Yahoo launches Pipes, then gets crushed by Digg

Yahoo! Pipes has been officially launched a few hours ago and Diggers have brought it down. Now, you know how huge Digg traffic if it can clog a Yahoo service. The site now returns “Our Pipes are clogged! We’ve called the plumbers!

But what are Pipes, btw? Pipes are a hosted service that lets you remix feeds and create new data mashups in a visual programming environment. The name of the service pays tribute to Unix pipes, which lets programmers do astonishingly clever things by making it easy to chain simple utilities together on the command line.

Can’t wait to try this out but since the service is still down (no thanks to Digg), we’ll just have to wait a little while longer.

I wonder if it’s correct to say that it’s the power of Digg or the dumbness of Yahoo. Yahoo, from the Philippines at least, has been abysmal over the past few months. I’ve given up the majority of the Groups I used to be active in and Yahoo messenger some days takes an hour to finally connect.

It’s also pretty interesting how they can make such a production out of “pipes” … we Windows people have had pipes since Bill Gates made a crippled version of Unix and called it MS-DOS.

Everyone reading this (except perhaps those on an Apple) are already running Pipes and have no need of Yahoo … open a command window (Programs, Accessories, type ipconfig /all
Did the information just blast off your screen? Then up arrow to retype the command and ad space, pipe (this guy) “|” space “more” and presto you get one screen and another screen every time you press the space bar … you can pipe yo other directories, out to a printer, apply filters, etc. It’s all in our computers now but how many ever have a use for it? Yahoo! is kinda over the line into geekdom here, I mean you can make your computer run all day in the command line mode and maybe even find an old WordStar disk to write your papers with … but I don’t think many want to go back.

Gotta love the Digg users… With power must come responsibility… not their fault though, Yahoo should’ve expected the traffic..

  3. Jaypee says:

    The site is back online.

Im still trying to figure out how it works exactly. Also, you need some programming skills to be able to use this coz it uses operators.

For the Digg effect, I’m not really sure but I think the plugin WP-Cache can help. :)

  4. Alex says:

Yup. +1 on that. Brace yourself if you get Dugg with only a cheap-O web hosting package. See? Even Yahoo! went down!

    Thanks for the newsbit, yuga!

  5. marhgil says:

    Lufet talaga ng Digg!

  6. jhay says:

That’s why I seldom dream of being Dugg, my site would be down for who knows when.
