bluetooth 5.1. When connected to a device using the Huawei AI app, it can connect to your home WiFi to get updates.

The MateView works great with wireless projection with supported Huawei devices and Windows laptops, including MateBooks. We tested it using the Huawei P40 Pro, and all we need to do is tap the phone’s NFC to the base of the MateView then change the input source to wireless. Once connected, we just tapped on desktop mode, and we now have an EMUI-powered desktop.

Overall, we’re liking the MateView. It’s great for those who want to prioritize resolution and color accuracy for their creative needs. Not to mention a cleaner and more professional look. You can put two of these side by side for a dual-monitor setup, and it will still look great. The wireless feature isn’t something you’ll take advantage of daily, but it’s a nice extra nonetheless. It’s more expensive than the MateView GT, though, at PHP 34,999USD 596INR 50,560EUR 568CNY 4,343, but if budget is not an issue, you’ll definitely like it.

The Huawei MateView is up for pre-order from August 13 to 20 on the official Huawei Online Store, flagship stores on Lazada and Shopee, and HUAWEI Experience Stores nationwide. Those who will pre-order will get a free classic Huawei Backpack worth PHP 5,990USD 102INR 8,653EUR 97CNY 743.
